"Are you okay?"My brother Matthew asked from the driver's seat as we hung upside
down, trapped by our seat belts and covered in sand.Off-roading on 85,000 acres of dunes
(in California had become our tradition.I felt the blood rushing to my head,my heart
pounding like the loud bass(低音吉他)in a car..It reminded me of the four bass-loving
brothers who lived across from us growing up.As a little girl,I often wondered if Matthew
and I would ever have their friendship.
When Matthew found out he was to have a baby brother,he was over the moon. But to
everyone's surprise,"It's a girl!His disappointment was obvious.
As soon as I could walk,my big brother was everything to me,my idol. But to him,I was
an annoyance, though he found comfort in tormenting (me.Yet,I put up with it,waiting
for moments when he'd reach out from his loneliness.
The sibling relationship is unique, and it's often the longest relationship we have in our
entire lives. After learning that I missed him,Matthew unexpectedly invited me to visit him
at university.In his room,he handed me a drink.We didn't need many words;as siblings,we
had a simple way of chatting.
He knew about my struggles-the family secrets-and became my rock. When I was
excluded from the family Thanksgiving,he refused to attend without me.Instead,we had
dinner-just the two of us.
My big brother, once a tormentor, had become my protector and friend. But after our off-
roading accident,I saw him differently-vulnerable and unprotected."Are you okay?Are
you bleeding?I checked his injuries. The man I'd seen as strong was now human, fragile.
As we got ourselves back upright,I realized it was time for me to be his protector. Our
shared bond had grown even deeper.I looked at my big brother, and we both smiled.Without

Industrial agriculture is often held up as the solution to feeding the world's growing
population. But small farms of about 25 acres or less produce over 70 percent of the world's
food.To raise awareness of the contribution of these farmers,a global photo exhibition,We
Feed the World,is to open on October 12 in London.
"Industrial agriculture, which mainly focuses on a few types of crops,is not the only
answer,"says art director Francesca Price."We want these images to empower people to
support their local food system."
By growing traditional and non-commercial varieties, small farms support biodiversity
and increase food security. With only 12 plants and five animal species making up 75 percent
of what the world eats, food systems will be easily hurt by natural disasters and disease
outbreaks. However, traditional farming communities are working to preserve their ancient
seed diversity.
Keeping variety alive is very important in the face of climate change. In the future,
researchers might need to get particular genes from one variety to help another to adapt to
warmer, stormier,or drier weather,or to save a prized variety from disease.
Contrary to the false impression held by the public, small farms that practise traditional
agriculture can be highly productive.Studies show that the output of crops rises when there's
a wider diversity of crops being grown on a farm, and money is saved since the need for
harmful fertilizer and other chemicals is reduced.
"The photographs of family farmers may tell just a few local stories, but the message is
universal,"says photographer Cheryl Newman."I hope that the images will leave viewers
thinking deeply about where their food comes from and the impact it has on the world around
US."
28.What is the purpose of the photo exhibition?
A.To help small farmers to sell their produce.
B.To show the challenges faced by small farmers.
C.To draw attention to small farmers'contribution
D.To help farmers to fight against industrial agriculture.
29.What can we say about the industrial agriculture?
A.It produces more food than small farms in total.
B.It has been competing unfairly with small farms
C.It is the only way to feed the world's population.
D.It harms biodiversity and decreases food security.
30.Why is it important to preserve the traditional and non-commercial crops?
A.Their genes are much better.
B.Their output is much higher
C.They may help improve the other crops.
D.They don't need chemical fertilizers at all.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A.The importance of traditional small farms.
B.The problems with the industrial agriculture.
C.The consequences of fast-growing population.
D.The impact of climate change on agriculture.

Science fiction has painted a vivid picture of the future-humanoid robots working in
daily settings. This vision has driven decades of research, yet a key challenge remains:
enabling robots to move as naturally and smoothly as humans in places designed specifically
for our physical form.Traditional robots often knock into someone or something in spaces
like factories,offices or homes.
That all changed when Chinese electric vehicle maker XPENG launched its new
humanoid robotIRON"at its 2025 Tech Day,shocking audiences with its lifelike appearance
and elegant walking. In fact,IRON looks and moves so much like a human that people found
it hard to believe it was a robot rather than a real person at first sight.
