Jane Goodall was only 26 years old when she first went to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in July 1960.
While researchers understood that humans and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) were closely related, they had no knowledge about the behavior of primates (灵长目动物) in the wild. The first three months were difficult without making any meaningful scientific observations or being able to approach the chimpanzees. But Goodall finally managed to gain the trust of a male with silver hair that she named David Greybeard. In November 1960, she made an observation that would forever change the way the animals were understood. David Greybeard bent a stick and used it as a tool to clean termites (白蚁) in a nest. The ability to use tools was what scientists believed set humans apart from animals.
Goodall’s career track changed after the “Understanding Chimpanzees” conference in Chicago in 1986. Although she helped organize it, the sessions she attended showed her the devastating effects of deforestation of habitats and the inhumane conditions chimpanzees faced in medical research. She told Living on Earth’s Steve Curwood in an interview in 2020 that she had no idea of the extent of the dangers the great chimpanzees faced. “I went as a scientist,” Goodall said. “I left as an activist.” Her conservation efforts started years earlier when she founded the Jane Goodall Institute which devotes a large part of its efforts to wildlife conservation and to continuing the field research in Gombe Stream National Park, according to the press release. But Goodall understood that, if we really wanted to change the world, we must get youth involved. That’s why she started the Roots & Shoots program in 1991, now active in 75 countries, to empower young people to protect the world. In January 2025, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom for her contributions to science and her advocacy for the planet.
Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025. She remained active until just days before her death. Her legacy of research and advocacy will live on.
24. Why did Jane Goodall go to Gombe Stream National Park in 1960?
A. To observe termites. B. To travel with scientists.
C. To do a field study. D. To name a chimpanzee.
25. What does the underlined word “devastating” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Disastrous. B. Beneficial. C. Significant. D. Apparent.
26. Why did Jane Goodall launch the Roots & Shoots program?
A. To establish partnerships for habitat protection.
B To encourage youth participation in conservation.
C. To fund scientific research on chimpanzees’ behaviors.
D. To train young people to become wildlife researchers.
27. What can be inferred about Jane Goodall?
A. Her research methods were doubtful. B. Her efforts were limited to chimpanzees.
C. Her focus was on theoretical contributions. D. Her advocacy work had a global impact.

There is a saying that knowledge is power. However, in reality, knowledge is prevention. It can often seem that natural disasters, such as wildfires, are unpredictable and cannot be prevented, but that may no longer be the case.
A team of Israeli scientists from Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan has recently published a study in Scientific Reports that they have developed a new AI model that is capable of accurately forecasting wildfire outbreaks.
The AI model can predict the location and timing of lightning-induced (雷电引发的) wildfires with 90 percent accuracy. This sort of model could truly be lifesaving, as climate change has heightened the occurrences and dangers of lightning-induced wildfires.
The model outperformed traditional wildfire risk indexes (指数) . In order to create this highly accurate model, the researchers integrated environmental factors, data from weather systems and satellites.
Dr. Oren Glickman, an assistant professor in Bar-Ilan University’s Computer Science Department, said, “Lightning-ignited wildfires are a global challenge, and our model shows it is likely to heighten with climate change. With an improved ability to predict lightning fires, meteorological services, fire departments, and emergency planners can respond earlier and more effectively, potentially saving lives and protecting ecosystems.”
While the first study offered a solution globally, an additional study from Tel Aviv University, introduced an AI model aimed at more local solutions. The purpose of this model is to raise the accuracy of wildfire prediction for specific countries and locations. Basing themselves on the fairly accurate Canadian wildfire index, the researchers improved the index for specific countries through climate-informed adaptation of fire weather variables. But the researchers did not stop there. They then developed country-specific machine learning models which they simplified into decision trees. This method clocked in with an impressive 86 percent accuracy.
Lightning-induced wildfires are global issues, but the weather, geography and local parameters (参数) of every given location also create very distinct and specific wildfire risks. These aspects must be taken into account when looking to make a wildfire prevention system.
28. What can be learned about the AI model developed by Bar-Ilan University?
A. It predicts wildfires very precisely. B. It prevents wildfire occurrence by 90%.
C. It reduces satellite data in fire prevention. D. It focuses entirely on local weather conditions.
29. What is Dr. Glickman’s opinion on AI wildfire prediction?
A. It has effects on climate change. B. It should prioritize fire departments.
C. It keeps ecosystems under control. D. It allows earlier emergency responses.
30. How did Tel Aviv University’s researchers improve the Canadian wildfire index?
A. By introducing climate study methods. B. By avoiding the environmental factors.
C. By simplifying its machine learning models. D. By adapting the weather-based risk factors locally.
31. What needs considering when creating a wildfire prevention system according to the last paragraph?
A. AI models’ application. B. Global and regional factors.
C. Historical disaster data. D. Local and public promotion.

