Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an after-school program to help students from poor families.
On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up (排队) for free sandwiches and fruits. She was surprised. One of the organizers says that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced-price (降价的) meals, and those students’ families have to pay for the part of their food.

On a moonlit night in Hainan, a group of villagers came together silently by the beach. Their flashlights were covered with red cloth, sending soft light onto the sand. They were waiting for a magic moment they’d seen every summer for generations—the hatching (孵化) of sea turtles.
Suddenly, tiny dark shapes began moving toward the waves. “The hatchlings (幼龟) are coming!” said 12-year-old Lin Lin softly, holding her breath. But then disaster came—bright lights from a nearby hotel confused the babies, making them move away from the sea.
Without thinking twice, the villagers formed a human wall between the hotel and the beach. They lay on their stomachs, using their bodies to block the strong light. Lin Lin gently picked up a lost baby turtle and whispered, “Don’t worry, little friend.” Slowly, the hatchlings found their way back to the ocean.
This “Turtle Guardian” tradition dates back 200 years. Villagers believe humans must protect these ancient creatures. During egg-laying season, they patrol beaches every night. If they find turtle eggs, they mark the area with sticks and watch over them until the babies come out. Mr. Chen, 58, remembers hard times: “In the 1990s, we had to stop egg thieves. Now tourists join our patrols.” The community has put up signs explaining turtle protection. Children make model turtles from seashells to sell, and the money helps clean the beaches.
Mr. Chen smiled as the last hatchling disappeared into the waves. “They’ll return here in 30 years,” he said confidently. Lin Lin looked at Mr. Chen and said...

Dear Chairperson,
I would like to join the wetland environmental protection group.
I am Li Hua, a student from Class 1, Grade 8. I love nature and am interested in animals and plants. In winter, I enjoy seeing the land covered with snow, building snowmen, and having snowball fights.
I often visit wetlands and know they provide homes for wildlife. That is why I want to learn more about protecting them. Animals and plants face serious problems now. First, we should stop polluting their habitats. Second, planting more trees can help.
I believe protecting them means protecting ourselves.
I will be very happy if I can be a member of the wetland environmental protection group. You can email me at lihua@sunshine.com.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