IRON features a human-like framework )flexible hands and feet,as well as
lightweight arms and legs equipped with powerful engines-enabling free turning and
bending. To achieve natural movement, however,IRON needs more than "bones"and
muscles?”.Its "brain'”consists of three self-developed Turing AI chips(芯片)which provide
2250 TOPS of computing power, processing real-time environmental data to adjust its
movement instantly.
Arepresentative from XPENG noted that IRON's human-like form isn't just an aesthetic
(choice, but rather a practical solution to integrating robots into our spaces. Our
homes,offices,factories-everything is built for people. So when a robot moves and behaves
more like a person,it can work in those spaces far more naturally. He added that user
acceptance matters as much as technology."People have to like it and trust it.A robot that
feels familiar is easier to approach and work with."
XPENG has laid out a clear road map for IRON's future applications, with mass
production by the end of 2026.Initial applications will focus on commercial service situations:
guides in museums, assistants in shopping centers, and traffic directors in airports. With its
natural movement and practical design,IRON is not just a robot,it is a step toward turning
the future into reality.
32.What is the main weakness of previous robots?
A.Lack of customer acceptance.
B.Insufficient computing power.
C.Unacceptably high production cost.
D.Awkward movement in human spaces.
33.What aspect of IRON is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Multiple functions
B.Key components.
C.Theoretical framework
D.Powerful brainpower.
34.What is the main purpose of IRON's human-like form?
A.To fit in with humans.
B.To mirror human features.
C.To replace human workers.
D.To meet human aesthetic standards
35.Where will IRON probably first appear in the future?
A.In industrial plants.
B.In domestic environments
C.In public facilities.
D.In educational institutions.

During your initial reading of material,do you ever go back and reread sentences or
paragraphs? Is it because the material is too difficult to comprehend on the first reading or
because you are asleep?36You are napping (or daydreaming.Halfway down
the page you realize that you have no idea what you have read.37 Thus you go
back and reread, not because you did not understand, but because you were not paying
attention. This type of rereading is called regression.
Napping and daydreaming are habits caused by lack of involvement with the material.Be
demanding on yourself and expect 100 percent attention to the task.Engage your mind.
Visualize the incoming ideas, and relate the new material to what you already know.38
If your mind is truly occupied with the text, you will not be able to think about Friday night
or where to go on Saturday.
Regression is a crutch (that allows you to make up for wasted time.First of all,
become aware of when and why you are regressing.39 Say,"OK.I missed that
paragraph because I was thinking of something else, but I'm going to keep on going and start
paying close attention."
40 Good readers who monitor their own comprehension use it in the reading
process. However, regressing because your mind was asleep is a waste of time
A.Both are to blame.
B.Probably the latter is true.
C.Don't just read the words, think the ideas.
D.Your eyes were engaged, but your mind was not.
E.Spend a few minutes reading the material aloud.
F.Then, start denying yourself the right in order to break the habit
G.Rereading because you did not understand is a reasonable fix-up strategy.

My dad is a phone repairman. He is familiar with the screen with spiderweb cracks-the
fight between parents and kids is always an open secret.Over time,he's become really
sensitive about the problem of teenagers glued to their phones.Unluckily,I have become one
of them.I always spend hours scrolling through social media, playing games, and
ignore family matters.
One rainy evening,I had promised to attend my cousin's birthday dinner, but I lost track
of time while playing an online game and finally told my parents that I had something
important to do.When my parents came home to find me still on the couch,my phone in hand,
my dad's voice trembled with anger."Is the so-called important thing just this? Can't you
prioritize anything over that screen?"I shouted,It's nothing but a dinner!"I stormed out of
the house with a loud slam of the door.Without looking back,I was ready to teach my parents
a lesson by staying far away overnight.
After what seemed like an age,I wandered aimlessly around the wet streets away from
home.I was surrounded by the dark night.Suddenly my foot slipped,my phone crashing
heavily from my hand onto the hard ground. The screen was full of spider cracks and the
phone died instantly.Panic surged through mewithout my phone,I had no way to contact
others.I had to stay at a bus stop, cold and scared,as the rain poured down.
