This year marks the 130th anniversary (周年) of Xu Beihong’s birth. Born in 1895 in Jiangsu province, Xu was one of the “fathers of modern Chinese art”.
Xu started learning Chinese painting when he was 9 years old. In 1919, he went to Paris to study sketching (素描) and learned about Western art. He worked hard to mix Chinese and Western art styles. In one of his famous works, Three Horses, Xu put together traditional Chinese coloring skills with Western realism (现实主义) to paint three strong horses standing under a big tree. After returning to China in 1927, Xu set up the National Central University Art Department.
While Xu was best known for painting horses, he also painted other animals, people and important historical scenes. Many of his animal paintings have deeper meanings. In Meeting of Forces in Tokyo (《会师东京》), painted in 1943, the artist shows a group of lions that stand for China and other countries fighting against fascism (法西斯). In the background, a rising red sun shows Xu’s strong belief in winning the World Anti-Fascist War.
Besides being a painter, Xu was also an art educator. He wanted his students to be creative and love beauty. During his time as director of the National Central University Art Department, he set up many new courses such as sketching, oil painting and art theory (理论). Feeling sweaty (出汗的) from a summer heat wave? Don’t worry. Not all your sweat has to go to waste. Researchers from University of California have developed a new device (设备) that produces energy from the sweat on your fingertips.
The device is called a biofuel cell (生物燃料细胞). From the outside, it looks like a simple piece of film connected to electrodes (电极). So how does the device work? When you stick the biofuel cell to your finger, it takes in sweat. The enzymes (酶) on the electrodes then help to produce electricity. Besides using the sweat, the device also produces small amounts of energy when it is pressed, so daily activities like typing, texting, or playing the piano are all good ways to produce electricity.
Some people may think it queer to choose fingertips as the source of sweat, but in fact, they are the sweatiest part of the body. Each finger produces between 100 and 1,000 times more sweat than most other areas.
The device is the most effective on-body energy producer. Before it is invented, most power producing wearable devices require wearers to perform exercise or depend on other sources, such as sunlight or large changes in temperature. But the new device uses a system to produce electricity from sweat in your fingertips, even if you are sleeping or sitting completely quietly. One of the researchers Lu Yin said, “Unlike other sweat-powered wearables, this one requires no exercise, no physical input from the wearer in order to be useful. This work is a step forward to making wearables more practical (实用) and convenient. It’s also quite comfortable to wear the device. The size of the device is about 1 cm2. “You can comfortably wear it for a long period of time,” said Yin.
However, at the moment, the device can only store up a little bit power. And it would take about three weeks of constant wear to power a smart phone, but the researchers hope to increase its power in the future.
48.What does the underlined word “queer” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Strange. B.Unsafe. C.Dirty. D.Traditional.
49.What can we infer from the passage?
A.It’s hard to wear the device for a long time.
B.When wearers wear the device, they should exercise.
C.Wearers should dry the sweat on her hands with a fan.
D.Wearers can send a text message to produce electricity.
50.What is the advantage of the biofuel cell?
A.It can power a smart phone in a day.
B.It can influence the temperature greatly.
C.It makes you comfortable when you are in pain.
D.It works for nearly 24 hours a day when you wear it.
51.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
52.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The History of the Biofuel Cell B.The Inventor of the Biofuel Cell
C.A New Technology—the Biofuel Cell D.A Traditional Technology—the Biofuel Cell

Do you want to have a super-clean world in your daily life? 53 Your socks would never smell bad. Thanks to the hard work of scientists, that world may be closer than you think.
Some scientists in the U.S. have developed a coating (涂料) called SLIPS. 54 You may know this plant as a “meat-eater.” Its leaves help it catch its food. These cup-shaped leaves have tiny holes on their surface. The holes hold a layer of water in place. This creates a super slippery (滑的) coating. If an insect flies onto the leaf, it will slip down into the plant.
55 It fills the tiny holes on the surface of cloth with a certain film (薄层) to make it very slippery. If some oil is spilled (洒落) on the cloth, for example, it will slip of without leaving a stain (污渍). For now, however, not all SLIPS cloth is breathable enough for daily wear. This means it may first be used to make special clothing for people such as medical workers.
56 When we wear socks, our feet sweat. Some bacteria (细菌) can grow fast in our warm, wet socks. They produce chemicals that make the socks smell bad.
Today, some stores sell special socks with very small pieces of silver in them. These pieces are so small that we can’t see them, but they are powerful. 57 But when you wash these socks, the silver may be washed away and cause pollution. Well, there’s still some work to be done before we can say goodbye to all smelly socks!
A.SLIPS works in a similar way.
B.Your clothes would never get dirty.
C.And what about those smelly socks?
D.More people like to use it in their daily life.
E.The idea for it came from the pitcher plant.
F.Those socks are good enough for daily wear.
G.They can kill the bacteria before the smell begins.

Sports Make Life Better
Good morning, dear teachers and schoolmates. I’m Li Hua from Class 5, Grade 9. It’s my honor to be here to share my speech with you.
Sports are necessary in our life. In Jiujiang, events like Lushan Cup Marathon and Poyang Lake Cycling Race show sports bring people together and build our strength.
Sports can shape both body and mind. When we play sports, we learn to never give up, just like marathon runners. This spirit helps us study harder. Exercise also makes our brain work better, so we focus easily and remember more in class. After studying, sports relax us and reduce stress.
For students, rope skipping, cycling, and badminton are perfect—they need little equipment and fit our daily life. Our school can hold class games to make us love sports more.
Let’s take part in sports like the people in Jiujiang do, and make sports a part of our daily life. Thank you!
