In a neighbourhood, a service team of volunteers—“Shared Children (共享儿女)”—is getting popular. It works hard to help old people without children around to be happy.
The volunteers made a big difference in the neighbourhood. They have helped more than seventy old people these days. The volunteers learnt about the old people's needs in their lives and gave them a helping hand.
At first, the neighbourhood started an initiative to help some people in need in time. However, the neighbourhood did not have enough workers to help so many old people. So the idea of “Shared Children” came out.
The number of the volunteers in the team is more than 108 now. They help the old people buy things, take a walk with them and cook for them.
___▲___ Fan Fawen is a retired train driver. He joined the volunteer team two years ago. He often helps to repair something in the old people's homes, buys them fruit and vegetables and carries heavy things, like bags of rice and boxes. Liu Chunyan, 43, is also one of the volunteers.
“Many old people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should help them and talk with them more often,” Liu says.

At the age of 14, I knew that I wanted to be an animal doctor when I was older. I liked sea animals, so when a friend told me about ARCHELON,a sea turtle (海龟) protection organization in Greece, I was really excited. So I spent my summer holiday last year as a volunteer in it.
The turtles are among the oldest species on Earth, but they are dying off in large numbers because of fishing and pollution. This was a surprise to me when I got
training in Athens before starting my first project. There I learnt fishermen caught sea turtles when these small animals were trying to eat their fish. For the fishermen, fewer fish mean less money, so they're angry with the sea turtles. Sea turtles also face the problem of eating plastic bags in the sea.
I spent my summer holiday learning and having fun with five different projects, but I liked the last one best. We camped in an old museum with no electricity or water.
However, the main problem was that there were many insects sharing the museum with us. But even that could not stop me from enjoying my time with the sea turtles and sharing stories around a campfire.
Volunteering is really wonderful. If you want to get job experience or simply have fun or meet great people, just go for it.

I am Lisa. A year ago, I volunteered to teach at a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. As a volunteer teacher, I travelled a long way to the remote area. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school and the children there. However, my heart sank(心里一沉) when I arrived there. It wasn't what I expected. It didn't look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2, and 3, and one for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.
The children welcomed me enthusiastically on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level. To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it. However, they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.
I was busy preparing lessons, correcting test papers every night. I really enjoyed teaching these lovely and
hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learnt a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.
I have worked in Longzhou for a year now. I'm very happy, and the experience has been very useful for me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.
