Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, is a nurse who works at nursing homes in Harrison, and Kate often follows her around in the summer. Last May, Ruby Kate learned a resident( 居民) named Pearl felt so sad for she had to send her dog away. The reason was that the nursing home didn’t allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after hers. She also learned that many nursing home residents were unable to afford even the smallest luxuries (奢侈品). So Kate decided to do something about it. She started by asking residents what three things they wanted most in the world. Amanda worried that people would ask for cars and other things an 11-year-old wouldn’t be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, pants that fit properly, and even just a prayer. “It broke me as a human, “Amanda says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many items as we could.” Using their own money, the Chitseys satisfied the wishes of about 100 people in three months. Then they started asking for donations. The good people of Harrison responded enthusiastically, so much so that Amanda set up a GoFundMe page, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents, hoping to collect $5,000. They hit their goal in only a few days. After GoFundMe promoted Kate’s story internationally this January, Three Wishes raised $20,000 in 24 hours and more than $250,000 in five months. Earlier this year, Three Wishes became a nonprofit and started its first nationwide chapters. 1. Why was Pearl unhappy? A. Because she became terribly ill. B. Because she couldn’t afford luxuries. C. Because keeping dogs was forbidden. D. Because no one looked after her dog. 2. What do we learn about Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents? A. It started raising money in nursing homes. B. It got great support from the people of Harrison. C. It has developed branches in each state of America. D. It only received donations of money on the Internet. 3. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To popularize the Chitseys’ Three Wishes. B To advertise the nursing homes in Harrison. C. To introduce how the Chitseys helped the residents. D. To encourage people to donate for Harrison’s residents. 【答案】1. C 2. B 3. C 【解析】 【分析】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要描述了鲁比•凯特帮助养老院的居民实现他们的愿望,得到了许多同样好心的人的支持的故事。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。由第二段Pearl felt so sad for she had to send her dog away. The reason was that the nursing home didn’t allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after hers.可知Pearl感到很难过,因为她必须送走她的狗。原因是疗养院不允许居民养狗,而Pearl没有钱请人照顾她的狗。所以Pearl不开心是因为养狗是被禁止的。故选C。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。由倒数第二段they started asking for donations. The good people of Harrison responded enthusiastically,可知他们募捐的时候,Harrison积极响应。所以Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents这个项目得到了Harrison的支持。故选B。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。文章是关于Chitsey看到疗养院的人们需要帮助之后,建立了GoFundMe page,以满足居民的三个愿望,并募捐的事情。所以文章的目的是介绍Chitsey怎样帮助居民的。故选C。 At first, I didn’t recognize the symptoms that we all had in common. Friends mentioned that they were having trouble concentrating. It wasn’t burnout — we still had energy. It wasn’t depression — we didn’t feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless. It turns out there’s a name for that: languishing. Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling (应付) through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. In psychology, we think about mental health on a spectrum (范围) from depression to flourishing. Flourishing is the peak of well-being. Depression is the valley of ill-being. Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It’s the emptiness between depression and flourishing – the absence of well-being. You’re not functioning at full capacity. Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you’ll cut back on work. Part of the danger is that when you’re languishing, you might not notice the lessening of delight or the decreasing of drive. You don’t catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you’re indifferent to your indifference. When you can’t see your own suffering, you don’t seek help or even do much to help yourself. So what can we do about it? People who became more focused on their work managed to avoid languishing. Interrupted attention is an enemy of engagement and excellence. To go beyond languishing, give yourself some uninterrupted time. It clears out constant distractions and gives us the freedom to focus. And try starting with small wins by focusing on a challenge that matters to you – an interesting project, a worthwhile goal, or a meaningful conversation. We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step. It could help to defog our vision, giving us a clearer window into what had been an unclear experience. It could remind us that we weren’t alone: languishing is common and shared. By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the emptiness. 