A new mobile app called Farm Assistant, developed by Wu Zeyin, makes farm work easier in Botswana.
Wu, an 11-year-old student from Zhejiang, moved to Botswana with his family seven years ago.
In Botswana, the desert climate is very common in most parts. “During the past years living in the country, I found there weren’t many kinds of fruits and vegetables sold at local supermarkets, and quality was poor,” he said. The low yield (产量) of common crops (庄稼) has much to do with the climate. For a long time, Botswana had to import many fruits and vegetables from foreign countries to meet the needs of its people.
In July last year, there was a pilot project to grow China’s water-saving and drought-tolerant (耐旱的) rice in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, which brought Wu some new ideas. When he got the news, he decided to develop an app for the local farmers. The app supports several crops commonly grown locally, including tomatoes, potatoes, onions, corn, carrots, and cabbage. Farmers who use the app can click on the crop picture to see its watering needs, seed (种子) price, selling price and yield. After planting the seeds, farmers click the timer to start, and the app reminds them what to do at each stage.
Wu said there is an old saying in China: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
4. _________makes it difficult to grow common crops.
A. The desert climate B. The poor seed quality
C. The farmer’s laziness D. The shortage of sunshine
5. What does the underlined word “import” mean?
6. What can we learn about this app?
A. Farmers can buy fruits from it. B. It was developed seven years ago.
C. It supports several crops except corn. D. Farmers can see the yield of the plants.
7. What can we infer (推断) from Wu Zeyin’s words “teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”?
A. He'll teach farmers how to fish.
B. It’s more important to learn ways.
C. He’ll develop a new app about fishing.
D. The saying brings Wu new ideas about fishing.
A 5. B 6. D 7. B

根据第二段中的“During the past years living in the country, I found there weren’t many kinds of fruits and vegetables sold at local supermarkets, and quality was poor.(在这个国家生活的过去几年里,我发现当地超市售卖的果蔬种类不多,而且质量很差)”以及“to meet the needs of its people(来满足民众的需求)”可知,当地果蔬产量不足、品质差,需要从国外“进口”果蔬,由此猜测import意为“进口”。
根据第三段中的“Farmers who use the app can click on the crop picture to see its watering needs, seed price, selling price and yield.(使用这款APP的农民可以点击农作物图片,查看其需水量、种子价格、售价和产量)”可知,农民可以通过这款APP查看作物产量。
根据前文吴泽胤研发APP帮助当地农民科学种植,以及“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.(授人以鱼,不如授人以渔)”这句谚语可知,吴泽胤认为传授种植方法、教会农民技能比直接提供帮助更重要,即学习方法更重要。故选B项。

Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance: for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to, know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent yourself.

D
Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, cannot teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula (公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in maths. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.
Above all, they knew how to use their brains.
12. The subject which is not spoken of in the article is _____
A. maths B. history
C. psychology D. physics
13. The teacher’s job is to teach ___________.
A. everything the students want to know
B. the students everything that they know
C. the students some facts of formulas
D. the students how to learn
14. Einstein, Newton and Galileo did so many things for mankind because_____.
A. they learned a lot at school
B. they knew how to learn new things outside class by themselves
C. they were so useful
D. they went to college and learned form professors
15. From the passage we know that if we want to be successful, we should _______.
A. only learn more at school
B. needn’t go to school
C. only learn science subjects
D. learn to learn at school and learn more outside school
C 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第一段“The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn.(教师的工作是向学生展示如何学习)”可知,老师的工作是教学生如何学习。
根据第一段中的“Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton and Galileo didn’t get everything from school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.(伟大的科学家,如爱因斯坦、牛顿和伽利略,并不是从学校得到一切。但他们都很成功。他们为人类发明了很多东西。他们成功的原因是他们一生努力工作,一刻也不浪费。他们会边读边问很多问题,做了成千上万个实验)”可推知,爱因斯坦、牛顿和伽利略为人类做了这么多的事情,是因为他们在课堂之外的生活中善于思考,善于学习,勤奋努力。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. But they were all so successful.(伟大的科学家,如爱因斯坦、牛顿和伽利略,并不是从学校得到一切)”可推知,如果我们想要成功,我们应该学会在学校学习和在校外学习。

根据上文“ But there are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our schools or jobs. Such changes often leave us without a friend.(但是在我们的生活中也有这样的时候,比如我们最近搬到了一个新的城镇,或者换了学校或工作。这样的变化常常使我们失去朋友)”可知,有时生活中的变化会使我们失去朋友。空格处应该描述失去朋友后应该再交朋友的情况,结合下文“But for many of us, the process (过程) is difficult. There are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.(但对我们很多人来说,这个过程是困难的。这里有一些关于如何交朋友和维持友谊的有用建议。)”可知,空格处需要解释“这个过程”是什么,且结合But可知空格处叙述内容与“困难的”相反,E选项“对有些人来说,结交新朋友很容易”符合题意。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends.(开始交谈是结交新朋友的第二重要步骤)”提到启动对话是交朋友的第二重要步骤,结合下文“You can always start the conversation.(你可以随时开始谈话)”可知,不要等着别人和你说话,你要主动和别人说话。
根据上文“It is a good thing to stay in touch (保持联系). However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.(保持联系是件好事。
结合小标题“Enjoy your friendship(享受你的友谊)”和下文“Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be(试着不要改变他们,让他们变成你想要的样子)”可知,本段描述的是欣赏朋友原本的样子,不改变他们。

8. In the author’s view, the biggest difference between high school and middle school is____.

B. How to Become an Active Learner in High School
C. What to Prepare to Keep up with Everything in High School

11. Who is the article intended for?
A. Parents of high school students. B. Teachers in high school.
C. Students in Senior One. D. Students in junior school.
