Austria is not just about impressive scenery, rich culture and excellent food. What makes Austria truly unique are its people.
Austrians live by the concept of Lebensgefühl: the willing and total involvement in life itself. Lebensgefühl can be felt in every moment, large or small. It’s the appealing laughter of a landlady during a chat in the morning or the jokes with a local guide. It’s the locals on the next table discussing the meaning of life until well after midnight. It’s the art of not taking life too seriously, something that the Austrians have mastered to perfection.
Lebensgefühl means everyone is welcome in Austria, and welcome to come just as they are. So get ready to be pleased by Austria and the Austrians this autumn and winter and experience Lebensgefühl firsthand!

Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, in London, England. When she was a little girl, she loved animals very much. Once, she even hid in a hen house for hours just to watch how a hen laid an egg. Her parents were happy to see her love for nature and gave her a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee. This toy made Jane dream of working with animals one day.
When Jane grew up, she went to Africa to study chimpanzees. At first, the chimpanzees were frightened of her. They ran away when they saw her. But Jane didn’t give up. She sat quietly in the forest every day, watching them from far away. Slowly, the chimpanzees got used to her. She even gave them names like David and Goliath.
Jane found many amazing things about chimpanzees. She saw that they used sticks to get insects to eat. Before that, people thought only humans could use tools. She also saw that chimpanzees loved their families. Mothers took good care of their babies, and chimpanzees played together like children.
Later, Jane wanted to tell the world about chimpanzees. She wrote books and gave talks. She wanted people to know that chimpanzees are smart and need our help. Now, many forests where chimpanzees live are being cut down. Therefore, Jane started groups to protect these forests and the chimpanzees.
Jane passed away last month. When she was over 90 years old, she still worked hard for animals. She traveled around the world, telling kids to love nature. She once said, “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play.” Jane Goodall’s love for animals teaches us to care for our planet and all the living things on it.

Did you know that long ago, Singapore was full of wetlands, lakes, and small villages? Even today, animals like wild pigs, monkeys, and snakes sometimes enter cities looking for food and shelter. This can be dangerous for them, especially on busy roads.
Singapore wants to become a “City in Nature” by 2030. The city is finding ways to protect natural spaces. Scientists are creating solutions to help wildlife live safely alongside people. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is key to these ideas.
Animals often cross highways and risk being hit by cars. Experts use technology like cameras and sound devices to study animal movement and decide where to build safe crossings. In 2019, the Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) built a 140-meter-long bridge over a highway just for animals. Cameras showed that over 100 species used it. MWG also built fences to guide animals and rope bridges to help those living in trees move safely.
Singapore is also teaching communities how to keep animals safe. The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) receives over 1,000 calls each month to rescue wild animals in cities. “Often, we teach people how to handle the situation themselves,” said Karina Lim from ACRES. “This helps them feel more confident and respect animals more.” Wildlife expert Kiran Sujanani added, “Wild animals are usually shy and scared. If we give them space, they will often leave on their own.”
To live together peacefully, people need to understand why animals come near them and how they behave. Animal welfare groups advise people to do their part to avoid attracting wildlife to their homes. This includes not carrying visible plastic bags in areas with monkeys and storing waste properly. Education is the first step toward change. As one expert said, “Harmony begins with respect.” By learning about animals and respecting their homes, everyone can help protect them. Singapore’s journey shows that with community effort and STEM, people and wildlife can share spaces peacefully.
28.How is STEM primarily used to protect wildlife in Singapore?
A.By building more roads and bridges.
B.By planning more natural parks for animals.
C.By using cameras and devices to frighten animals.
D.By researching animals and creating secure passages.
29.What can be inferred about ACRES’s work from the text?
A.It wants to move all wild animals out of the city.
B.It encourages people to keep wild animals as pets.
C.It mainly focuses on finding new homes for wild animals.
D.It believes people should learn to deal with wildlife properly.
30.What is one suggested way to avoid attracting wildlife to residential areas?
A.Making loud noises to scare animals away.
B.Feeding animals regularly to keep them calm.
C.Storing waste properly and keeping plastic bags out of sight.
D.Building higher fences and setting barriers around homes.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To discuss the dangers wild animals face in cities.
B.To explain how STEM helps humans and wildlife coexist.
C.To encourage readers to visit the natural parks in Singapore.
D.To introduce the history of wildlife conservation in Singapore.
D
“Practice makes perfect” is very popular. However, can you really understand it?
It is believed that if a person practises for at least 10,000 hours, they will reach “perfection” — or become an expert in their field. It was made famous by Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 best-selling book, Outliers: The Story of Success. He gave the examples of the music group The Beatles and Microsoft co-creator Bill Gates, who clearly put in over 10,000 hours of practice before they became successful.
However, although Gladwell’s work was largely based on research done by Anders Ericsson, Ericsson said 10,000 hours was just an average figure. Some people needed fewer than 10,000 hours and others many more. More importantly, Ericsson said that just practising a lot was not enough; the type and quality of practice were also important. He went on to explain the importance of “deliberate practice”, which is when a person practises a part of a skill in depth rather than practising a skill as a whole. Deliberate practice is much more effective, though more tiring.
Many other studies prove practice alone is far from enough. In fact, a more recent study from Princeton University stated that practice only accounted for (占) about 26% of reaching an expert level. Many other factors are needed to become experts. Natural talent is an important factor, which is obvious in sports. For example, many baseball players have amazing eyesight that allows them to see the ball much sooner than others do. Besides, IQ, personality and attitude are necessary. It is also important to note that becoming an expert is not a quick success. Success also depends on social factors, environmental factors, and even just being in the right place at the right time!
All in all, practice may not make perfect, but deliberate practice has been shown to lead to improvement.
32.Why does the author ask a question in the first paragraph?
A.To let people think over it. B.To stress his opinion.
C.To make a comparison. D.To give the meaning.
33.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Different people may need different practice hours.
B.Practising a skill as a whole is much better for improvement.
C.Ericsson doesn’t support deliberate practice.
D.Gladwell’s work has nothing to do with Ericsson’s research.
34.What makes many baseball players perform so well?
A.Their personality. B.Their talent. C.Their attitude. D.Their practice.
35.Which sentence will the author probably agree with?
A.Attitude is everything. B.Patience determines success.
C.Talent is the most important. D.Practice makes a difference.

