My dog
My dog is the cleverest animal of all.
He doesn’t just run after a ball.
He can do wonderful tricks,
And loves to collect sticks.
He never bites,
And doesn’t like fights.
He can sit and he can stay,
He loves to eat and he loves to play.
My dog is my very best friend,
And I’ll look after his till the end.
1. What is the dog like?
He is clever.
2. Why does the writer think the dog is clever?
Because the dog doesn’t just run after a ball. He can also do wonderful tricks, collect sticks and so on.
Read the poem “My cat” together and fill in the table below.
My cat
My cat has soft fur,
And loves to purr.
She can jump really high,
Way up into the sky.
She has a pair of blur eyes,
And likes to run after butterflies.
Sometimes she climbs a tall tree,
But she never forgets to come back to me.
When I’m lonely, she’s always there.
She can’t talk, but does care.
When I need a friend or feel sad,
She is always by my side.

How do you feel after reading the two poems?
When reading a poem, we need to pay attention to the tone, rhyme, rhythm and structure as they play a role in shaping the overall meaning,
Tone (声调)shows the author’s attitude or feelings towards the subjects of a poem.
Tone is sometimes referred to as the “mood” of the poem.

1. Why do the writers use “he” or “she”, but not “it”?
People sometimes call animals “he” or “she” when they think the animals have feelings and personality. This is common with pets like cats and dogs.
2. Why does the writer use “ the cleverest animal of all” but not “a clever animal”?
Because the writer wants to use an exaggeration (夸张) on the line to make readers know the dog is very special.
3. Which line contains an exaggeration in “My cat”?
Way up into the sky. (Line 16)
4. What other writing skills does the writers use to make the poems more interesting? Please give some examples.
The writers also use contrast(对比).
Examples: He doesn’t just run after a ball. He can do wonderful tricks,…
She doesn’t speak, but does care.
