Passage 4
Grandpa Owl always said, “The forest used to be calm.” But I, a young sparrow (麻雀), live in Shan State, Myanmar, and have only known storms and floods.
Last year, humans cut down many trees near the river. They built big machines that made loud noises day and night. As a result, we couldn’t sleep at all. “Trees hold the soil,” Grandpa warned, but no one listened. Then came the heavy rain. Without trees, the soil was washed away, turning the river into a wild, brown torrent (激流). It also flooded our nests—we barely (勉强) made it to safety.
This month, strong winds blew down our tree. Grandpa said, “Winds never used to be this fierce. Humans take too much from the forest,” he sighed, “so nature fights back.”
We now live in a small, bare patch Most animals miss the old forest, where rain gently watered flowers and winds sang softly through the leaves. Maybe if humans stop taking too much, nature can find its balance again. But for now, we birds stay alert (警觉的) and worried. Could anybody help us?
1. Why couldn’t the sparrow have a good sleep last year?
A.Because it rained too heavily. B.Because the machines were too noisy.
C.Because humans cut down too many trees. D.Because Grandpa Owl was always talking.
2. What does the underlined word “fierce” mean?

3. What are the birds worried about?
A.Losing their home. B.Washing away the earth.
C.Cutting down the trees. D.Staying in the small patch.
4. What can we infer from Grandpa’s words?
A.He lived hard all his life but still had a bright dream of the future.
B.He thought humans were too silly to share the world with.
C.He had the ability to stop the humans’ bad actions but he didn’t do so.
D.He knew the connections between human activities and changes in nature.

Tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons are powerful storms.
North America has tornadoes and hurricanes while China has typhoons. Every year, these storms cause serious damage in different parts of the world.
Tornadoes are very dangerous and move quickly. 1 . They form suddenly during thunderstorms and look like turning, dark funnel-shaped cloud. Though small (usually 100-500 meters wide), their strong winds can destroy buildings immediately. The U.S. gets about 1,200 tornadoes yearly, especially in “Tornado Alley”.
Hurricanes bring heavy rain and strong winds. These huge storms form over warm Atlantic Ocean water. With winds over 120 km/h, they can last for days and flood coastal areas. Hurricane Katrina (2005) caused over 1,800 deaths in the U. S.
Typhoons affect China every year. Typhoons are the same as hurricanes but happen in the Pacific Ocean. 2 . Typhoon Haiyan (2013) was one of the strongest in history.
3 . They can throw dangerous objects, bring heavy floods (such as hurricanes or typhoons), and cut off power for days.
4
First, always watch the weather news to know about coming storms. Get ready by preparing important things like food, water, and flashlights.

故填The。
故填yourself/yourselves。
故填If。
how to do sth. 故填to deal。
故填And。

A Safety Drill for Natural Disasters
Last Friday afternoon, our school held a safety drill for natural disasters on the playground and in the classroom.
First, we practiced earthquake safety. When the alarm sounded, we quickly hid under our desks. After that, we practiced fire escape. We covered our mouths with wet towels and ran downstairs in order. The whole process was fast and orderly.

D.He knew the connections between human activities and changes in nature.

A typhoon is a powerful storm that brings strong winds and heavy rain. It can cause a lot of damage, especially in coastal areas. During a typhoon, there are very strong winds that can knock down trees and power lines. The heavy rain can cause flooding, and tall waves can damage buildings near the coast.
In the eye of a typhoon, the weather is surprisingly calm. The winds stop and the rain may pause. But this is only temporary. After the eye passes, the storm returns with strong winds and rain from the opposite direction.
When a typhoon is coming, it’s important to prepare. People should stay indoors and close all windows and doors. They should also have food, water, and flashlights ready in case the power goes out. Listening to weather reports can help people know when it’s safe to go outside.
After the typhoon passes, there may be a lot of cleanup to do. Fallen trees and branches need to be removed. Broken windows and damaged roofs need to be repaired. Communities often come together to help each other after a typhoon.
Typhoons are powerful and dangerous, but with the right preparation, people can stay safe and recover from the damage they cause.
1. What does a typhoon bring?

5 . If there’s a tornado, go to your basement or a small room without windows right away. For big storms like hurricanes, stay inside your house and don’t go near windows. After the storm, be careful! Don’t touch broken electric wires and stay away from flood water. Only drink water that has been boiled to make it safe.
Remember: Getting ready before a storm can help protect you and your family!