Music plays an important role in human emotion, social relationship, and cultural expression. Why do people enjoy music?
“The answer to this big question has the potential to open a window into more general aspects of the human mind, such as how experiences become pleasurable,” says Giacomo Bignardi, first author of an international team led by scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “We wanted to understand whether genetic (遗传的) differences between individuals can result in differences in the pleasure that people get from music and what these differences can tell us about human musicality in general,” he adds.
To determine whether genetic factors contribute to music enjoyment or music reward sensitivity (敏感度) , the researchers used the twin design, which compares similarities between identical twins and fraternal twins. Put simply, if identical twins are more similar than fraternal twins, genetics should play a role.
In collaboration with the MPI for Empirical Aesthetics in Germany and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, the team was able to use data from more than 9,000 twins, including self-reported music reward and general reward sensitivity, as well as their ability to understand musical features such as melody and rhythm (节奏).
The team found that the ability to experience pleasure from music was partly heritable: using the twin design, the researchers were able to estimate that 54% of the variability in the Swedish sample is associated with DNA differences between individuals. They also found genetic influences on music reward sensitivity to be partly independent of general reward sensitivity and music understanding abilities, and discovered that distinct genetic pathways influenced different aspects of music enjoyment, such as emotion control, dancing along with a beat or playing music with others.
“These findings suggest a complex picture in which partly distinct DNA differences contribute to different aspects of music enjoyment,” concludes Bignardi. “Future research looking at which part of the genome contributes the most to human ability to enjoy music has the potential to uncover the human gift that confused Darwin most.”
32. What is the main purpose of the research?
A. To design a genetic type of music. B. To decide on the musical abilities.
C. To find out music’s relation to genetics. D. To study the development of music.
33. What was a finding of the research?
A. Music’s rhythm was hard to master. B. DNA affects the ways of enjoying music.
C. General music reward systems determine genes. D. Music understanding abilities can be developed.
34. Why does the author mention Darwin?
A. To prove animals’ musical abilities. B. To emphasize the social function of music.
C. To criticize his outdated theories. D. To highlight the unsolved puzzle of music.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Genes May Influence People’s Enjoyment of Music
B. Music Preferences Depend on Cultural Differences
C. Music Changes Genetic Reward Sensitivity
D. Enjoying Music Makes People Happy

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we would load our little trucks, drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied. Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany(红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to meet the old lady. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, she could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit—no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head. I could see daylight through the roof in several places.
Her little granddaughter was about 8, barefoot and wearing a dress made out of cotton bags holding animal feed. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our advertisement.
I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect—she still sent us the same postcard every time we advertised. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, she swore she would never miss a$10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and each time I advertised in that area, the old lady’s postcards would come to me.

It's true, but staying here may limit the kid's growth. Maybe we should visit a few places in person first. I agree. I've been thinking . a lot about our living situation lately, especially with the kids needing more personal space. I've noticed that too, and working from home has made IT even harder to find a quiet corner. I looked at some listings online last night, and there are a few bigger houses still within our budget.
B. To encourage youth participation in conservation.

