A great cultural event took place in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province. The English-language The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭) by Tang Xianzu was performed (表演) in China for the first time. At the same time, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Dream of Nanke were also performed. These plays created a dialogue across time and space and showed the shared human feelings of Tang Xianzu and William Shakespeare (莎士比亚).
Tang Xianzu from China and William Shakespeare from England were great writers during the mid-16th century. Though they never met, their works share many similarities. Their works were about themes like love, life and human spirits, and often used “dreams” in plays to express feelings that still touch people today. This idea was shown clearly at a gala held by CCTV in Fuzhou.
In the drama Tang & Shakespeare, The Peony Pavilion and Romeo and Juliet appeared on the same stage. The performance showed Eastern “pure love” and Western “devoted love”, proving that writers from different cultures can express similar feelings about love and life.
The English-language The Peony Pavilion was successful in bringing Eastern and Western cultures together. However, it also faced a challenge: how to make the special singing and music of Kunqu opera easy to understand for English people? To solve this problem, the actors used rhythms (韵律) often found in Shakespeare’s plays and mixed Western and Chinese styles in movement, dance and music. With actors from different countries, the performance became a real cultural exchange, not just a translation.
Another exciting part of the event was the “Tang-Shakespeare Legacy: Youth Dialogue”, which brought together young actors from China and the UK. These young artists not only keep traditions alive, but also bring new ideas to classic works. Their work proves that cultural differences are bridges, not barriers (障碍). As we witness the exchange, we are reminded that the influence of Tang and Shakespeare is not limited to their time but lives on in every play, every shared story, and every heart it touches.
34.What do we know about Tang and Shakespeare according to the passage?
A.They worked together to write plays. B.They were writers in different periods.
C.They wrote plays in the same country. D.They used dreams to express feelings.
35.How did the performers help English speakers enjoy The Peony Pavilion?
A.By inviting many famous international actors. B.By changing the old story into a modern one.
C.By using Western rhythms and mixing art styles. D.By explaining the play before each performance.
36.Why are young artists important in this cultural event?
A.They help make the performance shorter. B.They bring new life to traditional works.
C.They follow old traditions without change. D.They decide which plays to be performed.
37.Which idea is best supported by the passage as a whole?
A.Chinese artists play an important role in this cultural event.
B.Traditional art should be protected without making changes.
C.Cultural differences lead to misunderstandings without dialogue.
D.Cultural exchange helps classical works connect different cultures.

The average person eats about 40 kg of meat per year. In developed countries, it’s double that—about the same weight as an adult dolphin. But experts now advise cutting down the amount of meat we eat to help slow down the warming of the Earth. So, here’s a thought experiment: what if the whole world turned vegan (eating no animal products at all)? Around 15% of all greenhouse gases produced by humans come from raising farm animals. If we all become vegan, these gases will be slashed.
Eating meat takes up space—a lot of it. Around 80% of all farmland is used for producing meat and milk products. This area is almost as large as Europe, the United States, China, and Australia put together. Meat and milk usually give us only 18% of the energy we need, but they cause 60% of the harmful gases from farming. A report by the UN’s climate body, the IPCC, recommends we all reduce the amount of meat we eat, and also how much we waste. The report has found that 8%—10% of the world’s harmful gases come from lost or wasted food.
▲ Large-scale (大规模) farming of cows causes especially serious harm and has been a big factor in the loss of the Amazon Rainforest. When cows digest (消化) their food, they produce methane (CH4)—a powerful greenhouse gas that is about 28 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2) over 100 years. One cow lets out between 70 and 100 kg of methane every year, and there are around 1.5 billion cows in the world today. But small-scale farming of animals can have a lower environmental footprint, and sometimes—as with traditional grazing (放牧)—can even help wildlife and plants live together.
Vegan alternatives (替代) also come with their own problems. For example, large-scale bean production can cause forests to be cut down, and almond (杏仁) production requires huge amounts of water. If everyone changed to a plant-based diet, it could bring important health benefits. One study guessed that if everyone ate a vegan diet—rich in fresh fruit and vegetables—around eight million deaths could be avoided worldwide by 2050. There are no simple answers.
If everyone changes how they view food, produce it, and eat it in a green way, we might change the world.
38.What does “be slashed” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Double. B.Remain. C.Reduce greatly. D.Increase slightly.
39.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Raising cows especially harms the Earth. B.A vegan world would end food waste.
C.Small farms are more harmful to the Earth. D.Bean production needs plenty of water.
40.Which of the following is the most suitable for ▲ ?
A.Raising sheep also harms the Earth. B.Many countries begin raising fewer cows.
C.People must stop eating beef at once. D.Not all farming influences the Earth equally.
41.This passage is mainly about ________.
A.why cows mainly cause the warming of the Earth
B.why we should stop eating meat to protect the Earth
C.how eating meat harms the Earth and what we can do
D.what the advantages of eating fruits and vegetables are

