There is a wide and beautiful beach near our town. Every weekend, some warm-hearted volunteers go there to do a meaningful activity. Most of them are middle school students and local teachers.
When they get to the beach, they take out thick gloves and big plastic bags to pick up the rubbish. Then they are divided into small groups. Members in group 1 pick up plastic bottles on the sand. Members in group 2 carefully step into the shallow (浅的) sea to collect the rubbish floating (漂浮) on the water surface. Members in group 3 walk around to remind the visitors not to throw litter everywhere.
Why do they spend their free time doing this tiring work? That’s because the volunteers hope their small actions can protect the ocean and make more people join them. In fact, too much rubbish makes the beautiful beach look dirty and ugly. And the waste is very bad for sea animals. For example, sea birds may eat plastic by mistake and get ill, and small fish may die because of dirty water.
Thanks to their hard work for over one year, the local beach has become clean and tidy again. The sea water looks much clearer than before. More and more visitors take their rubbish away after playing. Now, the beach is one of the most popular places in our town for people to relax and play on sunny days.
