I can’t remember the last time I used cash (现金) in China. With WeChat and Alipay, I can pay for everything with my mobile phone. But when I went back to the UK for a holiday, I had some culture shock in my home country. Many things I thought of as commonplaces (寻常事物) in my everyday life in China were quite fresh in the eyes of my old friends.
Mobile payment wasn’t accepted in most shops. I had to take out my wallet and went back to using notes. I couldn’t order takeout at any time I like because the delivery service would take too much time. If I wanted to try something delicious, I would have to go to the restaurant in person.
Of course, we can pay electronically in the UK. People have their bank cards. But most people still use cash. They worry that using mobile payment will lead to their money being stolen by online thieves. They don’t put too much trust in mobile payment systems. This is understandable. According to a 2022 report, more than £4 billion was stolen online in the UK and online shopping accounted (占) about one third of the thefts.
But still, it seems that mobile or at least digital (数字的) payment will lead the way in the future in the UK, just as it is here now in China. According to the gov.uk website, the Bank of England is now looking at using a digital pound. But the real question is: Will the British public be willing to trust it?

C.Because he couldn’t order takeouts with his mobile phone.
D.Because the food in the UK wasn’t as delicious as that in China.
28.What is the writer’s purpose in mentioning the 2022 report?
A.To prove that mobile payment is popular in the UK.
B.To show that few people in the UK want to pay electronically.
C.To show that there is really a danger in mobile payment.
D.To prove that people should never depend on mobile payment.
29.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the digital pound?
A.Doubtful. B.Hopeful. C.Satisfied. D.Interested.
30.In which part of a newspaper can we probably read the passage?
A.HISTORY. B.OPINION. C.TRAVEL. D.HEALTH.

Sunshine does make people happier. Imagine how cheerful you are when it clears up after long, cold rainy days. Let’s discover the science behind sunlight.
Sunlight causes you to produce a chemical (化学物质) called serotonin (血清素). When you are exposed to sunlight, your body will make more serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin will keep you in good spirits. At night, when there is little or no light, your body produces another chemical melatonin (褪黑激素). It helps your body relax and will make you feel tired, which can prepare you for a good night’s sleep. You should keep a good balance between these two chemicals.
However, for many people, it is hard to balance sunlight with darkness. People who stay indoors a lot may not get enough sunlight. The light in a house is usually about 100 times less than that outside on a sunny day. That’s why it is believed that those people should get outside in the sunshine. They can get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air and be happy, all at the same time.
There are places where it gets dark for a long time in the winter. People in those places are more prone to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) (季节性情感障碍). People with SAD usually go through bad experiences, such as low energy and sadness. The most common treatment for those people is to sit under bright artificial (人工的) lights for some time.
The roles that sunshine plays in people’s lives are more than those above. For example, your body produces Vitamin D (维生素D) from sunlight, which is important for being healthy. In fact, there is more science about sunlight for you to discover. So next time, when you notice the sunshine on your shoulder, take a moment to think, “Why do we love sunshine?”

B.People who stay indoors a lot should get outside in the sunshine.
C.The light in a house is usually less than that outside on a sunny day.
D.People’s bodies produce something called Vitamin D from sunlight.
34.How could Jack solve his problem if he were a person with SAD?
A.By staying indoors a lot. B.By taking in more fresh air.
C.By using man-made lights. D.By doing some exercise.
35.Why is the sentence “Why do we love sunshine?” written in the last paragraph?

26.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.The writer seldom uses WeChat and Alipay in China.
B.People usually have culture shock when living in other countries.
C.Using mobile payment is a common thing in China.
D.The writer’s old friends probably think using cash is a fresh thing.
27.Why did the writer have culture shock in the UK?

B.Because the life there wasn’t as convenient as that in China.

A.To encourage readers to learn more about sunlight.

Dear Alice,
I am glad to know that you are coming to China as an exchange student next month. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Alice,
I am glad to know that you are coming to China as an exchange student next month. To help you adapt smoothly, I’d like to share some cultural differences between China and the West.
Firstly, in China, people often use chopsticks instead of forks and knives. Meals are usually shared with others, so don’t be surprised if everyone eats from the same dishes. Secondly, English relies on word order while Chinese depends on tones. It would be helpful if you try to learn some basic phrases like “nihao” and “xiexie”. Thirdly, the schools here care about a tidy look. Students usually wear school uniforms. Maybe having dyed hair or wearing too fancy accessories isn’t allowed. My advice? Try local foods bravely, practice simple Chinese daily, and follow school dress codes. Don’t worry—everyone is friendly!
I’m sure you’ll love your time here. See you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