4. According to the passage, which definition best suits the word “languishing”? A. Staying in one’s comfort zone. B. Having a vague view of one’s future. C. Becoming weaker or failing to improve. D. Feeling exhausted and without hope. 5. For those who are languishing, they are likely to ________. A. seek help when they feel they’re suffering B. deny that they cannot work at full capacity C. give themselves some uninterrupted time D. be indifferent to their lack of enthusiasm 6. Which of the following is a potential solution to languishing? A. Removing it from the spectrum of mental health. B. Recognizing the reduction of delight and motivation. C. Improving attention span and eliminating distraction. D. Having a clearer idea about its cause and effect. 7. Why is it significant to know that languishing is common and shared? A. We can continue to learn more about languishing. B. We can let the silent despair speak up and find a way out. C. We can see it as basically the same as depression. D. We can study it as the complete opposite of flourishing. 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. C 7. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一种萎靡不振的精神状态——languishing,以及可以做些什么去改变这种精神状态。 【4题详解】 词句猜测题。通过文章第三段“Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. (Languishing是一种无所作为和空虚的感觉)”以及第五段“you might not notice the dulling of delight or the decreasing of drive (你可能没有注意到愉悦感的减弱或干劲的减少)”和“you don’t seek help or even do much to help yourself (你不寻求帮助,甚至不做很多事来帮助自己)”可推知,C项“变弱或不上进”最适合定义“languishing”。故选C项。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。通过文章第五段“You don’t catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you’re indifferent to your indifference. (你不会发现自己慢慢陷入孤独;你对自己的冷漠毫不关心)”可推知,对自己缺乏热情,漠不关心就可以被描述为languishing。故选D项。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第四段“Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you’ll cut back on work.(languishing会削弱你的动力,扰乱你的专注能力,大大增加你减少工作的可能性)”可知,我们应改善提高专注力,减少分心来解决languishing。故选C项。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。通过文章最后一段“By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the emptiness. (通过了解我们中的许多人都患有languishing,我们就能开始说出内心的平静的绝望,照亮并走出空虚的道路)”可知,知道languishing是普遍的和共同的是重要的,这样我们就可以将沉默的绝望大声说出来,并找到出路。故选B项。 As more and more books become movie adaptations, I can’t help but think how this will affect English classes in America. Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago, I would be rewarded if I read a number of classics. Today, a majority of those books are also rearranged into movies: Life of Pi, The Great Gatsby, Much Ado About Nothing and Anna Karenina, to name but a few. Even modern books such as The Hunger Games and Harry Potter have been adapted for the big screen. In discussion with my students, I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon, which makes me wonder what effect movie adaptations have on modern-day students. Will the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) encourage them to read books more carefully or to use movies to improve their understanding of the text? The CCSS require students to provide text-based evidence when they are reading and discussing a book. By focusing on such evidence, teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have been cut when the book was adapted for the big screen. For instance, after reading and watching The Hunger Games — there were a number of details from the book that were missing from the movie — many people were disappointed with Rue’s meek (温顺的) movie role. A student who failed to read The Hunger Games would not quite understand Rue’s impact on the games in the same way as someone who had read the book and remembered all the details about her death. I am not saying the CCSS will stop students from cutting corners, but I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provide, it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deeply into texts and not just pressing the play button. 8. Ten years ago, what did students in America do? A. They were fond of reading all kinds of novels. B. They were forbidden to discuss movies in class. C. They were not allowed to watch movies in the cinema. D. They were encouraged to read many literature works. 