People hate packaging. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there. 36 When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste. Here are a few examples.
Packaging keeps the meat fresh.
We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy — the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year — often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution? 37 Case-ready packaging can lengthen that shelf life to up to 21 days. If the meat you bought isn’t going to be eaten within a few days, case-ready packaging is the better choice for the environment.
38
This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months. 39 Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself.
Packaging Fixes Sticky Situations.
40 One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be turned inside out and scraped (刮掉) clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers.
A.Packaging protects milk.
B.Using Tetra Pak packaging.
C.But packaging isn’t always the enemy.
D.We should pay attention to the rubbish produced by packaging.
E.Scientists have developed packaging that can keep refrigerated meat fresh for weeks.
F.It can reduce the need for refrigeration and the amount of milk that goes wasted.
G.Food left behind in jars and bottles makes up a surprising amount of waste.

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White’s hometown, there was a yearly performance in the school hall. It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you just don’t fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable, It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Buttler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Buttler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Although kind of nervous, Emily did as Mr. Buttler told her to do. Mr. Buttler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Buttler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

【原文】M: So, Lucy, how was it? Did you enjoy your first Beijing opera?
W: Yes, I certainly did. It was an excellent show, so colorful and exciting.
M: Great, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I was worried because Beijing opera is so different from theater shows in the us.
W: It was very different, but in a good way. I loved the dancing and their actions.
M: Me too. The performers were so talented
W: but there were quite a few things I didn’t understand.
M: Okay, maybe I can help.
W: Well, you know, the part where the main character walks across the stage with the flag on each side of her. I had no idea what she was doing.
M: Oh, that means she’s riding in a carriage. Simple movements in Beijing opera often represent more complex actions like riding a horse or rowing a boat.
W: You see, it seems like so many aspects of Beijing opera come from ancient traditions. I wish I knew more about them.
M: Don’t worry if you’re interested. We can go and watch more Beijing opera together. Maybe one day you’ll be an expert.

Mother’s love is the most beautiful emotion of human beings, but do you know the origin of mother’s day? In 1914 President Wilson made it known to the public that the birthday of Mrs Anna Jarviswould become the national mother’s day of the United States. From then on, mother’s day began to be celebrated on the second sunday of may. This day honored Mrs Jarvis’s hard work to help families meet again after the civil war. It also recognized her efforts to unite the north and the south. The day was meant to pay respect to all American mothers. Both those from the past and those in the future. Most importantly, it celebrated Mrs Anna Reeves Jarvis as America’s national mother. President Wilson asked that the American people fly the United States flag from public buildings and homes on that day, as he said, as a public expression of our love for the mothers of our country. Well, what is the value of mother’s day now? Actually, it reminds people of mothers’ influence on making children better citizens. Jarvis was one such mother. On mother’s day, we celebrate how mother’s teach their children what is right, Wang good and bad.

