B The Popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicine Around the World Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of over 2,000 years. It is an important part of Chinese culture. In recent years, TCM has become more and more popular around the world. People from different countries are showing great interest in TCM, such as acupuncture (针灸), cupping (拔火罐) and herbal medicine (草药). One of the reasons for TCM’s popularity is its effectiveness in treating some diseases. For example, acupuncture is often used to treat pain, insomnia (失眠) and stress. Many people who have tried acupuncture say it works well. Cupping, another traditional therapy (疗法), is used to improve blood circulation (血液循环) and relieve muscle pain. During the 2016 Rio Olympics, the American swimmer Michael Phelps was seen with purple cupping marks on his body, which made cupping famous all over the world. Another reason is that TCM pays attention to the balance of the human body. TCM believes that the human body is a whole, and illness is caused by the imbalance of yin and yang (阴阳). TCM doctors treat patients by adjusting this balance. They may use herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage or other therapies. Unlike Western medicine, which often focuses on treating specific symptoms (症状), TCM focuses on the overall health of the patient. In addition, TCM is becoming more accepted because of the increasing exchange between China and other countries. Many TCM colleges and hospitals have been set up around the world. For example, in Australia, there are many TCM clinics (诊所) that provide acupuncture and herbal medicine services. In the United States, some universities offer courses on TCM. More and more people are learning about TCM and recognizing its value. However, TCM still faces some challenges. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of international standards (标准) for TCM products and therapies. This makes it difficult for TCM to be widely accepted in some countries. Another challenge is the shortage of qualified TCM doctors. To solve these problems, China has been working hard to promote the standardization (标准化) of TCM and train more TCM professionals. Despite the challenges, TCM has a bright future. As people pay more attention to natural and healthy ways of treating diseases, TCM will continue to spread around the world and make greater contributions to human health. 6. How long is the history of TCM? A. Over 1000 years. B. Over 2,000 years. C. Over 3,000 years. D. Over 4,000 years. 7. Which of the following is NOT a TCM therapy mentioned in the passage? A. Acupuncture. B. Cupping. C. Herbal medicine. D. Surgery. 8. Why did cupping become famous all over the world? A. Because it is very effective in treating many diseases. B. Because it is a traditional therapy with a long history. C. Because Michael Phelps was seen with cupping marks during the 2016 Rio Olympics. D. Because it is widely used in Western countries. 9. What is the difference between TCM and Western medicine? A. TCM focuses on treating specific symptoms. B. Western medicine focuses on the overall health of the patient. C. TCM pays attention to the balance of the human body. D. Western medicine uses herbal medicine to treat patients. 10. What is one of the challenges TCM faces? A. The high cost of TCM products. B. The lack of international standards for TCM products and therapies. C. The difficulty in learning TCM. D. The lack of TCM clinics around the world. C Have you heard of (听说) dazi? Have you ever found a dazi? These days, finding a dazi is becoming popular with Chinese young people. A dazi is a person we eat with, study with, exercise with or take a trip with, but we haven’t known him or her before. The dazi culture is about finding the right person to do the right activity with. Xiaoyue, a young woman from Ningxia, has met many dazi because of her love for basketball and biking. Having a dazi not only gives her company (陪伴) but also helps her enjoy sports more. These dazi relationships are very different from close friendships. As for close friends, we need to stay in close contact. With a dazi, you don’t have to do so. Many dazi may not meet again after a trip or a game together. So, many people believe having a dazi makes their social life easier and more comfortable. Finding a dazi shows that Chinese young people want clearer boundaries (界限) in their social relationships. Dazi will not talk or ask a lot about their personal lives. And they hope these relationships can let them share their hobbies and interests, or that they can help them to improve themselves. Although finding a dazi has many good points, we should be careful and put our safety first. 11. How does the writer start the passage? A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions. C. By giving numbers. D. By giving an example. 12. How might Xiaoyue describe having a dazi? A. Serious. B. Difficult. C. Enjoyable. D. Meaningless. 13. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A. Having a social life. B. Playing games together. C. Staying in close contact. D. Talking about personal life. 14. Why do Chinese young people like to find a dazi? ①To improve themselves. ②To share their hobbies and interests. ③To save time and money. ④To have boundaries in their social relationships. A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 15. What’s the best title for the passage? A. Some stories of dazi B. How we find a dazi C. Dazi: special close friends D. Dazi: a new popular culture D Have you ever thought about how inventions change the world? Many great inventions have made our lives easier and more comfortable. Let’s look at two important inventions: the telephone and the Internet. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. Before the telephone, people had to send letters to communicate with others far away. Letters could take days or even weeks to arrive. The telephone allowed people to talk to each other at once. This changed how businesses worked and how families stayed in touch. Today, telephones have become even more advanced (先进的). We use smartphones to make calls, send messages, take photos, and more. The Internet is another great invention that has changed the world. It was first developed in the 1960s for the U.S. military (军队). In the 1990s, it became available (可用的) to the public. The Internet allows people to get information from all over the world in seconds. We can learn new things, shop online, and communicate with people in different countries through email or video calls. It has also changed how we work and study. Many people now work from home using the Internet, and students can take online classes. Both the telephone and the Internet have had a huge effect on our lives. They show how inventions can connect people and make the world a smaller place. 16. Who invented the telephone? A. Thomas Edison. B. Alexander Graham Bell. C. The U.S. military. D. An unknown inventor. 17. How did people communicate with others far away before the telephone? A. By email. B. By video calls. C. By smartphones. D. By letters. 18.
