A
When the first modern Olympics kicked off in Athens in 1896, it wasn’t clear whether they’d last. However, it continued in 1900 and 1904, but not as a main attraction. Some of the Olympic events might seem a bit unusual to today’s sports fans.
Chariot(战车) Racing
Starting around 684 B.C., drivers raced each other in horse-drawn chariots at the Olympics, sometimes crashing into one another. Only men could join in Olympic events as athletes, but wealthy women could show their support for chariots as sponsors. Because it was a chariot’s funder who received the victory title, not the racer himself, this was the only way women could “win” at the Olympics.
Hot Air Balloon Racing
With the expanded time, the 1900 Olympics featured many more athletes and events than the 1896 Olympics, including various hot air balloon competitions. Hot air balloon drivers competed in terms of distance traveled, altitude reached and best photograph taken from a balloon. However, hot air balloon racing made its appearance for the first time and also the last time in 1900.
Live Pigeon(鸽子) Shooting
Another event that appeared first at the 1900 Olympics was live pigeon shooting. In this competition, organizers set free pigeons into the air in front of a competitor, who then shot as many as possible. The winner was a Belgian man named Lcon de Lun, who shot 21 pigeons. Altogether, the competitors killed around 300 pigeons. Luckily, live pigeon shooting only appeared at the Olympics once.
Painting
Starting with the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm and continuing until the 1948 games in London, the Olympics held art competitions in painting as well as sculpture, music, architecture and literature. The art competitions were called off because so many competitors were professional artists, and the Olympics were supposed to make the amateurs (people who didn’t get paid for their athletic or artistic talent) shine.
21. How could a woman be involved in Chariot Racing?
A. By training a chariot driver. B. By funding a chariot.
C. By competing in the race. D. By signing up as a volunteer.
22. What do Hot Air Balloon Racing and Live Pigeon Shooting have in common?
A. They involved the use of animals as a necessary part.
B. They were warmly welcomed by the audience.
C. They required excellent skills in photography.
D. They only existed once in history as Olympic events.
23. Why were the art competitions removed from the Olympic Games?
A. The costs of organizing them were too high.
B. The quality of the artistic works was far from satisfactory.
C. The competitors were not what the organizers expected.
D. The organizers believed arts were not as important as sports.
B 22. D 23. C
根据题干可定位到原文“Chariot(战车) Racing”部分中的“Only men could join in Olympic events as athletes, but wealthy women could show their support for chariots as sponsors. Because it was a chariot’s funder who received the victory title, not the racer himself, this was the only way women could “win” at the Olympics.(只有男性可以作为运动员参加奥运会,但富有的女性可以作为赞助商表示对战车的支持。因为获得胜利头衔的是战车的资助者,而不是赛车手本人,这是女性在奥运会上“获胜”的唯一途径。)”可知,只有男性可以作为运动员参加战车比赛项目,而获得胜利头衔的是战车的资助者,所以如果一个女性要参与到战车比赛中就要赞助一辆战车。故选B。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据题干可分别定位到“Hot Air Balloon Racing”和“Live Pigeon(鸽子) Shooting”两个部分的最后一句话“However, hot air balloon racing made its appearance for the first time and also the last time in 1900.(然而,1900年热气球竞赛首次出现,也是最后一次出现。)”和“Luckily, live pigeon shooting only appeared at the Olympics once.(幸运的是,活鸽射击只在奥运会上出现过一次。)”
根据题干可定位到最后一段中的“The art competitions were called off because so many competitors were professional artists, and the Olympics were supposed to make the amateurs (people who didn’t get paid for their athletic or artistic talent) shine.(艺术比赛被取消了,因为很多参赛者都是专业艺术家,而奥运会本应让业余爱好者(那些没有因运动天赋或艺术天赋而获得报酬的人)大放异彩。)”
B
On the third day of school, my teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my way to a necessity for a celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem hopeless, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began. “Eighty percent is schoolwork, and twenty percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier selling ice-cream, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest at night won’t ever break.
My routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.
24. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Symbol. B. Solution.
C. Cause. D. Foundation.
25. What does the mother value for the author?
A. The author’s devotion to schoolwork. B. The sacrifice for her daughter.
C. The score of the author’s exam. D. The author’s overall well-being.
26. Why does the author mention “rubber band”?
A. To show a shift in the author’s perspective on pressure.
B. To prove she is good at balancing study and rest.
C. To show a bond between the author and her mother.
D. To explain why she failed the Red Cross application
27. What can we infer about the author after talking with her mother?
A. She stops pursuing academic excellence
B. She decides to give up applying for universities
C. She becomes more confident in facing future challenges
D. She focuses more on extracurricular activities
C 25. D 26. A 27. C
根据第二段中的“The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. (我崩溃的最终catalyst是来自地区红十字会青年委员会的意外拒绝)”可知,红十字会青年委员会的拒绝导致了作者的崩溃,所以“catalyst”意思是“原因”,与C选项“Cause”相符。故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health. (但最重要的是,百分之百重要的是你的心理健康)”以及第四段中的““Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. (“没有什么比你的健康更重要,”她接着说)”可知,母亲看重作者的整体幸福,包括身心健康。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“This rejection made my future seem hopeless, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit. (这次拒绝让我的未来显得毫无希望,我像一根被拉到极限的橡皮筋一样,彻底崩断了)”第五段中的“Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest at night won’t ever break. (她的见解让我如释重负。 我意识到,橡皮筋不必一直紧绷着。 一根白天束发、夜晚能得到放松的橡皮筋,永远不会断裂)”可知,作者之前把自己比作被过度拉伸而断掉的橡皮筋,而现在意识到橡皮筋也可以适时休息,这体现了作者对压力看法的转变。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid.(对失败的恐惧失去了力量。我仍在追求卓越,但我不再害怕)”可知,与母亲交谈后,作者在面对未来挑战时变得更有信心。故选C项。
C
The human mind is deeply influenced by the collective (集体的). This phenomenon, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency of individuals to adopt the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of the groups to which they belong. It shapes our thoughts and decisions, often without conscious awareness. From social media trends to consumer behavior patterns, herd mentality affects how we think and act. But are we truly independent thinkers, or are we simply following the crowd?
Herd mentality has evolutionary roots. For early humans, survival depended on group cohesion (凝聚力). Those who stayed with the tribe (部落) enjoyed protection and access to resources, while loners faced threats alone. Over generations, this adaptive behavior became a natural part of life. Today, although the physical dangers of being alone have decreased, the psychological pull of the group remains powerful.