【答案】32.A 33.A 34.B 35.D
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章探讨了“熟能生巧”的深层含义,指出成为专家不仅需要大量练习,还需刻意练习、天赋、环境等多因素共同作用。

33.推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, although Gladwell’s work was largely based on research done by Anders Ericsson, Ericsson said 10,000 hours was just an average figure. Some people needed fewer than 10,000 hours and others many more. (然而,尽管Gladwell的研究主要基于Anders Ericsson的研究,但Ericsson表示,1万小时只是平均数字。有些人需要的时间少于1万个小时,有些人则需要更多。)”可推知,不同人可能需要不同的练习时间。故选A项。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Natural talent is an important factor, which is obvious in sports. For example, many baseball players have amazing eyesight that allows them to see the ball much sooner than others do. (天赋是一个重要因素,这在体育运动中表现得尤为明显。例如,许多棒球运动员有惊人的视力,使他们能比其他人更快地看到球。)”可知,许多棒球运动员表现出色得益于他们的天赋。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“All in all, practice may not make perfect, but deliberate practice has been shown to lead to improvement. (总而言之,练习不一定能造就完美,但刻意练习已被证明能带来进步。)”可知,作者指出刻意练习的有效性。由此推知,他会赞同“练习能产生影响”的观点。故选D项。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】36.C 37.E 38.A 39.F 40.G
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了正确的包装可以有效减少浪费。
36.空格前的句子“People hate packaging. And, yes, there’s a lot of bad and wasteful packaging out there.(人们讨厌包装。是的,有很多糟糕和浪费的包装。)”说因为浪费,人们讨厌包装。而空格后的句子“When it comes to protecting and dispensing (分发) food, the right package can greatly reduce waste.(在保护和分配食物时,正确的包装可以大大减少浪费。)”
37.根据空格前的句子“We throw away a fifth of the beef we buy—the equivalent (等量) of 8 million cows each year—often because it goes bad before we cook it. The solution?(我们扔掉了我们购买的五分之一的牛肉——相当于每年800万头牛——通常是因为它们在我们烹饪之前就变质了。解决方案?)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到防止牛肉变质的解决方案。所以E项“Scientists have developed packaging that can keep refrigerated meat fresh for weeks.(科学家们已经开发出一种可以使冷藏肉类保持数周新鲜的包装。)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选E项。
38.空格处是该部分的主题句。根据下文的内容“This dairy waste can be avoided with packaging technology such as Tetra Pak (利乐包装纸盒), which is commonly used in Europe and Asia to keep milk from spoiling, even without refrigeration. Recycled or not, Tetra Pak is a good environmental bet because it can lengthen the shelf life of milk up to nine months.(使用利乐包等包装技术可以避免这种乳制品浪费。利乐包在欧洲和亚洲通常用于防止牛奶变质,即使没有冷藏。无论回收与否,利乐包都是一个很好的环保选择,因为它可以将牛奶的保质期延长到9个月。)”可知,该部分主要是说利乐包对牛奶的保护作用。所以,A项“Packaging protects milk.(包装保护牛奶。)”填入空格处,可以作为该部分的主题句,符合语境。故填A项。
39.根据空格后的句子“Once again, the environmental benefit of the food-protection technology outweighs the harmful impact of the packaging itself.(再一次,食品保护技术的环境效益超过了包装本身的有害影响。)”可知,空格处的句子应该表明食品保护技术的环境效益超过了包装本身有害影响的事实。所以,F项“It can reduce the need for refrigeration and the amount of milk that goes wasted.(它可以减少对冷藏的需求和浪费的牛奶量。)”填入空格处,符合语境。因为冷藏需要能量,而浪费牛奶也是对环境有害。故选F项。
40.空格后的句子“One example of waste-reducing packaging is the concept project shown from designer Drew Stanley. He designed a peanut butter jar made of a soft material which can be turned inside out and scraped clean, avoiding sticky food sticking to your fingers.(设计师德鲁·斯坦利展示的概念项目就是减少废物包装的一个例子。他设计了一种用柔软材料制成的花生酱罐,可以翻转过来刮干净,避免粘稠的食物粘在手指上。)”提到了设计师Drew Stanley设计了一种新的方式来解决罐装食物的浪费,由此可推知,空格处应与罐装食品造成浪费有关。G项“Food left behind in jars and bottles makes up a surprising amount of waste.(留在罐子和瓶子里的食物造成了惊人的浪费)”填入空格处,符合语境。故选G项。

【答案】 The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room. She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn’t believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr. Buttler said to her with determined eyes, “Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part—your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself.” Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. “Emily White!” Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel!
