Lin Yutang was a famous writer, translator and inventor. He shared different cultures through his stories and even made a machine for languages. He was truly a man of many talents.
As a child, Lin loved reading and wanted to understand how the world worked, and that curiosity stayed with him all his life. He first studied in Shanghai, then went to Harvard University to further his studies. Later, he achieved his PhD (博士学位) in Germany. Lin learned about different languages and ways of thinking. This helped him become a cultural bridge between the East and the West.
Lin worked hard to share Chinese culture with the world. He became well-known for telling stories about Chinese life. In books like My Country and My People, he introduced Chinese ideas and daily life to Western readers. He also wrote novels like Moment in Peking. These stories showed how Chinese people lived and stayed strong during wartime. Lin also helped create a Chinese-English dictionary, which made it easier for people to understand Chinese words. Besides, Lin introduced Western culture to China. In 1924, he created the Chinese word “幽默” from the English word “humor”. Lin believed that humor showed a kind, open, forward-looking and wise way of living.
Lin’s creativity didn’t stop with writing and translation. He was also an inventor. Chinese characters (汉字) made typing a real challenge. Lin spent years designing a Chinese typewriter. Many young people today don’t want to be noticed by others. Why do they feel this way? Three students share their opinions in the posts.
I think there are two main reasons. First, students face heavy stress from schoolwork and future expectations. Being noticed often brings more pressure (压力). Second, young people want to protect their privacy (隐私). The Internet makes it easy for personal information to spread quickly, so staying low-key helps avoid unnecessary trouble.
I sometimes feel the same way. When I perform poorly in exams, I prefer to stay unnoticed, which helps me relax and feel more comfortable.
Some of my classmates dislike being the center of attention. They stay quiet in class and avoid speaking up. Pressure is a key reason. When you’re young, mistakes are easy to see and judgment comes quickly. Social media (媒体) makes this feeling stronger. Everyone online seems confident and perfect, making real-life attention more stressful.
I’m quite different, though. I enjoy being noticed, especially when I’m doing something I love. Last year, I joined a Chinese language competition. Standing on the stage under bright lights, I felt extremely excited.
Being quiet is not a weakness in Germany. Students who listen carefully and don’t try to stand out are often seen as serious and reliable (可靠的). That’s why many young people here avoid attention, including me.
Once, my history teacher asked me to present my project. Feeling uncomfortable, I spoke quickly and avoided eye contact. When I finished, I felt much better. It wasn’t fear—it was just the pressure of being watched.
This comes from our culture and habit. In Germany, we value order, teamwork and modesty. For me, confidence means being calm and thoughtful, even without attention.
28. According to He Yan, why do young people avoid attention?
A. They don’t like to communicate with others.
B. They are afraid of making mistakes in public.
C. They prefer to spend more time on the Internet.
D. They want to prevent trouble and reduce stress.
29. How is Ivana different from her classmates?
A. She enjoys being the center of attention sometimes.
B. She feels more stress from schoolwork than others.
C. She has a real gift for languages and stage designs.
D. She thinks social media makes people more confident.
30. How did Johanna feel when presenting in class?
A. She felt excited to speak up. B. She was afraid of her teacher.
C. She felt uneasy and nervous. D. She was excited and confident.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why young people feel stressed at school.
B. Why some young people avoid being noticed.
C. How social media influences young people’s lives.
D. How different cultures shape young people’s habits.

As the train moved forward, Holmes started to tell me the story.
“Boscombe Valley is in the countryside near a small town called Ross. A rich man, Mr. John Turner, lives there. He made money in Australia many years ago and then returned to England. “When people found old McCarthy, he was lying dead beside the pool with head wounds. James had blood on his hand and coat. The police arrested him for murder.”
“So James is the killer?” I asked.
“It looks bad for him,” Holmes replied, “but some people believe he’s innocent, including Miss Turner. So, Watson, this is why we’re going there instead of eating our breakfast at home.”

“No print, no year” is an old saying well-known to people in Suzhou, Jiangsu. The “print” here means Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints, a modern kind of nianhua.
Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints get their name from the Taohuawu area in Suzhou. Many people there made the prints in the past. They are famous for their bright colors, clear patterns and many different themes. In 2006, Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints were named a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Sun Yibo, an artist who bridges the ancient craft with modern pop culture, has worked on Taohuawu prints for over 20 years. “Taohuawu prints are nianhua, but they not only show menshen (door gods), flowers and birds, but also choose themes from popular culture,” said Sun.
The steps
Sun once made a woodblock print to show a scene in a game. He spent months working on it. “Each Taohuawu print follows the ‘one color on one carved block’ rule and is made with the colors printed on top of each other,” explained Sun. “To follow the rule, I needed to make six color blocks (版) to show a scene with six colors.”
It takes a long time to make a woodblock print, so few people want to learn this skill. But Sun and other artists in Suzhou are trying to let more young people know about it. “We have exhibitions and classes at school. I am happy to see some students starting to learn it in class,” said Sun.

D. How different cultures shape young people’s habits.

The two men knew each other there and were good friends.
“McCarthy has a son, James, who is eighteen years old. Turner has a daughter, Alice, the same age. Both men lost their wives. They live quiet lives with their servants (仆人).”
Holmes continued, “Now, let me tell you about what happened. Last Monday afternoon, McCarthy walked to Boscombe Pool, a small lake near his farm. His servant knew he had a meeting at three o’clock, but he never came home.”
“Two people saw McCarthy that day. An old woman and Mr. Turner’s worker, William Crowder, both said McCarthy was walking alone. Several minutes later, Crowder saw James following his father. James was carrying a gun.”
“A 14-year-old girl, Patience Moran, was walking in the woods. She saw the father and son by the pool. They were arguing (争吵) loudly. She thought James was going to hit his father, so she ran home, feeling scared.”
“Soon after, James arrived at his house. He told everyone, ‘My father is dead in the woods!’”

【33题详解】
根据“Last Monday afternoon, McCarthy walked to Boscombe Pool, a small lake near his farm.”可知,③麦卡锡先生独自走向博斯科姆比池排在首位;根据“Several minutes later, Crowder saw James following his father. James was carrying a gun.”可知,①有人看到詹姆斯拿着枪跟在他父亲后面排在第二位;根据“A 14-year-old girl, Patience Moran, was walking in the woods. She saw the father and son by the pool. They were arguing (争吵) loudly.”可知,②佩兴斯看到父子俩大声争吵排在第三位;根据“The police arrested him for murder.”可知,④警察因为詹姆斯身上有血而逮捕了他排在最后。所以正确的顺序是③①②④。
【34题详解】

Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints get their name from the Taohuawu area in Suzhou. Many people there made the prints in the past. They are famous for their bright colors clear patterns and many different themes.

Sun once made a woodblock print to show a scene in a game. It takes a long time to make a woodblock print, so few people want to learn this skill. But Sun and other artists in Suzhou are trying to let more young people know about it. “We have exhibitions and classes at school. I am happy to see some students starting to learn it in class,” said Sun.

Hello, everyone!
The skill I take the greatest pride in is Chinese calligraphy which has been popular for thousands of years.
My journey began two years ago when I watched a short video. I was attracted by the beauty of the ink flowing on the paper. At first, I had difficulty controlling my hand, making messy characters on the paper. However. I insisted on practising for two years. Slowly, I found peace and confidence in such a meaningful art form.
Calligraphy taught me far more than writing. Every time I write. I feel connected to centuries of Chinese culture and wisdom. It also helps me express myself and take on challenges bravely. It truly makes my life better.
Thank you for your attention.