Deep into the night, there were few vehicles on the road, let alone pedestrians. My eyes
grew misty. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, warm yellow headlights cut through the
dark ahead.A car rolled slowly and smoothly toward me.The second it came close,my heart
jumped.

根据“IN BRIEF”部分中第二段“Finalists (national winners of the English-Speaking Union’s or other public speaking competitions in their country) must write and deliver a speech connected with the theme for the year’s competition.(决赛选手(本国英语联盟或其他公共演讲比赛的全国冠军)必须撰写并发表一篇与当年比赛主题相关的演讲。)”
根据最后一部分 “WHAT TO EXPECT(期待什么)” “Prestigious international competition is highly motivating for students and schools as a whole.(享有盛誉的国际比赛对学生和整个学校来说都是极大的激励。)” “Promoting confidence, critical thinking and cultural understanding, broadening participants’ horizons.(促进自信、批判性思维和文化理解,拓宽参与者的视野。)”, “Experienced ESU judges give constructive feedback to all participants.(经验丰富的ESU评委给所有参与者提供建设性的反馈。)”
根据第一段 “It reminded me of the four bass-loving brothers who lived across from us growing up. As a little girl, I often wondered if Matthew and I would ever have their friendship.”
根据第五段中 “When I was excluded from the family Thanksgiving, he refused to attend without me. Instead, we had dinner— just the two of us.”
根据第四段中“After learning that I missed him, Matthew unexpectedly invited me to visit him at university.”可推知, Matthew是个善解人意的人;根据第五段“He knew about my struggles... and became my rock. When I was excluded from the family Thanksgiving, he refused to attend without me. Instead, we had dinner— just the two of us.”
根据第二段中“His disappointment was obvious.”可知,哥哥得知将有一个妹妹时很失望;根据第三段中“As soon as I could walk, my big brother was everything to me, my idol. But to him, I was an annoyance, though he found comfort in tormenting me.”可知,作者很崇拜哥哥,而哥哥却不喜欢妹妹,经常捉弄她;根据倒数第二段中“My big brother, once a tormentor, had become my protector and friend.”
根据第一段“But small farms of about 25 acres or less produce over 70 percent of the world's food. To raise awareness of the contribution of these farmers, a global photo exhibition, We Feed the World, is to open on October 12 in London.”
根据第二段“Industrial agriculture, which mainly focuses on a few types of crops,”和第三段“With only 12 plants and five animal species making up 75 percent of what the world eats, food systems will be easily hurt by natural disasters and disease outbreaks.”
根据第四段“In the future, researchers might need to get particular genes from one variety to another to help adapt to warmer, stormier, or drier weather, or to save a prized variety from disease.”
根据第一段“Industrial agriculture is often held up as the solution to feeding the world's growing population... , a global photo exhibition, We Feed the World, is to open on October 12 in London.”和最后一段“‘The photographs of family farmers may tell just a few local stories,... and the impact it has on the world around us.’” 故选A。

根据最后一段 “Initial applications will focus on commercial service situations: guides in museums, assistants in shopping centers, and traffic directors in airports.”
36. B. Probably the latter is true.
· 解题线索:空前句提出了两个原因选项:材料太难(the material is too difficult)还是走神了(you are asleep)。
“the latter”(后者)指代上文的“you are asleep”,与下文的“napping or daydreaming”完美衔接,是经典的首句承上启下题。
37. D. Your eyes were engaged, but your mind was not.
38. C. Don’t just read the words; think the ideas.
39. F. Then, start denying yourself the right in order to break the habit.
“First of all...” 选项F中的“denying yourself the right”对应“break the habit”,逻辑链清晰。
40. G. Rereading because you did not understand is a reasonable fix-up strategy.

M: Look! I think it’s going to rain in about ten minutes.
W: Oh, no! We can’t have the barbecue in the yard. Let’s have it on the balcony instead. Our kitchen is too small.
M: OK. I agree.
M: Hello, I would like to return this jacket. It doesn’t fit right. I would like my money back. I haven’t worn the jacket.
W: Let me check. If it is within 28 days, that is no problem at all.
M: Hello, Kate! How long are you staying here in London?
W: Just a couple of days.
