Confucianism(儒家思想) has been followed by Chinese people for more than two thousand years.
To help people understand how to behave towards others, Confucianism teaches the Five Constants(五常). These are ren, yi, li, zhi and xin. They are general virtues(美德) around the world. The most important two are ren and li.
Ren is the feeling of care and love we should have for others. Confucius explained ren could best be understood as loving others. He is famous for teaching people, “What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others”. It is quite similar to what is known in the West as the Golden Rule (treat others as you wish to be treated).
While the meaning of ren is easy to understand, li is a little harder to express. It can be thought of as duty or even respect. Generally, li is the way we should connect with people in our everyday life. In Confucian writings, discussions about li include the proper way to drink tea and how to remember ancestors(祖先). While ren is mostly about our opinions and feelings, li is about how we express our opinions and feelings towards others and towards the world around us.
Perhaps the most well-known Confucian virtue is xiao. This is the duty children have to their parents. Xiao means loving, respecting, obeying and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. In Confucianism, xiao is important for a harmonious(和谐的) society: Without it, the whole world would fall into a mess.
1. Which are the most important of the Five Constants?
A. Ren and yi. B. Ren and li. C. Li and xin. D. Yi and zhi.

A. 博学于文,约之以礼。 B. 学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。
C. 己所不欲,勿施于人。 D. 君子和而不同,小人同而不和。
3. Which of the following is an example of li?
A. Building a peaceful society. B. Taking care of one’s children.
C. Obeying rules for drinking tea. D. Learning all through one’s life.
4. What does the passage mainly tell us about Confucianism?
A. Its general virtues. B. Its long history.
C. Its new challenges. D. Its golden rules.

Pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds show signs of feeling less isolated, according to scientists.
The study, which involved giving the birds a computer that they could use to make video calls, found that they began to engage in more social behaviours including preening, singing and playing. The birds were given a choice of which “friend” to call on a touchscreen computer and the study showed that the parrots that called other birds most often were the most popular choices.
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow and a co-author of the study, said that video calls had helped many people feel less isolated in the last few years. She added, “There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit(受益) from video calling too. If we gave them the chance to call other parrots, would they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers?”
Their study of 18 pet parrots suggested that there were, indeed, benefits for the birds. In the wild, many species of parrots live in large groups, but as pets, they are kept alone or in a small group. Living alone can cause birds to develop mental problems, which include rocking, walking back and forth, or self-harming behaviours such as feather-plucking.
The parrots first learned to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on the screen of a computer to make a call to that bird, with the help of their owners. In total the birds made 147 calls to each other during the study, while owners took detailed notes on the birds’ behaviour and the researchers later reviewed the video footage.
Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University said that the parrots “seemed to know” that they were communicating with other birds. “All the bird owners in the study said they valued the experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.
“I was quite surprised at so many different behaviours,” said Hirskyj-Douglas. “Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their toys.”
5. The main purpose of the study is to find out ______.
A. if parrots can learn to make video calls B. if parrots can benefit from video calling
C. why parrots can have so many benefits D. why parrots can develop mental problems
6. What can we learn about the pet parrots?
A. Their way to communicate is singing. B. Most of them used to live in large groups.
C. The most popular ones made most calls. D. They can make video calls by themselves.
7. Which word has the closest meaning to “isolated”?
A. Amazed. B. Calm. C. Scared. D. Lonely.
8. The following paragraph can best go after ______.
Video calling could reproduce some of the social benefits of living in a group, according to Rébecca Kleinberger, of Northeastern University and first author of the study.
A. Paragraph 1 B. Paragraph 2 C. Paragraph 3 D. Paragraph 4

Inner painting, a kind of traditional Chinese art, is marked as a national-level intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产). Inner painting artists traditionally create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle by using special fine brushes that can enter the tiny bottles. It has a long history and is mainly divided into four major schools: Beijing, Hebei, Shandong, and Guangdong.
When we look at the inner painting of an object, we experience indescribable beauty. Patterns on the painting often symbolize people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most marketable ones are landscapes(风景), followed by flowers and birds.
The production of inner painting is difficult because it requires high precision(精确) and the process of painting is totally reversed(反向的). During painting, there is no room for corrections. And a shaky hand leads to mistakes. Only those skilled and confident in their abilities can paint well. Most artists need to learn inner painting for years before creating great and fine pieces. Even if they already know how to paint, they need to practise drawing lines from the beginning when they start inner painting.
Inner painting has its advantages due to its uniqueness(独特性), but it also faces challenges such as limited market needs, and a shortage of learners and talented artists to drive its development.
Luckily, today’s artists are trying to make inner painting more included in our lives. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets and folding screens. One of the artists invented a new type of brush, which improved the speed of drawing. Some young artists are making use of social media to help more people learn about inner painting skills.
Looking ahead to the future, inner painting artists wish the art to be more available to the public, and win high market acceptance. They also hope inner painting courses can be offered at school for young people to take.
1. Where do inner painting artists traditionally create their works?
_________________________________________________________________________
2. What do patterns on the inner painting often symbolize?
_________________________________________________________________________
3. What is not good for the development of inner painting?
_________________________________________________________________________
4. How are some young artists helping more people learn about inner painting skills?

5. If your school offers an inner painting course, would you like to take it or not? Why?