9. How can movie adaptations affect modern-day students? A. They spend less time in studying. B. They can’t understand English texts. C. They spend less time in reading. D. They discuss movies more frequently. 10. What can we learn from the third paragraph? A. The Hunger Games is the worst movie adaptation. B. It is a waste of time reading and discussing a book in class. C. Movie adaptations may bring trouble in understanding the books. D. Rue’s impact on the games is perfectly presented in the movie. 11. According to the text, what can we know about the CCSS? A. They may prevent students watching movies. B. They may provide students with well-known movies. C. They may encourage students to write novels. D. They may provide guidance on teaching and learning. 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. C 11. D 【解析】 【导语】本文的体裁是说明文。本文主要介绍越来越多的书籍被改编成电影对美国学生阅读习惯的影响,以及CCSS在其中的作用。 【8题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Thinking back to my years in middle and high school—ten years ago, I would be rewarded if I read a number of classics. (回想我在初中和高中的岁月——十年前,如果我读了一些经典作品,我就会得到奖励。)”可知,十年前,美国的学生被鼓励阅读许多文学作品。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“In discussion with my students, I often hear them say they are not going to read books because movies will come out soon, which makes me wonder what effect movie adaptations have on modern-day students. (在与学生的讨论中,我经常听到他们说他们不打算读书了,因为电影即将上映,这让我想知道电影改编对现代学生有什么影响。)”可知,现代学生因为电影即将上映而减少了阅读时间。故选C。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“By focusing on such evidence, teachers can pull specific details from a book that may have been cut when the book was adapted for the big screen. 根据最后一段“I am not saying the CCSS will stop students from cutting corners, but I believe if teachers use the support the CCSS provide, it can be a great roadway to ensure all students are digging deeply into texts and not just pressing the play button. (我并不是说CCSS会阻止学生走捷径,但我相信如果老师们利用CCSS提供的支持,它可以成为一个很好的途径,以确保所有的学生都深入挖掘文本,而不仅仅是按下播放按钮。)”可知,CCSS为教学和学习提供了指导。故选D。 When it comes to human resources, hiring highly-skilled staff is not usually enough for a company to function successfully. Besides the knowledge in their particular fields, employees must always have additional skills — those of co-operation. In the case that work tasks can only be carried out by communicating with people, accepting common decisions, solving problems, sharing information and helping one another, teamwork skills are important. While some jobs may require talent, the ability to work as a team is learned. There are no complicated formulas (规则); you don't need to have any special qualities or exceptional mental abilities. Individuals can be effective as a team if they have developed certain behaviors or habits of communication. Many companies, clubs and organizations use team building activities. Team building activities may include a number of teamwork elements. They are aimed at encouraging active participation in task accomplishment while all members have their roles as individuals and are able to co-operate towards a common goal as a team. Many team building activities focus on problem solving and discussing team issues; thus argument as a way to common consensus (共识) is encouraged. Team building activities often involve recognition and identification of team member skills, talents, knowledge, and experiences which allow the team members to learn more about each other and fully utilize (利用) those skills where appropriate (合适的). Many team activities are focused on developing keys to trust during challenging times. 12. In the author’s opinion, which of the following is important for a company to be successful? A. Specialized knowledge. B. Highly-skilled staff. C. Exceptional talent. D. Teamwork skills. 13. According to the second paragraph, co-operation skills______. A. require special qualities and abilities B. are learned while working in a team C. need exceptional mental abilities D. are quite complicated to learn 14. Team building activities are good for______. A. hiring employees with special talent B. encouraging employees to co-operate C. helping employees work independently D. training employees in their special fields 15 What is the best title of the passage? A. Team Building B. Problem Solving C. Communication Skills D. Company Management 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍团队合作技能对公司成功的重要性,以及团队合作技能可通过后天学习,还有团队建设活动的作用。