M: How about coming to my house for dinner tonight? Jane will be pleased to receive you.
W: I’d love to, but I’m meeting some customers from Oxford this evening. Thanks anyway.
W: The cats need to be fed every day, and the plants should be watered once a week.
M: I’ll be there and do the things just as I’m required to. Please don’t worry about that. I’ll even collect your mails every three days for you while you’re gone.
M: Sarah, I’m running for class monitor and I’m wondering if… hmm, if I can count on your support?
W: Oh, if only you had asked me earlier. In fact, I’ve already promised my roommate that she has my support.
M: Hello, Tina! I need you to book a tour for me, something like Cebu in the Philippines?
W: OK. But you will fly to Manila first and then catch another flight to Cebu.
M: That sounds a little complicated. I’d rather just take one flight.
W: If so, you can go to Bali. It’s cheap right now.
M: But the forecast says there will be a storm on the way.
W: Usually, Bali won’t be affected by storms. Besides, Jakarta is also a good place to go traveling in this season.
M: Hmm, Bali sounds more attractive to me.
M: I’m so glad to get your message! Do you have time for a call?
W: I wish, Jake. I’m on the train, heading to work.
M: No worries. Everyone misses you here.
W: I miss the family too! I have plenty of time to talk in the evenings, but you and all our family members are asleep at that time.
M: Ah, the time difference makes staying in touch so difficult! Mom and Dad said that you had just changed a job.
W: Exactly! Let’s have a video call tomorrow and talk about it.
M: Sure. It’d be so great to see you and hear your voice finally!
W: Steve, do you like winter sports?
M: Yes, absolutely. I just went snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
W: Snowshoeing? I’ve never heard about that. I only know there is snowboarding.
M: Everybody knows skiing and snowboarding, but I’m really into snowshoeing.
W: That sounds interesting. Tell me more!
M: Well, a snowshoe is like a big board. When you do snowshoeing, you have regular boots, and you put a big flat round thing on the bottom of your snowshoes.
W: Are they heavy?
M: Long ago they were made of seal skins. But now people use certain metals and light materials, so they are pretty light now.
W: I see. Are they expensive?
M: Can be, but not too expensive. And you can also rent snowshoes at almost any skiing site.
W: Hi, Simon. What are you doing?
M: Oh, hi, Julie. I’m reading a tourist guide to Europe.
W: Are you thinking of visiting Europe some day?
M: Yes, I’m looking forward to such a trip. Have you ever travelled to Europe before?
W: Yes, I’ve actually visited many countries in Europe: France, Germany, Italy and Austria.
M: When did you go there? And how long did you stay, please?
W: Two years ago. For a fortnight.
M: Do you like the trip to Europe?
W: Yes, indeed. There’re many ancient churches and castles. It’s the best trip I’ve ever taken.
M: Sounds great. I decide to make the trip next October on my annual leave.
W: Good idea. You won’t regret it.
Good morning, everyone. Now, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, why not come to the town race on Saturday? The race starts at Town Hall and finishes at the football stadium. That’s five kilometers. Walkers are welcome, too! “Are you okay?” My brother Matthew asked from the driver’s seat as we hung upside down, trapped by our seat belts and covered in sand. Off-roading on 85, 000 acres of dunes(沙丘)in California had become our tradition. I felt the blood rushing to my head, my heart pounding like the loud bass(低音吉他)in a car. It reminded me of the four bass-loving brothers who lived across from us growing up. As a little girl, I often wondered if Matthew and I would ever have their friendship.
When Matthew found out he was to have a baby brother, he was over the moon. But to everyone’s surprise, “It’s a girl! ” His disappointment was obvious.
As soon as I could walk, my big brother was everything to me, my idol. But to him, I was an annoyance, though he found comfort in tormenting(捉弄)me. Yet, I put up with it, waiting for moments when he’d reach out from his loneliness.
The sibling relationship is unique, and it’s often the longest relationship we have in our entire lives. After learning that I missed him, Matthew unexpectedly invited me to visit him at university. In his room, he handed me a drink. We didn’t need many words; as siblings, we had a simple way of chatting.
