Christine and Ryan are good friends. They both live on a farm on an island near Ireland.
One morning, Ryan came to Christine’s house. “Christine, let’s go to the beach.”
They went to the beach to look for shells (贝壳) and other beautiful things. Suddenly Christine shouted, “Look! There’s something in that net (网) over there.”
They ran over and found a small bird in the net. The bird was black and white, and it had orange legs.
“What kind of bird is that?” Ryan asked.
“I don’t know,” Christine answered.
They ran back to Christine’s house and showed the beautiful bird to Christine’s dad.
“It’s a young puffin (海鹦),” he told them. “Puffins catch fish in the water. They can fly and they are very good at swimming. There were lots of puffins on the island, but now there aren’t many.”
“Why not?” Christine asked.
“There aren’t many fish anymore,” said her dad. The children put the small puffin in a box. Christine’s mom gave the children some fish and they fed the puffin.
Ryan came over to Christine’s house every day to feed the puffin. It got bigger and bigger. One morning there was no puffin in the box.
“Where is it?” Christine asked her mom.
“I’m sure the puffin is with its friends out in the sea.”
It was a year later. Christine was looking for shells on the beach again. Suddenly, she heard Ryan shouting, “Come quickly, Christine!”

Recently I had a trip to Sydney with my parents. We visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals. Some are native (当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. Although we couldn’t carry koalas, I could take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念品) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them are very big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) of birds. I saw an old parrot (鹦鹉). It could “talk” and made a great impression on me.

Father’s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother’s Day, and just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. Father’s Day has become important in North America. And shopkeepers (店主) found it was a good way to get people to buy presents for their fathers from their shops.
By the way, very few countries have a Father’s Day, though some have Children’s Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more counties are having Mother’s Day, so maybe Father’s Day will also become popular. Now, what do people in North America do on Father’s Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do—buy a Father’s Day present for their fathers. They even tell a wife to buy a Father’s Day present—not for her father but for her husband, even if he is not a father yet. And they tell grandchildren to buy a Father’s Day present for their grandfathers.
The most important thing to remember about Father’s Day is that American children can show their love to their fathers in a more open way.

A. people to buy as many presents as possible
B. children to buy presents only for their fathers
C. women to buy presents only for their husbands

Dear Tom,
How are you doing? In China we have a lot of traditional festivals but my favorite festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival. Our family usually get together to celebrate it at home.
This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival was very special for me. I went to my grandparents’ house with my parents as usual. When I got to the house, my grandpa told me this year we would make mooncakes by ourselves. I thought it was really a great idea. Then my grandparents took out different kinds of materials and taught us how to make mooncakes. It was difficult but interesting. In the evening, we admired the moon and enjoyed handmade mooncakes. What a meaningful festival! I expect this festival because not only I can eat the moonakes and other special delicious dishes, but also the whole family can have a great time together.

Christine and Ryan are good friends. They both live on a farm on an island near Ireland.

In zoos, most of the animals are in cages (笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We could touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cuddly(令人想拥抱的).

16. Father’s Day was started just because ________.

What do you do when you come across a problem while doing your homework? Andy would take out his smartphone, open an app and search for the problem. Answers would soon appear on the screen. Nowadays, many students do homework with the help of the Internet like Andy. They search for information online, use apps or discuss homework through social networks like WeChat. “It’s convenient. You don’t have to wait or get a tutor (家庭教师) beside you,” Andy said. “You also learn by seeing how others work out problems.”
“It also improves our abilities,” said John, another student. He said it especially works for new types of homework.
John’s Chinese teacher often asks students to give speeches on great writers. When it comes to John’s turn, he usually searches online, picks out certain stories and makes PowerPoint presentations (演示).
“I’ve become skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office,” John said.
However, many students think this trend (趋势) also brings problems. Some students just copy the answers online without thinking. They become lazy.
A head teacher in Andy and John’s school said that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control (自制力).