Human beings are naturally social creatures, driven by a fundamental need for acceptance and a sense of belonging. Our identities are often tied to the groups we belong to, and the fear of rejection drives us to conform, even at the cost of our personal beliefs. This group pressure is strengthened by cognitive biases (认知偏见) that twist judgment. The herd mentality leads individuals to trust the majority opinion without critically evaluating it, while repeated exposure to the same information can make it seem more believable. Social media intensifies these biases by promoting popular content over truth, creating closed-information circles that support existing beliefs rather than challenge them.
In certain circumstances, herd mentality can have positive effects, particularly in situations where individuals have limited information or knowledge. Following the majority can lead to better outcomes, as the collective knowledge of the group goes beyond that of any single person. However, too much herd mentality poses risks, including holding back independent thought, harming creativity, and facilitating the spread of misinformation. Therefore, developing critical thinking — questioning assumptions, evaluating sources, and exploring diverse perspectives — is essential for both personal independence and collective progress.
28. Which behavior best demonstrates herd mentality?
A. Accepting expert advice in complicated situations.
B. Improving a solution with individual creativity.
C. Choosing a hobby based on personal interest and practice.
D. Supporting group opinions to fit in with others.
29. Why did early humans develop herd mentality?
A. To strengthen their hunting skills. B. To increase their chances of survival.
C. To enhance their social status. D. To meet their emotional needs.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The ways individuals form their sense of self-identity.
B. The negative effect of herd mentality on creativity.
C. The role of social media in shaping personal beliefs.
D. The factors contributing to herd mentality.
31. Which statement will the author probably agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Herd mentality is unavoidable in highly connected societies.
B. It is significant to maintain critical thinking in a trend-following society.
C. False information can lead individuals to rely on group opinions.
D. True independence is achieved by not accepting different ideas.
D 29. B 30. D 31. B
根据第一段中的“This phenomenon, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency of individuals to adopt the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of the groups to which they belong.(这种现象被称为从众心理,指个人倾向于接受所属群体的行为、信念与态度)”可知,支持群体观点以融入他人是体现从众心理的行为。
根据第二段中的“Herd mentality has evolutionary roots. For early humans, survival depended on group cohesion (凝聚力). Those who stayed with the tribe (部落) enjoyed protection and access to resources, while loners faced threats alone.(从众心理有进化根源。对早期人类而言,生存依赖群体凝聚力。留在部落中的人能得到保护、获得资源,而独行者只能独自面对危险)”可知,早期人类发展出从众心理是为了增加生存机会,故选B项。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Human beings are naturally social creatures, driven by a fundamental need for acceptance and a sense of belonging. Social media intensifies these biases by promoting popular content over truth, creating closed-information circles that support existing beliefs rather than challenge them.(人类天生是社会性动物,受被接纳与归属感这一基本需求所驱动。
根据最后一段中的“Therefore, developing critical thinking — questioning assumptions, evaluating sources, and exploring diverse perspectives — is essential for both personal independence and collective progress.(因此,培养批判性思维——质疑假设、评估信息来源并探索不同观点——对于个人独立和集体进步都至关重要)”可知,作者可能会同意在跟随潮流的社会中保持批判性思维是重要的,故选B项。
D
Nowadays, it is more common for people to express their thoughts in an e-mail or text. In fact, more and more students use technology for written communication in their lives. Even so, research shows that teaching handwriting skills has its benefits (好处). However, are the benefits worth spending valuable classroom time on teaching handwriting skills when students could be learning more about computer keyboarding?
States across the country have good reasons to require students to learn computer keyboarding skills. For one, students are learning a technology that will help them communicate faster with more people and in many different forms, such as e-mails, websites, blogs, and so on. Also, the better a student's computer keyboarding skills, the greater the chance that student has to become a better writer. Computer tools such as the grammar and spell check make correcting quick and easy, although not 100% accurate With these and many other tools, students gain important computer skills. Furthermore, students no longer have to worry about their writing being graded poorly by teachers. All in all, computer keyboarding skills are a step in the right direction.
Still, the advantages of computer keyboarding skills may not be enough to leave handwriting instruction in the dust. Marlena Hamilton, professor of neurology at University of Pennsylvania, did an experiment with her co-workers to study what happens in students' brains when writing. They found that many of the areas of the brain light up. These are the same areas that are used to learn to read. They then wondered if the same would be true when students looked at letters on a keyboard. “What we found,” she states, “is that brains are much less involved when we just view letters. When we actually use our hands to make things, the brain works much harder.”
Schools across the nation are looking at the evidence and deciding what to do. William McIntyre a reading coach at Sunshine Elementary School in Albany, New York, says, “What we have learned from the research is that learning handwriting benefits students educationally. What we also know is that students need to be taught keyboarding skills.” Now, it is up to each school to make a decision.
32. What does the second paragraph mainly want to show?
A. The roles of computer tools.
B. The importance of communication skills.
C. The advantages of keyboarding skills.
D. The necessity of developing writing skills.
33. What's the author's attitude to students' learning keyboarding skills?
A. Worried B. Doubtful C. Supportive D. Uncaring
34. What can the result of Hamilton's experiment prove?
A. Handwriting is helpful for learning.
B. Keyboarding skills are very useful.
C. Keyboarding makes our brain more active.
D. Handwriting is more difficult than keyboarding.
35. What kind of decision does the author refer to in the last paragraph?
A. Whether schools should still teach handwriting.
B Whether schools should offer computer classes.
C. Whether students should learn keyboarding skills.
D. Whether students should use the grammar and spell check.
C 33. C 34. A 35. A