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Besides the knowledge in their particular fields, employees must always have additional skills — those of co-operation. In the case that work tasks can only be carried out by communicating with people, accepting common decisions, solving problems, sharing information and helping one another, teamwork skills are important.(除了各自领域的知识外,员工还必须具备额外的技能——合作技能。在工作任务只能通过与人沟通、接受共同决定、解决问题、分享信息和互相帮助来完成的情况下,团队合作技能至关重要)”可知,作者认为团队合作技能对公司成功很重要。故选D项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“While some jobs may require talent, the ability to work as a team is learned. There are no complicated formulas (规则); you don't need to have any special qualities or exceptional mental abilities.(虽然有些工作可能需要天赋,但团队合作能力是可以学习的。没有复杂的规则;你不需要有任何特殊的素质或非凡的心智能力)”可知,合作技能是在团队工作中学习到的。故选B项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“They are aimed at encouraging active participation in task accomplishment while all members have their roles as individuals and are able to co-operate towards a common goal as a team.(它们旨在鼓励成员积极参与任务完成,同时所有成员都作为个体发挥自己的作用,并能够作为一个团队朝着共同的目标合作)”可知,团队建设活动有助于鼓励员工合作。故选B项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章第一段强调团队合作技能对公司成功的重要性,第二段说明团队合作能力可通过学习获得及团队建设活动的存在,第三段具体介绍团队建设活动的作用,核心围绕“团队合作”和“团队建设”展开,A选项“团队建设”能概括全文主旨,适合作本文标题。故选A项。 First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. Suggest another meeting. If you won’t see them in another setting, ask if you can have another opportunity to let them get to see the real you. ____19____ For example, don’t continue pursuing a potential romantic partner after they have told you they are not interested. Don’t take it personally. Instead, see it as a learning opportunity and try to apply those lessons when you meet someone new. ____20____ If you do get another opportunity to overcome a poor first impression, make sure you are honest and consistent in your future interactions. Let the other person know you completely in terms of context and situation. If it’s a second date, let them see the qualities that make you a great romantic partner, such as warmth, kindness, humour, and attentiveness (周到). A. Let them see the real you. B. Show interest in others. C. Smiling, for example, can help express warmth and interest. D. No matter the cause, an honest explanation may be helpful. E. But there are still things you can do to overcome a bad first impression. F. Then you can improve the impression the other person has of you. G. However, be willing to respect the other person’s request if they decline your offer. 【答案】16. E 17. F 18. D 19. G 20. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要说明了如何克服不好的第一印象,给出了具体的建议和方法。 【16题详解】 空处位于首段段尾,承接上文,引出本文主题,根据前文“First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. It might be more of a challenge to change how you are perceived.(第一印象很重要,但每个人都有不顺心的时候,或者在社交场合犯错的时候。改变别人对你的看法可能更有挑战性)”可知,E项“But there are still things you can do to overcome a bad first impression.(但是你仍然可以做一些事情来克服糟糕的第一印象)”和上文构成转折关系,并引出本文主题,克服糟糕的第一印象。故选E项。 【17题详解】 设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Apologize. If your first meeting was affected by some type of mistake, reach out and apologize. It shows that you are aware of your mistake and willing to take steps to overcome it.(道歉。如果你的第一次会面受到了某种错误的影响,那就主动去道歉。这表明你意识到自己的错误,并愿意采取措施来克服它)”可知,本段讲述主动道歉,改正错误来改变糟糕的第一印象,所以F项“Then you can improve the impression the other person has of you.(然后你可以改善别人对你的印象)”是前文方法的结果,符合文意。故选F项。 【18题详解】 根据前文“Explain what happened. You don’t want to make excuses. But it can be helpful to provide an honest explanation for why your first meeting went poorly. You might explain that you were nervous, that you weren’t feeling well, that you were distracted, or that you were feeling stressed about something unrelated.(解释发生了什么。 If you won’t see them in another setting, ask if you can have another opportunity to let them get to see the real you.(建议另一次会面。如果你不想在其他场合见到他们,那就问他们是否有机会让他们看到真实的你)”以及后文“For example, don’t continue pursuing a potential romantic partner after they have told you they are not interested. Don’t take it personally.(例如,在一个潜在的浪漫伴侣告诉你他们对你不感兴趣之后,不要继续追求他们。不要往心里去)”可知,前文提到请求另一次机会,但是后文举例说如果被拒绝,就不要继续,所以空处应提到这点,所以G项“However, be willing to respect the other person’s request if they decline your offer.(然而,如果对方拒绝你的提议,你要尊重对方的要求)”承接上文,引出下文举例,符合文意。故选G项。 【20题详解】 空处位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“If you do get another opportunity to overcome a poor first impression, make sure you are honest and consistent in your future interactions. Let the other person know you completely in terms of context and situation.(如果你确实得到了另一个机会来克服糟糕的第一印象,确保你在未来的互动中诚实和一致。让对方完全了解你的背景和情况)”可知,本段主要讲述展示真正的自己,所以A项“Let them see the real you.