He knew about my struggles — the family secrets — and became my rock. When I was excluded from the family Thanksgiving, he refused to attend without me. Instead, we had dinner — just the two of us.
My big brother, once a tormentor, had become my protector and friend. But after our off-roading accident, I saw him differently — vulnerable and unprotected. “Are you okay? Are you bleeding? ” I checked his injuries. The man I’d seen as strong was now human, fragile.
As we got ourselves back upright, I realized it was time for me to be his protector. Our shared bond had grown even deeper. I looked at my big brother, and we both smiled. Without him, my life would be unimaginably different. It was my turn to protect him. Thankfully, we had let each other in.
24. Why did the author mention the four bass-loving brothers in the first paragraph?
A. To highlight her admiration for their musical taste.
B. To show her childhood longing for brotherly friendship.
C. To explain the reason for her initial distance from Mathew.
D. To illustrate the noisy environment of their childhood.
25. Why did the author think Matthew became her rock?
A. He was excluded from the family Thanksgiving.
B. He knew his own struggles and family secrets.
C. He supported me when I was not included in the family gathering.
D. He refused to attend the family Thanksgiving party with me.
26. Which of the following can best describe Matthew?
A. Creative and brave B. Ambitious and romantic
C. Thoughtful and protective D. Courageous and humorous
27. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Off-roading Adventure in California’s Dunes
B. Sibling Bonds: From Torment to Protection
C. Family Secrets and Thanksgiving Celebrations
D. Unexpected Challenges of Brotherhood

Industrial agriculture is often held up as the solution to feeding the world's growing population. But small farms of about 25 acres or less produce over 70 percent of the world's food. To raise awareness of the contribution of these farmers, a global photo exhibition, We Feed the World, is to open on October 12 in London.
"Industrial agriculture, which mainly focuses on a few types of crops, is not the only answer," says art director Francesca Price. "We want these images to empower people to support their local food system."
By growing traditional and non-commercial varieties, small farms support biodiversity and increase food security. With only 12 plants and five animal species making up 75 percent of what the world eats, food systems will be easily hurt by natural disasters and disease outbreaks. However, traditional farming communities are working to preserve their ancient seed diversity.
Keeping variety alive is very important in the face of climate change. In the future, researchers might need to get particular genes from one variety to help another to adapt to warmer, stormier, or drier weather, or to save a prized variety from disease.
Contrary to the false impression held by the public, small farms that practise traditional agriculture can be highly productive. Studies show that the output of crops rises when there's a wider diversity of crops being grown on a farm, and money is saved since the need for harmful fertilizer and other chemicals is reduced.
"The photographs of family farmers may tell just a few local stories, but the message is universal," says photographer Cheryl Newman. "I hope that the images will leave viewers thinking deeply about where their food comes from and the impact it has on the world around us."
28. What is the purpose of the photo exhibition?
A. To help small farmers to sell their produce.
B. To show the challenges faced by small farmers.
C. To draw attention to small farmers' contribution.
D. To help farmers to fight against industrial agriculture.
29. What can we say about the industrial agriculture?
A. It produces more food than small farms in total.
B. It has been competing unfairly with small farms.
C. It is the only way to feed the world's population.
D. It harms biodiversity and decreases food security.
30. Why is it important to preserve the traditional and non-commercial crops?
A. Their genes are much better.
B. Their output is much higher.
C. They may help improve the other crops.
D. They don't need chemical fertilizers at all.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The importance of traditional small farms.
B. The problems with the industrial agriculture.
C. The consequences of fast-growing population.
D. The impact of climate change on agriculture.
D
Science fiction has painted a vivid picture of the future—humanoid robots working in daily settings. This vision has driven decades of research, yet a key challenge remains: enabling robots to move as naturally and smoothly as humans in places designed specifically for our physical form. Traditional robots often knock into someone or something in spaces like factories, offices or homes.
That all changed when Chinese electric vehicle maker XPENG launched its new humanoid robot “IRON” at its 2025 Tech Day, shocking audiences with its lifelike appearance and elegant walking. In fact, IRON looks and moves so much like a human that people found it hard to believe it was a robot rather than a real person at first sight.
