Because of this, scientists are working to use the latest technological advances to predict when and where disasters will happen. They are also studying how best to analyze and communicate this information once it is obtained. On September 29,1998, Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi, Mississippi, after damaging Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly with heavy rains and winds up to 160 km per hour. Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast of the United States, although hundreds died in the Caribbean. This was a very different result, when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an unexpected direct hit on Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people. Vastly improved hurricane warnings explain the different circumstances at the end of the 20th century—residents of Galveston had no advance warning that a storm was approaching, while residents of Biloxi had been warned days in advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions(预防). At the same time that people in Biloxi were thankful for the advance warning, some residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were less satisfied. A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were predicting that the hurricane had a good chance of striking New Orleans.Emergency management officials must begin evacuations(疏散) well before a storm strikes. But evacuation costs money. The mayor of New Orleans estimated that his city’s preparations for Georges cost more than $50 million. After Georges missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the hurricane forecasts in the face of such high costs. The different views on the early warnings of Hurricane Georges show some of the complexities(复杂) related to predicting disasters. Disaster prediction is a process of providing scientific information for the government officials and other decision-makers who must respond to those predictions. 1. What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage? A. To find out the cause of disasters. B. To save people’s lives. C. To prevent natural disasters from happening. D. To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction. 2. Which of the following areas suffered the most severe damage? A. Puerto Rico. B. New Orleans. C. Biloxi, Mississippi. D. Galveston, Texas. 3. The city residents of New Orleans were unsatisfied because . A. their preparations were made in vain B. the hurricane warning arrived rather late C. the forecast hurricane did not hit the city D. they suffered from a heavy hurricane attack 4. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The different ways of disaster prediction. B. Technological advances in disaster prediction. C. The benefits and preparations of disaster prediction. D. The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction. B Stages of Hurricane: Simple Storms Grow Into Giants A storm progresses through four different stages before it is actually considered a hurricane.First is a tropical disturbance(热带扰动), which has thunderstorms and rotating(旋转) winds.Next is a tropical depression(热带低气压), which is similar to a tropical disturbance, but has winds between 23 and 39 miles per hour.A tropical storm is the next level, which has stronger wind speeds between 40 and 73 miles per hour.Once winds reach 74 miles per hour the storm is officially called a hurricane. The wind picks up energy from the warm surface of ocean water. As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength. This is because it is no longer over the warm ocean water that it needs for energy. At this point, a hurricane can still cause a lot of damage because of high winds, rain, and flooding. But unless it makes its way back over the open ocean, it is downgraded from a hurricane back to a tropical storm. What’s Your Name, Hurricane? Hurricanes and tropical storms are given names to help people recognize them.Scientists refer to hurricanes and storms by name as they track them across the ocean. Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names. From 1953 through 1978, hurricanes were only given female names, like Isabel, Camille, Claudette, and Wilma.Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men.Today, the names alternate male and female, and they are named in order of letters. For example, in 2010, storms were named as follows: Alex (male), Bonnie (female), Colin (male), Danielle (female), Earl (male) and so on ... There are six different lists of names that change, so the same names are used every six years. The only way that a new name is added is when a hurricane has been particularly deadly or costly and the name is retired, then replaced with a new one. 5. What happens when a hurricane crosses over land? A. It breaks apart and forms tornadoes. B. It returns to the ocean afterwards. C. It moves more quickly. D. It becomes less powerful. 