Lin Buran, a 40-year-old man from Canada, has lived in China for over 10 years. He loves Chinese classical literature and has created over 4,200 paintings based on the book A Dream of Red Mansions and many Chinese poems over the years.
To many people, Lin seems a little unusual. He lives in a 9-square-meter room in Nanchang, paying 350 yuan in rent (租金) each month. His bed is less than 1.5 meters long, which is too short for a 1.86-meter-tall man to sleep on. In his small room, there is a table. Books are everywhere and lots of paintings are under the table. Although he lives in such a small house, Lin isn’t sad because he feels that he carries a big world in his heart.
Some of Lin’s habits also seem kind of odd. For example, he doesn’t use a smartphone or WeChat. His favorite way to travel is walking. His friend Zhang Ke says, “He is lively and thoughtful, even though he seems a little different from others.”
Lin enjoys his simple life in Nanchang and has found the meaning in it. “I can do what I like. I’m very happy now,” he says. Lin’s life serves as a good example of the old saying, “Though my dwelling (住所) is humble (简陋的), it is my virtues (品德) that bring it fame.”

Passage 5
A Farewell (告别) Song
Wang Wei
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Have you learned this poem in your Chinese textbook? It is a famous poem by Wang Wei, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty. He is good at writing poems and drawing. When talking about Wang Wei, people often say there are pictures in his poems and there are poems in his pictures. A Farewell Song is about saying goodbye to a friend. This poem is full of beauty and imagination.
In the lines “No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain; The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green”, a picture of silence (宁静) and peace appears before our eyes. After a morning rain in spring, everything feels refreshed: the hotel looks green and the willows (柳树) look green and fresh. In ancient China, willow branches were often used (被用作) as a symbol of farewell (告别). Chinese people often give them as gifts when they say goodbye to their friends.
“I invite you to drink a cup of wine again” expresses the poet’s warm and true feelings of not wanting to say goodbye to his friend. Having another drink together is like a special way to say goodbye. Finally, “West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen” shows the feeling of being alone and missing someone. It also shows his love and care for his friend.
A Farewell Song creates a feeling of quiet sadness. It mixes beautiful pictures and human feelings to express the common experience of saying goodbye.
