Is there intelligent life on other planets? For years, scientists have said “No.” or “We don't know.” But today it's changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe there's intelligent life somewhere in the universe and we will soon communicate with these beings.
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is TIME. Scientists believe the universe is about 13 billion years old. “It's long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is SIZE—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble telescope (哈勃望远镜) show there are at least 100 billion galaxies (星系),” says Shostak. “ Our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the Earth.”
Long ago, looking for signs of intelligent life in the universe was hard. Now, powerful telescopes let scientists discover smaller planets, of the size of Mars or the Earth, in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space visited the Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as with radio signals. Actually, they may be trying to communicate with us, but we don't have right tools to receive their messages. However, it's changing. Soon, we will make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”
( )21. How old is the universe according to scientists?
A. About 13 million years old.
B. About 100 million years old.
C. About 13 billion years old.
D. About 100 billion years old.
C
( )22. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The age and size of the Earth.
B. Our galaxy—the Milky Way.
C. Why there may be intelligent life on other planets.
D. The Earth—the only planet with intelligent life.
C
( )23. Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
A. Because astronomers were not interested in it.
B. Because scientists didn't find the Milky Way at that time.
C. Because scientists were not allowed to discover planets.
D. Because there were not any powerful telescopes.
D
( )24. Why have beings from space NOT visited us yet according to Shostak?
A. Because they are afraid of us.
B. Because it is a long way to travel to the Earth.
C. Because they don't want to visit us.
D. Because they don't know how to use radio signals.
B
( )25. What does the underlined phrase “life forms” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Messages.
B. Radio signals.
C. Astronomers.
D. Intelligent beings.

Last week our class did a survey of whether aliens exist in the universe or not. Here are the results. 40% of my classmates believe aliens exist and live on faraway planets. And 35% say there are no aliens and humans are alone in the universe. 25% are not sure and think there should be more evidence to prove that aliens exist.
In my opinion, the universe is huge, so it's hard to believe there are only living things on Earth. I hope we can receive messages from outer space and make friends with aliens one day.
THANKS!
