Jason Sotiris calls it “the moment”. It comes when a child has been in hospital for days, or weeks, or more. And suddenly something magical happens.
“There’s a knock on the door,” he says. “You look up, and you see your favourite superhero — Iron Man or Captain Marvel. And that reaction is what we call ‘the moment’.” A visit from a superhero is pretty exciting in itself. But these superheroes bring more than just high-fives.
“This superhero says...hey, I’ve heard about you,” Jason says. “You have been so brave that you have earned a spot among other superheroes. The only thing you need is a costume.” And the superhero presents the child with a Supertee, which can help them tap into their own natural superpowers.
Jason Sotiris created Supertee when his daughter Angela was hospitalised with a rare cancer after her first birthday, and he came up with the idea to create a T-shirt designed to make changing clothes easy. Supertee is X-ray friendly with underarms that open easily for temperature checks and sides which come apart quickly with removable buttons. Best of all, it builds courage. The superhero theme was inspired by Jason’s three-year-old son who dressed up as Batman to save his younger sister.
“There is research showing pretend play, like being a superhero, helps a child put psychological distance between themselves and the problem at hand. It’s known as ‘The Batman Effect’ and allows children to step back from a problem and think about it from multiple angles, seeing different options for a solution. It helps fight boredom and keep up spirits for children,” said Jason.
Recipients have included eight-year-old Indyana Wedderburn, who has a rare and incurable form of disease that has led to frequent brain operation. “It’s more than just a T-shirt. It has given the family strength,” says her mum. “His creation is genius. Jason cares because he can relate to what it’s like.”
4. How will a young patient probably feel at “the moment”?
A. Surprised. B. Scared. C. Upset. D. Relieved.
5. What’s the highlight of Supertee?
A. It’s radiation-proof. B. It’s conveniently designed.
C. It’s smartly controlled. D. It’s environmentally friendly.
6. What does the author aim to do in paragraph 5?
A. Prove the popularity of Batman. B. Reveal problems children have.
C. Offer the supporting evidence. D. Lead into a new topic.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Brain diseases are incurable. B. Creations come from geniuses.
C. Supertee has magical medical value. D. Supertee offers great spiritual support.

Scientists have found the world’s biggest seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas. Seagrass refers to dozens of different species of flowering plants that live entirely underwater, producing energy through photosynthesis (光合作用) by absorbing sunlight. Like their land-based relatives, seagrasses have roots and leaves and also produce seeds. Seagrasses grow in salty coastal waters around the world, usually in shallow waters where sunlight is more plentiful. Since seagrasses carry out the process of photosynthesis, they are known to be very effective at storing carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas. This is because photosynthesis involves plants using sunlight to transform carbon dioxide into oxygen.
These underwater plants play an important role in carbon sequestration, in which carbon is stored in the environment rather than being allowed to float freely in the atmosphere where it can contribute to global warming. According to Gallagher, one of the new study’s authors, carbon enters the ocean as part of the carbon cycle, and the seagrass takes in this carbon through photosynthesis via their leaves. This is part one. The second part is when the seagrass transports this carbon through itself, burying and storing it in its root system. Seagrass stores this carbon permanently.
The purpose of the study by Gallagher and his colleagues was to map seagrass in the Bahamas, using data from 15 tiger sharks equipped with tracking instruments that could also take images of the sea floor. That information was then combined with reports from 2,500 surveys by human divers.
Mark Huxham, professor of teaching and research in environmental biology, said “This brilliant study uses imaginative and exciting new technology, in partnership with tiger sharks. We know seagrass is important for the health of our seas and our planet, but there are major gaps in our understanding about it.”
8. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The cause of photosynthesis.
B. Living conditions for seagrass.
C. Environmental effect of seagrass.
D. The introduction of photosynthesis.
9. What does the underlined part “carbon sequestration” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. Absorbing carbon from the air.
B. Reducing carbon in the roots.
C. Releasing carbon into the air.
D. Keeping carbon in sea plants.
10. What may Mark Huxham agree with?
A. Scientists have fully studied seagrass.
B. The study contributes to a new technology.
C. There is still a lot of work to study seagrass.
D. Tiger sharks will be the focus of future studies.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To inform. B. To criticize. C. To advertise. D. To persuade.