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A

They also found genetic influences on music reward sensitivity to be partly independent of general reward sensitivity and music understanding abilities, and discovered that distinct genetic pathways influenced different aspects of music enjoyment, such as emotion control, dancing along with a beat or playing music with others.(研究团队发现,从音乐中体验愉悦感的能力在一定程度上是可遗传的:利用双胞胎研究设计,研究人员估计,瑞典样本中54%的变异性与个体间的DNA差异有关。 由此可推断,A项“Genes May Influence People’s Enjoyment of Music(基因或可影响人们对音乐的喜爱程度)”适合作本文的标题。故选A。

【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了如何控制自己在不恰当的时候发笑的几种方法。
【36题详解】
由上文“Although laughing at inappropriate times can be embarrassing, it’s actually a natural reaction for some people when they’re facing a highly stressful situation.(虽然在不恰当的时候笑可能会让人尴尬,但对一些人来说,当他们面对高度紧张的情况时,这实际上是一种自然的反应。)”可知,本空应进一步说明这种不合时宜发笑的本质。F选项“It could also be a reaction to help you relieve stress and anxiety.(这也可能是一种帮助你缓解压力和焦虑的反应。)”进一步解释了这种笑的积极作用,能承接上文,符合题意。故选F。
【37题详解】
由本段标题“Distract yourself from your urge to laugh.(分散注意力,抑制发笑的冲动。)”及上文“You can try to pinch yourself, for the slight pain will distract you from your urge to laugh.(你可以试着掐自己,轻微的疼痛会让你从发笑的冲动中分散注意力。)”可知,本空应列举另一种分散注意力的具体方法。G选项“Mental exercises work too — make a list of groceries in your mind (心理练习也有用 —— 在脑海中列一份杂货清单)”提出了脑力层面的分心方式,与前文“掐自己”的身体层面方法呼应,符合“分散注意力”的核心要求。故选G。
【38题详解】
由下文“Do you laugh out of nervousness, or do you laugh to cope with painful feelings? Whatever your reasons for laughing, write down when your laughter is causing you issues.(你是因为紧张而笑,还是为了应对痛苦的感觉而笑?无论你笑的原因是什么,写下你的笑声何时给你带来问题。)”可知,本段主要讨论的是识别导致不合时宜发笑的原因,本空应概括这一主题。A选项“Identify what makes you laugh inappropriately.(识别是什么让你在不恰当的时候笑。)”能概括本段主题,符合题意。故选A。
【39题详解】
由本段标题“Move to a private location when you start to laugh, if you can.(如果可以,当你开始笑的时候,转移到一个私密的地方。)”及下文“This gives you time to calm yourself and take a few deep breaths before rejoining everyone.(这会给你时间冷静下来,深呼吸几次,然后再回到大家身边。)”
由上文“Tell the person you often cope with upsetting feelings by laughing, then say you’re sorry if the reaction hurts them. Opening up to them will likely make them understand where you’re coming from.(告诉对方你经常通过笑来应对不愉快的情绪,如果这种反应伤害到他们,就道歉。向他们坦诚可能会让他们理解你的处境。)”可知,本空应说明这种坦诚的额外作用。D选项 “This kind of honesty can also help relieve your urge to laugh(这种坦诚也有助于缓解你发笑的冲动)”承接上文“坦诚让对方理解”的内容,补充了坦诚对自身的积极影响,逻辑递进,符合题意。故选D。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day when I was in that area, I made a big decision.

Twenty years later, while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One day when I was in the area, I made a big decision. Despite knowing that it was a terrible business decision, I loaded a red mahogany piano onto my little truck. I delivered the piano to the old lady. I placed the new piano in the house, advised her and the little girl to keep the chickens off it and left. I was sure that I had just thrown away a new piano. To my surprise, the payments came in on time with a thank-you note every month.
Twenty years later while sitting at a bar. I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago?” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered., My Lord, it was her, the little barefoot girl in the feed sack dress! I was so glad that my kindness did make a real difference.