Communicate openly and honestly
Communication is key in any relationship, and the one with your roommate is no exception. ____37____ For example, if something they do bothers you, don’t let it fester inside. Instead, have an open conversation with them about it. Be respectful and use “I” statements to express how you feel.
I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Harry, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Harry jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子) seated in a rubber tree. It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. “Look, Harry,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Harry could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was safe enough for a nest, but the rubber tree’s thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.

Moved by their perseverance, I decided to build a new nest for the doves. I searched through the garage, gathering materials like twigs, small pieces of cloth, and some soft hay. Harry joined me, his eyes shining with excitement. Together, we carefully crafted a sturdy nest, making sure it was secure and comfortable. As we worked, I couldn’t help but think about how these little birds had brought so much hope and joy into our lives. Once the nest was done, I used a long pole to place it high in the rubber tree, praying that the doves would accept our offering.
“Look! The birds are back!” Harry announced with excitement. I rushed to the window and saw the doves sitting in the new nest. They cooed softly, as if expressing their gratitude. Harry jumped up and down, clapping his hands. “They like it, Mama! They like it!” he exclaimed. I smiled and hugged him, feeling a warm sense of satisfaction. I realized that even in the face of difficulties, a little act of kindness could make a big difference. These doves had not only found a safe home but also taught Harry and me the beauty of giving and the rewards of perseverance.