IRON features a human-like framework (结构), flexible hands and feet, as well as lightweight arms and legs equipped with powerful engines—enabling free turning and bending. To achieve natural movement, however, IRON needs more than “bones” and “muscles”. Its “brain” consists of three self-developed Turing AI chips (芯片) which provide 2250 TOPS of computing power, processing real-time environmental data to adjust its movement instantly.
A representative from XPENG noted that IRON’s human-like form isn’t just an aesthetic (美学 的) choice, but rather a practical solution to integrating robots into our spaces. Our homes, offices, factories—everything is built for people. So when a robot moves and behaves more like a person, it can work in those spaces far more naturally. He added that user acceptance matters as much as technology. “People have to like it and trust it. A robot that feels familiar is easier to approach and work with.”
XPENG has laid out a clear road map for IRON’s future applications, with mass production by the end of 2026. Initial applications will focus on commercial service situations: guides in museums, assistants in shopping centers, and traffic directors in airports. With its natural movement and practical design, IRON is not just a robot; it is a step toward turning the future into reality.
32. What is the main weakness of previous robots?
A. Lack of customer acceptance. B. Insufficient computing power.
C. Unacceptably high production cost. D. Awkward movement in human spaces.
33. What aspect of IRON is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Multiple functions. B. Key components.
C. Theoretical framework. D. Powerful brainpower.
34. What is the main purpose of IRON’s human-like form?
A. To fit in with humans. B. To mirror human features.
C. To replace human workers. D. To meet human aesthetic standards.
35. Where will IRON probably first appear in the future?
A. In industrial plants. B. In domestic environments.
C. In public facilities. D. In educational institutions.
During your initial reading of material, do you ever go back and reread sentences or paragraphs? Is it because the material is too difficult to comprehend on the first reading or because you are asleep? 36 You are napping (打盹) or daydreaming. Halfway down the page you realize that you have no idea what you have read. 37 Thus you go back and reread, not because you did not understand, but because you were not paying attention. This type of rereading is called regression.
Napping and daydreaming are habits caused by lack of involvement with the material. Be demanding on yourself and expect 100 percent attention to the task. Engage your mind. Visualize the incoming ideas, and relate the new material to what you already know. 38 If your mind is truly occupied with the text, you will not be able to think about Friday night or where to go on Saturday.
Regression is a crutch (拐杖) that allows you to make up for wasted time. First of all, become aware of when and why you are regressing. 39 Say, “OK. I missed that paragraph because I was thinking of something else, but I’m going to keep on going and start paying close attention.”
40 Good readers who monitor their own comprehension use it in the reading process. However, regressing because your mind was asleep is a waste of time.
A. Both are to blame.
B. Probably the latter is true.
C. Don’t just read the words; think the ideas.
D. Your eyes were engaged, but your mind was not.
E. Spend a few minutes reading the material aloud.
F. Then, start denying yourself the right in order to break the habit.
G. Rereading because you did not understand is a reasonable fix-up strategy.

My dad is a phone repairman. He is familiar with the screen with spiderweb cracks—the fight between parents and kids is always an open secret. Over time, he's become really sensitive about the problem of teenagers glued to their phones. Unluckily, I have become one of them. I always spend hours scrolling through social media, playing games, and ignore family matters.
One rainy evening, I had promised to attend my cousin's birthday dinner, but I lost track of time while playing an online game and finally told my parents that I had something important to do. When my parents came home to find me still on the couch, my phone in hand, my dad's voice trembled with anger. “Is the so-called important thing just this? Can't you prioritize anything over that screen?” I shouted, “It's nothing but a dinner!” I stormed out of the house with a loud slam of the door. Without looking back, I was ready to teach my parents a lesson by staying far away overnight.
After what seemed like an age, I wandered aimlessly around the wet streets away from home. I was surrounded by the dark night. Suddenly my foot slipped, my phone crashing heavily from my hand onto the hard ground. The screen was full of spider cracks and the phone died instantly. Panic surged through me—without my phone, I had no way to contact others. I had to stay at a bus stop, cold and scared, as the rain poured down.
Deep into the night, there were few vehicles on the road, let alone pedestrians. My eyes grew misty. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, warm yellow headlights cut through the dark ahead. A car rolled slowly and smoothly toward me. The second it came close, my heart jumped.
