Future in the Past Objective: Learn how to describe future actions from a past perspective using the Future in the Past tense structures. The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. The author: Born William Sydney Porter in 1862. O. Henry and the Art of the Surprise Ending The style: Famous for short stories defined by twists, surprising conclusions, irony, and humor. The heart: Deep empathy for the everyday lives of common people. What does the word sacrifice mean to you? Can you think of a time when someone gave up something important for someone else? The premise: Della and Jim are a young couple deeply in love but with little money. The choice: Della decides to sell her most valuable possession. Jim also sacrifices something of great personal value. The conflict: They both want to buy each other’s special Christmas gift, but cannot afford anything expensive. Hint: What do you think might happen when the two give up something valuable for each other? What could these sacrifices reveal? A Tale of Love and Sacrifice A Exploring the rules Below is a story about how Della prepared a gift for her husband Jim during the Christmas season. Find the sentences that use future in the past and fill in the box below. The first one has been done for you. 1. When did this story happen? The day before Christmas. 2. What gift did Della prepare for her husband? A simple but beautiful watch chain for his gold watch. The next day would be Christmas. If she was to buy a nice gift...she would need more money. ...She was going to sell her hair. ...She would buy Jim a perfect gift. Would Jim still think she was pretty? She was about to find out. The past perspective The imagined future Spotting the grammatical pattern Look closely at the verbs. These sentences describe future actions. However, they are imagined, expected, planned from a past point of view. Group reflection: How is the future shown using past tense structures? Can you think of times you do this in your own life? Working out the rules Tomorrow would be Christmas. We use the Future in the Past to describe an action in the future from the perspective of a past time. She was going to sell her hair. Four ways to build the Future in the Past Structure 1: would+verb (e.g. would need) Structure 2: was/were going to+verb (e.g. was going to sell) Structure 3: was/were about to+verb (e.g. was about to find out) Structure 4: was/were to +verb (e.g. was to buy ) Would +Verb 表意愿,习惯,预见,即将到来的事实。 Tomorrow would be Christmas. She knew he would love the gift. Was/Were to +verb 计划、安排、命中注定。 They were to be together. She was to buy a nice gift. Differences Was/Were going to +verb 意图、打算、迹象。 She was going to sell her hair. It was going to rain. Was/Were about to +verb 正要、马上就要做某事。 不与具体的时间连用。 She was about to find out. I was about to leave when the phone rang. Differences B Applying the rules Fill in the blanks. Christmas ____________(arrive) the next day, and Della had only $1.87. She _________________(buy) Jim a platinum watch chain, but she didn’t have enough money. She stood before the mirror and ______________(cry), but then a sudden idea flashed in her mind. She knew that her beautiful hair ___________(fetch) a good price at the shop. The sacrifice ______________(make) if she wanted to show her deep love for Jim. She ________________(cut) her hair when she took one last look at its rippling reflection. She wondered if Jim ______ still______ (think) she was beautiful without her long hair. When Jim came home, he realized the combs he _______________(give) her were no longer useful. would arrive was going to buy was about to cry would fetch was to be made was about to cut would think was going to give 1. She thought she will sell her hair. 2. He said he is going to buy the gift. 3. Della would cry when she suddenly saw the reflection of her hair. 4. Complete the conversations with the correct expressions in the brackets. visited was going to see are going to hand in haven’t started would work on was about to start came Below is a story about Jim's gift for Della. Complete the story with the correct verbs in the box below, using future in the past. Some verbs can be used more than once. would be was going to make/ would make would sell/ was going to sell would be/ were going to be was going to think/ would think Creative Task: Write Your Own Ending The Task: Write an ending to The Gift of the Magi using the Future in the Past tense. Guiding questions: Think about what Jim and Della might do after they discover the results of their sacrifices. Constraint: You must use phrases like would be and was going to in your response. Della arrived home and admired Jim's watch chain. She could not wait to see how Jim would react when he saw it the next momning. What was she going to say about her hair, though? She had to think of something. Just then, Jim opened the front door."Oh!" said Della in surprise, trying to hide the chain."I didn't think you were going to be back so soon. I was about to take a shower." She tried to get away to the bathroom. "What's that?" asked Jim. He came closer. "My word! And what on earth have you done to your hair?" "I was going to wait until tomorrow to give this to you, but you've seen it now," Della said. "I sold my hair to buy you a new chain for your watch." Jim looked at her with a loving smile, but there was also sadness in his eyes."What's wrong?" asked Della. "I thought I would surprise you for Christmas too," said Jim. "So I sold my watch to get you these." He held out the combs. Della was speechless. She smiled back at Jim, and they held each other for a long time. Although their gifts had not worked out as planned, they were to be together happily for Christmas, and that was all that mattered. Taking the Grammar Off the Page 1. Write 5 original sentences about your own life using the Future in the Past. 2. Draft your short ending to The Gift of the Magi (60-80 words) applying what you've learned. $