(让他们看到真实的你)”符合本段主题。故选A项。 三、完形填空 At 7:30 am on Christmas Eve, Mary Black got a call from an unknown number. I don’t drive a car. Americans are broad-minded people. They will accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend (瘾君子), a wife beater, and even a newspaperman, but if a man does not drive, there is something wrong with him. Through the years I’ve found it very embarrassing to admit it to anyone and my best friends tend to view me with distrust and disapproval. But where I really run into trouble is when I go into a store and try to make a purchase with a check. It happened again last week when I went to a discount house at a large shopping center in Maryland. I wanted to buy a portable type writer, and the salesman was very helpful about showing me the different models. I decided on one, and then I said, “May I write out a personal check?” “Naturally,” he said kindly. “Do you have any identification?” “Of course,” I said. I produced an American express credit card, a Diner’s club credit card, a Bell telephone credit card, and my pass to the White House. The man inspected them all and then said, “Where’s your driver’s license?” “I don’t have one,” I replied. “Did you lose it?” “No, I didn’t lose it. I don’t drive a car.” He pushed a button under the cash register, and suddenly a floor manager came rushing over. The salesman had now become surly. “This guy’s trying to cash a check, and he doesn’t have a driver’s license. Should I call the store detective?” 注意: 1. 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 “Wait a minute. I’ll talk to him,” the manager said. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By this time the president of the store had arrived on the scene. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “Wait a minute. I’ll talk to him,” the manager said. “Did you lose your driver’s license for some traffic offense?” “No, I’ve never driven. I don’t like to drive. ” “Nobody likes to drive,” the floor manager became impatient in time and shouted. “That’s no excuse. Why are you trying to cash a check if you don’t have a driver’s license?” “I thought all the other identification was good enough, ” I explained, at a total loss to know how to reason with him, who, in turn, was somehow on the edge of losing his mind. By this time the president of the store had arrived on the scene. Fortunately, he recognized my name since I was kind of a famous writer and okayed the check. He was very embarrassed by the treatment I had received. Upon showing me out, he said apologetically, “Come on, I’ll buy you a drink.” “I forgot to tell you, ” I said. “I don’t drink either.” This was too much, even for him, and he pushed me toward the door. “Get out of here,” he said, “and don’t come back!” 1】Why are you trying to cash a check if you don’t have a driver’s license? Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, is a nurse who works at nursing homes in Harrison, and Kate often follows her around in the summer. Last May Ruby Kate learned a resident( 居民) named Pearl felt so sad for she had to send her dog away. D It only received donations of money on the Internet. 3. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text? A. To popularize the Chitseys’ Three Wishes. B. To advertise the nursing homes in Harrison. C. To introduce how the Chitseys helped the residents. D. To encourage people to donate for Harrison’s residents. At first, I didn’t recognize the symptoms that we all had in common. As more and more books become movie adaptations, I can’t help but think how this will affect English classes in America. When it comes to human resources, hiring highly-skilled staff is not usually enough for a company to function successfully. A. hiring employees with special talent B. encouraging employees to co-operate C. helping employees work independently D. training employees in their special fields 15. What is the best title of the passage? A. Team Building B. Problem Solving C. Communication Skills D. Company Management First impressions are important, but everyone has an off day or makes mistakes in social situations. It might be more of a challenge to change how you are perceived. ____16____ Apologize. If your first meeting was affected by some type of mistake, reach out and apologize. It shows that you are aware of your mistake and willing to take steps to overcome it. ____17____ Explain what happened. You don’t want to make excuses. But it can be helpful to provide an honest explanation for why your first meeting went poorly. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
