The percentages in the table are probably higher that hey would be for all Spelling Bee players. B In August 2024, I stood at the start of the Twisted Branch 100K in New York's Finger Lakes --- an ultramarathon of raw, 62-mile running I started out racing the way I usually do: tracking my pace on my watch and methodically monitoring my heart rate. About 30 miles in, I realized that I had now been running for more time than I had ever run before, and I still had 32 miles to go. My legs hurt; my stomach hurt; I felt faint. I had missed dinner the night before. I had slept less than four hours. I had plenty of good reasons to drop out. Instead, I paused for a second and turned off my heart-rate monitor. Then I flipped (翻) my watch to a screen where I couldn't see my pace. I stopped worrying about everything I normally worry about and instead tried to imagine that I was a young boy, bounding through the forests of New England, where I grew up. I let go of my concerns about time and heart rate. Every hour or so, I would head into an aid station and eat whatever I felt like eating. I just kept moving forward and, remarkably, I seemed to pick up speed. I started passing other runners. Now I had run 42, 46, 50 miles. At mile 52, I felt a touch of sadness that I only had 10 more miles to go. It was exquisite to run these woodland paths without the pressure of wanting to finish in a certain time or to hold on to a specific place. The race finished on a sharp drop down a mountain. I sprinted (冲刺)across the last 100 meters of grass. I didn't even know my time or how many people had finished ahead of me. But I knew I had learned an entirely new way to enjoy myself on and off the road 24. What happened to the author about 30 miles into the race? A. He needed medical care. B. He was nearly breaking down. C. He broke own record. D. He was forced to quit halfway 25.How did the author adjust himself? A. By taking quick breaks. B. By timing his speed. C. By reducing food intake. D. By shifting his focus 26. What does the underlined word "exquisite" in paragraph 4 mean? A. Heartbreaking B. Discouraging C.Enjoyable. D.Available. 27. What message does the author seem to convey through the text? A. Process matters much more than data. B. Sports is essential for keeping fit. C. Pain is more motivating than comfort. D. Success needs long-term strategies. C A team from California's Stanford University developed a new method to quantify varying “doses(剂量)” of greenery and wooden materials---and used this, in a virtual office, to examine the effect of indoor nature on people's we1-being. While previous research had suggested that indoor nature like plants reduces stress --- a conclusion not necessarily wrong --- such studies either tested participants' responses to nature compared to without it, or were based on subjective levels of greenery. The team enlisted 412 participants, each of whom was assigned a virtual room and told to imagine that it was their new workplace, within which they were going to tackle professional development tasks. The team then set about stressing out the participants, as to determine if the natural features in the rooms helped to ease this stress or not. The participants completed tasks that included difficult word puzzles and counting down from 1,022 to zero in steps of 13. The analysis revealed that a greenery dose of about 20 percent had the strongest result in terms of restoring calm and a sense of belonging for participants. "In our 13-square-meter room, this dose amounted to 17 plants as well as a window overlooking tree canopies (树冠)," study author Eva Bianchi told Newsweek. "Any nature helps, but if you really want to see an improvement, you have to get up to around that value," said paper author Sarah Billington. In contrast, in the virtual rooms with the most nature --- at 60 percent full of plants, living walls and wooden ceilings --- the participants experienced increased stress. The authors acknowledge that how much nature we need will ultimately depend on the type of space under consideration and the well-being elements needed in that particular environment."However, with the results of the present study, it appears that a dose of 20 percent of greenery may maximize belonging fascination, being away and scope," they wrote in the paper. "We hope our findings can inform design recommendations for housing, schools, workplaces and hospitals." 28. What is implied about the previous research? A. It used an improper sample. B. It set inconsistent study goals. C. It provided one-sided results D. It adopted a more scientific method. 29. Which of the following can describe the tasks assigned to the participants? A. Eye-opening. B. Mentally demanding C. Time-saving D. Physically challenging 30. Why are Binchi's words cited in paragraph 4? A. To offer a concrete example for greenery. B. To show stress related to surroundings C. To contrast his opinion with Billiagton's D. To introduce his comparative analysis. 31. What do the statements in the last paragraph point to regarding the present research? A. Its diverse interpretations. B. Its possible limitations C. Its detailed considerations. D. Its potential applications. D Ever since the US-based National Biscuit Company launched the first branded consumer package in1899 --- putting its Uneeda soda crackers (苏打饼干) in paper inside a cardboard box --- brands have seen packaging as a marketing tool. From the 1950s onwards, as companies increasingly switched to using plastic, competition intensified and packaging became the best way to signal a distinct identity. But as brands added a growing variety of pigments (色素), materials, and other complexities, the already unstable economics of plastics recycling collapsed. Just 10 percent of plastic packaging is recycled globally. Meanwhile, reusable packaging remains limited. Standardization could dramatically improve things. If product categories followed uniform guidelines for plastic type, color, labels and glues, recyclers could cheaply recover far more