二、阅读五选四。(2'×4=8')
Scientists believe the Earth is 4.6 billion years old. However, the mountains, valleys (山谷), hills, rivers, deserts and forests we see today are much younger than that. For example, Mount Qomolangma is about 60 million years old, and the Amazon rainforest is only 10 million years old. The youngest sea in the world is the Baltic Sea, at about 15,000 years old.___17___
The Earth is always changing because of volcanoes (火山), earthquakes and of course, wind and rain. Some of these changes are very slow, and others are quick.___18___For example, rivers of ice can cut through mountains and make lakes and deep valleys. Many volcanoes are under the oceans, and sometimes they become new islands. This is happening in the South Pacific.
It's normal for our planet to change, but at the moment, scientists think it's changing faster than usual.___19___The weather is getting wetter in some places and drier in others, and there are more big storms. According to the research, the sea level will continue to rise in the next hundred years. As a result, many cities will possibly be covered by water, and much of the most productive farming areas will be lost.
__20__. However, they can be beneficial to some people. For example, as the Arctic is getting warmer, some people in Greenland now own businesses and sell vegetables they grow on their land.
A. Some changes are too small to notice.
B. That's because changes happen all the time.
C. These changes will bring great harm to the planet.
D. Water and ice can make great changes to the planet.
E. Some deserts are growing and many forests are getting smaller.

五、阅读问答问题 (2'×3+4=10')
A powerful windstorm swept through North China on April 11, turning the skies orange and making trees dance like crazy. According to weather reports, winds reached over 130 km/h (as strong as a tropical storm (热带风暴)) in mountainous areas of Beijing and Hebei, while flat areas experienced winds of 90 -110 km/h. This kind of storm is very unusual for April, and it lasted for more than 48 hours, knocking down street signs and forcing airplanes to cancel flights.
Besides strong winds, the storm carried thick sand and dust from Mongolia and China's northwest deserts. The thick sand and dust darkened the sky, making it look like nighttime during the day. In cities like Beijing and Tianjin, the air pollution reached the worst level possible, with an Air quality index (空气质量指数) of 500. People had to wear masks to protect their health and avoid breathing in dirty air. Schools closed, parks shut down, and delivery services received many orders as people stayed indoors.
The storm caused many dangers, including:
*Falling signs
· *Flying trash and branches
· *Tipped-over (翻倒) trucks on highways
Experts warned that the wind was strong enough to lift small vehicles. At the same time, heavy snowstorms in Inner Mongolia made the situation even worse.
How did people stay safe?
Scientists gave the following advice:
☆Close windows tightly
☆Stay indoors
☆Move loose (未固定牢的) items inside
One Beijing student said, "It felt like nature was challenging us." Many students had online classes, but the loud wind noises made it hard to hear.