For some readers, a dictionary opens up a world. Dictionaries contain multiple pleasures, such as settling word-game wars by turning actual pages. For the rest, a dictionary is either outdated or strictly online. In 2012, Encyclopaedia Britannica stopped printing new editions, going digital-only.
In his book, Unabridged: The Thrill of (and Threat to) the Modern Dictionary, American journalist Stefan Fatsis writes of the shift brought about by our decade-old dependence on search engines: “Definitions, good and bad, were a click away, and most people didn’t care or couldn’t tell which was which: expert research, scraped data, zombie (僵尸) websites, whatever popped up in a search.”
When I was a child, I loved dictionaries, and so did every sensible parent in Calcutta. If your child was literate, one of the 20 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary or an illustratedCollins was the surest way to keep them happily occupied, setting them off on hunts for lost or forgotten words.
Fatsis sees dictionary-making as “a human endeavor (努力) stretching back to the third millennium BCE”. From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track “the endless shifts in language”.
Change is inevitable, though Fatsis also asks what we lose in the name of convenience. He writes, “the job of the dictionary was firmly established… By the time I finished this book, it wasn’t clear how much longer flesh-bone-and-blood lexicographers would be needed to document the march of the English language. Between traditional search engines and AI-enhanced search through LLMs (large language models), the way we look up words, and find meaning in language itself, has changed.”
We can’t claim that humanity still needs physical dictionaries. Like encyclopedias and atlases, the best of them have long moved online. Indeed, the starting points of most search engines were the encyclopedias and dictionaries compiled (编纂) by experts. But I plan to hold on to my beloved, dog-eared physical dictionaries — such priceless time capsules, one of the last paradises of freedom from the endless scroll of digital content.
12. What has reduced people’s reliance on physical dictionaries?
A. The decline of the print media.
B. The convenience of online lookup.
C. People’s indifference to accuracy.
D. Publishers’ insistence on going digital.
13. What can we infer about the future of real-life lexicographers?
A. Their workload will double.
B. They will remain in demand.
C. Their existence is threatened.
D. They need to upgrade their skills.
14. Why does the author stick to physical dictionaries?
A. They boost long-term memory.
B. They last longer than digital files.
C. They offer an escape from screens.
D. They give more authoritative definitions.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Word in Favor of Dictionaries
B. My Love for Looking up Words
C. A Best-seller on the Theme of Change
D. Human Endeavors in Dictionary-making

Today was the finals of the Dance Competition. Our team of five had me as the lead dancer; then there was Grace, my best friend and Eric, a dance lover who is a master in perfecting our choreography (编舞); and two talented twins, with such flexibility and grace on the stage that one cannot take their eyes off them.
We had found a perfect coach for our team. Jackie, a cousin of Eric’s, worked in a dance school. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly agreed when she saw the progress we had made so far.
In the dressing rooms, there were so many other competitors preparing for their performance, rushing here and there.
Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured “Who are they?”
We turned to follow his stare, among many people, four beautiful girls along with a lean boy had just walked in.
“They’re first-rate!” cried Grace, “more like fashion models.”
They sure were. A look at the list of competitors told me they were from “Tweekverse”, the most famous dance school in the whole country.
Jackie came up behind us, “Guys, it’s time, come on. Let’s go!”
“Oooh do you get the vibe (氛围)?” Grace was excited. I could understand her, I didn’t feel any less thrilled.
When we entered the concert hall, my jaw literally just dropped. It was massive. There were so many people. The four judges, who were seated at a large panel, did look very serious.
The competition started. The first performances were brilliant. One team had the neon (霓虹) theme, in which they wore shine-in-the-dark costumes and the whole place was dark. I was attracted to their impressive display. Obviously, everybody was. The judges’ cards displayed the scores. They were marking out of ten.
The next performances were even better, but for us, they became more competitive. The group from Tweekverse was the best. Their costumes, charming faces and fascinating performance impressed everyone.

C Offer the supporting evidence.

From the Akkadians to Sanskrit scholars, what dictionary makers hoped to do went far beyond the already tricky task of writing definitions: their job was to explain and track “the endless shifts in language”.

Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured, “Who are they?”
Let’s go!”
“Oooh, do you get the vibe (氛围)?” Grace was excited.

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the final score — 9. 5 on the screen.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】It was our turn next. I felt goose bumps and my hands were shaking. My teammates also seemed very nervous. Jackie immediately worked out our expressions. “Hey, it’s going to be alright guys. You have got to enjoy yourself, move with the beat and dance your heart out.” she encouraged us. As we went up the stage, I felt a new energy. We were going to show the judges how excellently we could not only dance, but also make the audience connect and feel with us. That determination and courage made me and our team ace the competition.
I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the final score — 9.5 on the sereen. It was the highest mark yet, and ours was the last performance. The crowd was bowled over by us. As we were bowing in response to the standing ovation we received. I glimpsed sideways and saw a beaming Jackie cheering with the audience. Our rivals came to meet us too. I could detect a note of disappointment in their “Congrats”. However, that was not what caused me to grin, it was just my elation at how we outshone them with our performance.
