Lesson Objectives:
In this lesson, we will be able to:
1. Master key vocabulary: unit, persuade, inform, entertain, resource,
frog, toolmaker... Understand and use context clues to infer word
meanings.
2. Identify author’s purpose (persuade/inform/entertain) and make
inferences using text clues + background knowledge. Apply
sequencing skills to understand how credit began.
3. Connect reading content to real-life financial decisions. Develop
critical thinking about wise spending and saving.

Writers write for a purpose. It is mainly to persuade,
to inform or to entertain.

In ancient times, when people began to trade things, there was a need for borrowing and lending. Take the trade between Kron the hunter and Nokk the toolmaker as an example. Kron wanted Nokk’s tools for hunting, but he had nothing to trade with Nokk, so he promised to trade the animals from his future hunts for Nokk’s tools. Nokk needed animals for food, so he agreed.
