Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations(强度计算) for the predicted earthquakes. The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI algorithm was provided with a set of statistical(统计的) features based on the team's knowledge of earthquake physics, and then ordered to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI algorithm provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes among the background sound of the Earth. This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don't see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network and Seismology Research(TexNet). “It's a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that's a huge result which could help reduce economic and human losses and has the capability to notably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.” While it is unknown whether the same approach will work in other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with trustworthy earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since TexNet has 300 earthquake stations and over six years' worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes. Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based patterns. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what move science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, a geologist and energy expert. 1.How does the AI algorithm predict earthquakes? A.By identifying data from outer space. B.By analyzing background sounds of the Earth. C.By modeling data based on earthquake recordings. D.By measuring changes in the database of earthquake recordings. 2.What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3? A.The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes. B.The importance of preparing for earthquakes. C.The significance of developing the AI prediction. D.The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction. 3.What does the follow-up research focus on? A.Conducting tests in different locations. B.Applying the AI approach to other fields. C.Building more earthquake stations in Texas. D.Enlarging the database to train the AI algorithm. 4.Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology? A.Dependable but outdated. B.Effective but costly. C.Capable and affordable. D.Advanced and promising. Ⅱ.七选五 (2024湖南郴州九校联盟期中) Lightning can strike anywhere on Earth. In fact, there are about 6,000 lightning strikes every minute. The risk of being struck by lightning is low, but the consequences of lightning-strike injuries are serious. Even though your home is a safe shelter during a lightning storm, you might still be at risk. About one-third of lightning-strike injuries occur indoors. 1     Avoid water. Do NOT bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm. 2      3     Do NOT use anything connected to an electrical outlet(电源插座), such as computers, game consoles, washers, or stoves. Lightning can travel through electrical systems, radio and television reception systems. Avoid windows, doors, porches, and concrete. 4 Do NOT lie on concrete floors or lean on concrete walls during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through any metal wire or bar in concrete walls or flooring.    Don't use corded(有线的) phones. Corded phones are NOT safe to use during a thunderstorm. Do NOT use them. 5     Following the safety measures above can minimize your risk of being injured indoors on lightning days. Don't take it for granted that only outdoor activities can put you in a dangerous place. Keep it in mind that inappropriate indoor activities can also be disastrous. A.Here are some tips to keep safe and reduce your risk of being struck while indoors. B.In addition, follow up on the latest information about the storm. C.However, it is safe to use cordless or mobile phones during a storm. D.Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches. E.Some outdoor measures can keep you safe and prevent you from being attacked. F.Lightning can travel through a building's water pipe system. G.Don't touch electrical equipment. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.      Ⅲ.完形填空 (2025安徽皖南八校期中) On February 17 at 12:11 p.m., Bob and his friend were driving snowmobiles in the Shrine Bowl area. 1 , they accidentally caused an avalanche(雪崩), and Bob was completely buried.
