But this time, I decided to go to the Gobi Desert. It wasn’t a common trip—it let me explore the history and beautiful scenery of Western China. Our journey started with a drive from Dunhuang. The city roads soon turned into the wide, open Gobi Desert. After two hours’ driving to the northwest, I reached Yumen Pass, a relic (遗迹) on the ancient Silk Road. Standing here, you can really feel the weight of history. I even thought of the famous poet Wang Zhihuan’s line: “Why must the Qiang flute bemoan the willow? The spring wind does not reach Yumen Pass.” After that, I continued to drive northwest until I reached the ruins (遗址) of Hecang City. It is an ancient city from the Western Han Dynasty. As the sun went down, warm light covered the yellow sand and old walls. It looked just like a living painting. I couldn’t help thinking what life was like here over 2,000 years ago. When the sunlight faded (减弱), I went northwest to Yadan National Park. I’ve watched stars from mountains and other deserts before, but nothing was as amazing as the “Devil City” in the Gobi. When night came, stars filled the sky. Unlike my hometown, the stars here shone brightly, and the desert was so quiet. For the first time, I wished time would stop so I would lose myself in this peace, far from the noisy city. 1.Why does the writer mention Wang Zhihuan’s poem in Paragraph 2? D.To introduce the poet’s love for Western China. 2.What looked like “a living painting” in the writer’s eyes? A.The starry sky at night. B.Hecang city in ancient times. C.The wide and open Gobi Desert. D.Yellow sand and old walls in sunlight. 3.Which map is about the writer’s trip? A. B. C. D. 4.How did the writer think of his trip to the “Devil City”? A.Noisy. In the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan had Liu Bingzhong plan Dadu City, with the central axis centered on the imperial city, showing “supremacy of imperial power” (皇权至上). In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was expanded. Emperor Chengzu of Ming built Yongdingmen at the south end and rebuilt the Bell and Drum Towers at the north. Many important buildings like Zhengyangmen, Tian’anmen, and those in the Forbidden City were arranged along it, making the axis grander.   Yongdingmen, the southern start, was the outer-city main gate in Ming and Qing, with a magnificent tower. Zhengyangmen, or “Qianmen”, the inner-city’s main south gate, had a city tower, an arrow tower, and an enceinte (瓮城), symbolizing old Beijing. Tian’anmen, once the imperial- city main gate, now represents New China.   The Forbidden City on the axis has three main halls. The Hall of Supreme Harmony, for major ceremonies, is grand with resplendent dragon-and-phoenix decorative paintings The Hall of Central Harmony is where the emperor rested before big events. The Hall of Preserving Harmony was for imperial examinations and entertaining nobles.   Jingshan, an imperial garden before, has the Wanchun Pavilion for overlooking the axis. Di’anmen, the imperial-city’s north gate in the past, and the Bell and Drum Towers, the ancient time-reporting center, are also on the axis.   This axis is both architectural and cultural. It follows “harmony between man and nature” (天人合一) and “supremacy of imperial power”, organizing various buildings. It holds rich traditional culture and Beijing’s folk culture, like the Spring-Festival temple fairs at the Bell and Drum Towers. Protecting it is crucial for preserving historical heritage and passing on Chinese culture. 1.What is the southern starting point of the Central Axis of Beijing? A.Zhengyangmen. B.Yongdingmen. C.Tian’anmen. D.The Bell and Drum Towers. 2.In which dynasty did the Central Axis of Beijing initially take shape? A.The Tang Dynasty. B.The Song Dynasty. C.The Yuan Dynasty. D.The Ming Dynasty. 3.Which of the following statements about the three main halls in the Forbidden City is wrong? A.The Hall of Supreme Harmony is used for major ceremonies. B.The Hall of Central Harmony is where the emperor takes a break before big ceremonies. C.The Hall of Preserving Harmony is for the emperor to hold banquets only. D.The Hall of Supreme Harmony has grand scale and splendid decoration. 4.The Central Axis of Beijing reflects the traditional concepts of “harmony between man and nature” and “________”. A.equality of all B.respect for elders C.supremacy of imperial power D.loyalty to the country 5.Why is it important to protect the Central Axis of Beijing? A.Because it is a modern architectural wonder. B.Because it shows the development of modern Beijing. C.Because it is easy to protect as it has no cultural value. D.Because it is rich in historical and cultural heritage and helps pass on Chinese traditional culture. Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed so that no matter where you stand, you can never see the whole thing at once. The mystery and the discovery have helped the classical gardens of China, especially those in Suzhou, remain popular attractions after all these years. Put simply, the aim of a classical Chinese garden is to deepen one’s admiration of nature. Besides just relaxing in nature, the classical Chinese gardens have another purpose—to inspire artistic expression like poetry, literature or painting. Nearly all Chinese gardens feature the things in the list below. Water Water is a necessary thing that no Chinese garden can go without. The water in a garden typically symbolizes a lake or even the ocean. Water can even symbolize communication, movement and dreams. Rocks Large rocks typically symbolize mountains. Many of the rocks in the Suzhou gardens come from Lake Tai, having been shaped by the flow of water over thousands of years. Smaller rocks are often on show in the fancy halls at a garden’s entrance. This shows the appreciation the garden owners had of these rocks. Plants You can’t have a garden without plants. Different plants and flowers are used for either symbolic or aesthetic (美学的) purpose—or both. Bamboo, for example, represents strength. Flowers, meanwhile, add color to a garden, with each carrying a symbolic meaning of its own. Gates & Windows Gates of different shapes divide different parts of a garden. The most common type of gate, the moon gate, is simply a circle. Windows are placed throughout the garden to allow the passage of light. You can also catch a glimpse of interesting trees or rocks on the other side from the window. Pavilions (亭) In Chinese gardens, pavilions are usually placed in some of the best viewing places. Sometimes a pavilion is placed where one can see the reflection (倒影) of the moon at night, or in the best place to listen to the sound of rain on the leaves above. In the past, pavilions were also used as places for garden owners to reflect, paint and write poems. 1.What does the underlined word “those” in paragraph 1 refer to? A.Plants. B.Paintings. C.Classical gardens. D.Mystery and discovery. 2.What’s the purpose of this text? A.To list some plants and flowers. B.To introduce classical Chinese gardens. C.To explain the history of classical gardens. D.To compare different classical gardens in China. 3.Which of the following best explains “glimpse” underlined in paragraph 6? A.Look. B.Visit. C.Guess. D.Feeling. 4.Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Nature Speaks for Itself B.Chinese Gardens and Western Gardens C.Getting Lost in Classical Chinese Gardens D.Finding Ways to Modern Arts and Buildings When most travellers think of Dunhuang in Gansu Province, they will choose Mogao Grottoes to visit first. 根据“The Central Axis of Beijing, the soul of the ancient capital, stretches about 7.8 kilometers from Yongdingmen in the south to the Bell and Drum Towers in the north, running through the old city’s core.” 根据“In the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan had Liu Bingzhong plan Dadu City, with the central axis centered on the imperial city”可知,北京中轴线最初在元朝形成。故选C。 3. 根据“The Hall of Preserving Harmony was for imperial examinations and entertaining nobles”可知,保和殿不仅用于皇帝宴请贵族,还用于科举考试,因此选项C“保和殿仅用于皇帝宴请”是错误的。故选C。 4. 根据“This axis is both architectural and cultural. It follows ‘harmony between man and nature’ and ‘supremacy of imperial power’”可知,北京中轴线反映了“天人合一”和“皇权至上”的传统理念。故选C。 5. 根据“Protecting it is crucial for preserving historical heritage and passing on Chinese culture.” D。 Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed so that no matter where you stand, you can never see the whole thing at once. A.Nature Speaks for Itself B.Chinese Gardens and Western Gardens C.Getting Lost in Classical Chinese Gardens D.Finding Ways to Modern Arts and Buildings 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了中国古典园林的特点和构成元素,包括水、石、植物、门窗和亭子等。 1. 根据“Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed…The mystery and the discovery have helped the classical gardens of China, especially those in Suzhou, remain popular attractions after all these years.” 根据“You can also catch a glimpse of interesting trees or rocks on the other side from the window.” 故选A。 4.