A
When the first modern Olympics kicked off in Athens in 1896, it wasn’t clear whether they’d last.

A. The author’s devotion to schoolwork. B. The sacrifice for her daughter.
C. The score of the author’s exam. D. The author’s overall well-being.

A. To show a shift in the author’s perspective on pressure.
B. To prove she is good at balancing study and rest.
C. To show a bond between the author and her mother.
D. To explain why she failed the Red Cross application
27. What can we infer about the author after talking with her mother?

The human mind is deeply influenced by the collective (集体的). This phenomenon, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency of individuals to adopt the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of the groups to which they belong. It shapes our thoughts and decisions, often without conscious awareness. From social media trends to consumer behavior patterns, herd mentality affects how we think and act. But are we truly independent thinkers, or are we simply following the crowd?
Herd mentality has evolutionary roots. For early humans survival depended on group cohesion (凝聚力).
William McIntyre, a reading coach at Sunshine Elementary School in Albany, New York, says, “What we have learned from the research is that learning handwriting benefits students educationally.
B. Whether schools should offer computer classes.
C. Whether students should learn keyboarding skills.
D. Whether students should use the grammar and spell check.

Living with a roommate can be a great experience but it also has the potential to be a nightmare if not managed properly. ____36____ Here are some tips to help you build a strong relationship with your roommate.
Communicate openly and honestly
Communication is key in any relationship and the one with your roommate is no exception. ____37____ For example, if something they do bothers you, don’t let it fester inside. Instead, have an open conversation with them about it. Be respectful and use “I” statements to express how you feel. For instance, say “I feel uncomfortable when the dishes are left in the sink for too long” rather than “You always leave the dishes in the sink and it’s disgusting.”
Set clear boundaries
____38____ Decide on things like what time quiet hours start, how to share common spaces, and what to do if one of you has guests over. By setting these boundaries early on, you can avoid potential conflicts down the road. If your roommate has a different idea about a boundary, have a discussion to find a middle ground that works for both of you.
Respect each other’s belongings
Your roommate’s possessions are just as important as yours. ____39____ If you need to borrow something, always ask first. And if you accidentally damage or lose something of theirs, be honest and offer to replace it. Similarly, expect your roommate to treat your things with the same respect.
Share responsibilities
A shared living space means shared responsibilities. ____40____ Divide tasks like cleaning the bath-room, taking out the trash, and grocery shopping. You can create a schedule to make sure everything gets done regularly. This not only keeps the living environment clean and comfortable but also shows that you’re both committed to making the place a nice one to live in.
Building a strong relationship with your roommate takes time and effort, but by following these tips, you can create a harmonious living situation that benefits both of you.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Moved by their perseverance, I decided to build a new nest for the doves.