6. The underlined word “alternate” in Paragraph 4 means “ ”. A. take turns between B. carry on C. come from D. cause trouble to 7. What do we know about the hurricanes? A. Six common hurricane names are often used. B. An old name will be replaced every year. C. Most of them are deadly and costly. D. They didn’t have official names until 1953. Jane’s mother was busy with her work on the farm every day to make ends meet while Jane was studying at school, so they had little time to enjoy themselves. One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible. Neighbours called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the fire- fighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire. Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night. An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up. A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing(教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child's advantage to live with them. Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.” Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor. “Does anyone else want to speak?” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain. When he got to the front of the hall, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When asked her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 7 / 7 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 课时作业03 Integrated skills (Unit 2 Natural disasters) 01 基础练 02 提升练 03 培优练 单词拼写 1. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段第一句“As a hurricane crosses over land, it begins to become weaker or break apart and reduce in strength.(当飓风穿过陆地时,它开始变弱或分裂,强度下降)”可知,当飓风越过陆地时,它开始变得不那么强大。故选D项。 6. 根据第五段“Beginning in 1979, hurricanes were given the names of both women and men.(从1979年开始,飓风被赋予了女性和男性的名字。)” 故选A。 7. 根据第四段第一句“Before 1953, hurricanes were not given official names.(1953年以前,飓风没有正式的名称)。” Jane’s mother was busy with her work on the farm every day to make ends meet while Jane was studying at school, so they had little time to enjoy themselves. 根据空前“she realized Jane was unhappy”可知,Jane心情不好,而even一词表示递进,说明Jane对母亲的态度也不友好。故选A项。 2. A. skating溜冰;B. dancing跳舞;C. hiking徒步旅行;D. skiing滑雪。根据第四段中“Then they went skiing in their white clothes.” A. all全部都(指三者或三者以上);B. both(两者)都;C. either(两者中)任何一个;D. every每一个。 A. searched搜索;B. examined检查;C. found找到;D. caught抓到。 A. pay支付;B. manage管理;C. afford付得起;D. stand忍受,站立。第一段中“Jane's mother was busy with her work on the farm every day to make ends meet(Jane的母亲每天忙于农场里的工作,勉强维持收支相抵)”表明,Jane的母亲经济不富裕,因此这里她们拒绝的原因应该是支付不起、买不起滑雪服。故选C项。 6. A. change改变;B. melt融化;C. jump跳跃;D. shake摇晃。根据空后句“It was an avalanche(雪崩).” A. passed通过;B. escaped逃脱;C. experienced经历;D. overcame克服。根据空前“They ran a long way”和空后转折的句子“but they couldn't find their way.” A. so因此;B. but但是;C. since自从,因为;D. while当……时。空前句“a helicopter was flying above”和空后句“people on it couldn't see or hear them.” A. in vain徒劳地;B. in danger处于危险;C. in peace和平地;D. in ruins成为废墟。根据空后“because she had hurt her head seriously”可知,Jane的头部严重受伤,她的情况应该比较危险。故选B项。 10. A. blood血;B. hair头发;C. tears眼泪;D. jewels珠宝。 故选A项。 11. A. cried哭泣;B. died死去;C. survived存活,活下来;D. woke醒来。 A. find out查明;B. think of认为,想到;C. suffer from遭受;D. come across偶遇。 A. satisfied满意的;B. curious好奇的;C. anxious焦急的;D. painful痛苦的。 A. admire钦佩,赞赏;B. envy嫉妒;C. reward报答;D. thank感谢。 故选A项。 Dear Mr. Peter, ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【答案】 Dear Mr. Peter,   I’m writing on behalf of our class to invite you to our “Disaster Preparedness Knowledge Sharing Session.” The event will be held next Friday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in Class 3, Grade 11.   The purpose is to share practical knowledge about responding to natural disasters and emergencies, and to raise our classmates’ safety awareness. (运用了if引导条件状语从句) 读后续写(灾害防范) A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 When he got to the front of the hall, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. His hands and arms were terribly scarred. The little girl cried out, “This is the man who rescued me!” With a leap, she threw her arms around the man's neck. She buried her face in his shoulder and sobbed for a few moments. Then she looked up and smiled, stating happily she would live with him. When asked her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. She said in a low but determined voice, “I really desire to get a good education that will give me chances to live my dreams. Besides,I know that money means a lot to me since I have no relatives to rely on. But it's the man who saved my life when I was desperately facing a fire like that. Without him, I wouldn't be here, waiting for a new choice. I hope that I can do whatever I can to pay back his kindness.” 词汇激活(一个词汇要写出相近的表达) 行为类 到达:got to/reach/arrive at 另外,此外:besides/in addition/furthermore 情绪类 高兴地:happily/be happy/be delighted 绝望地:desperately/in despair/hopelessly 【点睛】 [高分句型1]Then she looked up and smiled, stating happily she would live with him.