materials. This could finally make recycling economically practical and help achieve the dream of "circularity", in which a new for bottle is made from an old one. The case for standardized reuse systems is equally persuasive. Today, the few brands experimenting with reuse mostly use different containers. These need individual return points alongside custom washing equipment and quality checks, which increase expense and complexity while reducing convenience. Reuse systems based on standardized packaging and shared infrastructure (基础设施) could capture 40 percent of the market, compared with 2 percent under a non-standardized approach, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Admittedly, it is hard to imagine rivals like Procter & Gamble and Unilever voluntarily agreeing to put their shampoo in the same-colored bottles. But as data mounts about the billions of dollars lost each year from single-use plastics that are burned or landfilled --- and research reveals more about the health risks linked to thousands of poorly studied chemicals in plastics --- brands may find their corner is harder to defend. Legally, it could be argued that the damage caused by custom packaging outweighs any harms caused to brands from standardized containers Similar plastic bottles won't solve everything, of course. But such changes increasingly look like good business sense. Without them, truly circular packaging remains a distant dream. 32. How does the author present the issue at the beginning of the text? A. By analyzing figures. B. By defining a concept. C. By telling the history. D. By making comparisons. 33. What benefit could reuse systems in from standardized packaging? A. Expanding the market share. B. Increasing the complexity. C. Boosting the consumer appeal. D. Winning economic support. 34. What can be inferred about the brands mentioned in paragraph 5? A.They spend so much in recycling. B. They face multiple pressures. C. They work in close collaboration. D. They follow the fashion closely. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. Solutions to Plastic Waste B.Costs of Plastic Production C. Careful Design, Regular Customer D. Shared Design, Cyclic Future 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 An Unsung Hero Sometimes, just a few words offered at the right moment can change the direction of someone’s life. For Ruth Carter, that moment happened after a painful experience in high school. As a second-year student, Carter joined a choir (合唱) class. 36 . Carter landed a solo (独唱) in it.She wasn't nervous until the week before, when she discovered that the entire school would be in attendance The curtain opened and the choir began to sing. Carter looked out at the faces in the crowd. Then she noticed a single microphone standing at the front of the stage, ready for her solo.37 . Their choir teacher had never taught them how to sing into a microphone. And yet it was her turn to sing. Despite her uncertainty, her solo began smoothly. She sang confidently in front of everyone.38 With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the sound came exploding out of the speakers, deafeningly loud. "I wanted the stage to open up and swallow me whole." Dragging her feet down the hallway with her eyes cast down, she spotted a pair of large athletic shoes. Looking up, she saw a senior student she had never met, expecting his hurtful words. 39 "He said,‘You have a very powerful voice," she said. Inspired by the student's confidence in her, Carter went on to study music at the University of Kansas.40 Over the past few years, as she's begun teaching voice students, she has found herself thinking more about her unsung hero. A. Carter decided to give up singing. B. It was a problem she hadn't anticipated. C. Then she reached the big final high note D. They became best friends in the university E. The first concert of the year featured songs from the musical Oliver. F. She's now a professional singer-songwriter, performing in, three bands. G. My family had just moved to a new state, and everything felt unfamiliar. The school was huge, the hallways were loud with voices and footsteps, and I worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with my lasses. I felt smal. Academically, things went better than I had expected. My teachers were patient, and I did especially well in English, a subject I had always loved. Writing had always been my way to express myself by telling stories of others, and I often felt more confident on paper than in person. Still, none of that seemed matter when it came to making friends. At lunch, students sat in tight groups, laughing and sharing secrets. I sat by myself, feeling invisible.During group work, I spoke little of my ideas, afraid of embarrasing myself. Hoping to make a change, I had intended to invite several classmates to my house for a holiday activity. But when the holiday approached, I hesitated. What if I was rejected? From them on, I stopped trying to reach out and spent most weekends alone in my room, wondering if moving here had been a mistake. One afternoon in English class, my teacher handed back our essays. When she reached my desk, she nodded and smiled. After class, she asked me to stay behind. Nervous, I wondered if I had done something wrong. Instead, she told me how moved she had been by my writing and said I had a real talent for storytelling. Then she mentioned that the school was planning to hold a writing competition and asked if I would be interested in entering. Her words caught me completely off guard. I had never thought of my writing as something special let alone something others might notice. As I walked home that day, I kept thinking about her encouragement, and for the first time since moving, I felt a sense of hope. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Holding my pen, I started to tell my own story in the new school. After announcing that I was the winner, my teacher read my writing before class. ( 1 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