The Chinese old saying “good medicine tastes bitter” may no longer hold in the country where it was born and believed.
Xi Linjie, a 20-year-old college student, sought help for tiredness at a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital in Chongqing and was pleasantly surprised by a cup of sweet milk tea. “The milk tea is filled with TCM ingredients, yet it tastes delightful. It’s less sweet than regular milk tea and has a slight herbal fragrance.” she says, “Most importantly, it’s beneficial to health.”
This new milk tea is invented by the nutrition department of Chongqing Jiangbei Hospital of TCM. Since 2023, the hospital has mixed TCM processing techniques with contemporary food production to attract younger generation. “Milk tea is a favorite among young people. We hope it can act as a bridge for them to gain more knowledge about TCM and gradually accept it,” says Liao Changying, director of the hospital’s nutrition department. She notes that almost everyone who tried the milk tea shared the special experience with their family and friends.
The hospital has employed various modern technologies to maximize the effect of TCM while improving the taste. “Behind the TCM milk tea are numerous experiments and improvements. It represents the integration of TCM, modern medicine, nutrition and more. Our goal is to help people prevent and manage diseases while enjoying delicious food and drinks,” Liao explains. The TCM milk tea proves how traditional medicine is appealing to the younger generation in an approachable manner.
Liao is pleased to see many young visitors seeking professional health advice on physical conditioning. “Over half of the visitors are young people interested in health consultations for body conditioning, which indicates that the younger generation has confidence in TCM,” Liao says. She also suggested that more efforts should be made to integrate TCM with other fields that interest young people, adding, “TCM is becoming a new trend among the youth”.
42.According to Xi Linjie, what makes the new milk tea so special?
A.Its health effect. B.Its bitter taste. C.Its special milk. D.Its strong fragrance.
43.From Liao’s angle, what does she expect the new milk tea to function?
A.To attract the younger generation to study TCM.
B.To help the young develop a deeper understanding of TCM.
C.To improve modern production techniques of TCM.
D.To provide a special drinking experience with TCM.
44.What does Liao want to stress in Paragraph 4?
A.The marketing strategy for promoting the milk tea. B.The process of making the new milk tea.
C.The scientific efforts behind the TCM milk tea. D.The popularity of the TCM milk tea.

A report by the charity Cancer Research UK has studied the development of preventing, detecting (发现) and treating cancer over the last 50 years. The results are very positive.
Cancer is a broad term for a collection of diseases that are caused by oddly (异常的) behaving cells growing out of control. It affects one in two people at some time in their life. The report, Cancer in the UK, looks at how the disease has been diagnosed (诊断) (identified) and treated, using data from 1973 to 2023.
The report states that the proportion (比例) of people in Britain (not including Northern Ireland) diagnosed with cancer has increased by almost half (47%). Early diagnosis can lead to earlier and more effective treatment. Half of people who are diagnosed with cancer today will live for at least 10 years, compared with a quarter of people in the early 1970s. Cancer Research UK’s director of research, Dr Catherine Elliott, said the studies send a message of hope to people affected by the disease.
Early diagnosis and new combinations of medicines have helped more people survive cancer, and specific blood tests have guided the treatment to make it as effective as possible.
As well as developing better treatments, experts are finding new ways to prevent cancer. A recent trial, with results published on 1 June, found that exercise can prevent early death from colon cancer and improve survival rates in the years after recovery (恢复). Colon cancer is a form of bowel cancer, the fourth most common type of cancer in the UK.
However, the report says there is still a lot to do. There are 1,900 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year with cancer, but it is very rare — less than 1% of the total in the UK. In fact, more than three quarters of people with cancer in the UK are aged over 60. On top of that, the population in the UK is ageing because they generally live longer than people did 50 years ago. More older people means more people with cancer.
The UK Government is working on a National Cancer Plan for England. The plan will cover ways to prevent cancer and provide better support for those who have had the disease.
