On a freezing December day in Tongxin County, Ningxia, the quiet winter air was suddenly broken by screams—a 4-year-old boy had fallen through the ice into the icy lake! People rushed to the edge, hearts sinking, but no one dared step onto the cracking surface.
At that critical moment, 13-year-old Li Jiating, a seventh-grade student, stepped forward bravely. “I’m light—I’ll go!” she said. She took a long pipe handed to her by a bystander and crawled (爬) carefully toward the ice hole. As she reached out to give the pipe to the boy, the ice broke again. Both she and the boy fell into the freezing water.
But Li Jiating didn’t let go. She held tightly onto the pipe until adults on the shore pulled her out. Soon after, firefighters arrived and rescued the boy. Soaked and shivering, Li Jiating quietly rode her bike home without saying a word.
Her father asked about her wet clothes, and she smiled and “lied”: “A water truck splashed me!” It wasn’t until 11 p.m. that night, when his sister called, that the father learned the truth. “I’m scared and sad, but also proud of her kindness,” he said.
The boy’s parents were very grateful. They posted messages to find the “unknown hero” and visited Li Jiating with gifts and money. Though Li Jiating refused the money, they left fruits and a sheep. “This is our sincere thanks,” the boy’s father said.
Many honors came to her. Her school named her “A Good Youth with Courage and Kindness”. The county government gave her prize, and the hospital offered her free physical exams for life. Alibaba also gave her a 5,000-yuan award (奖励).

David Bennett, a 57-year-old man from the US, received the world’s first pig heart transplant(移植)on January 7th, 2022. He died two months later on March 9th.
It may sound like a failure, but it actually is a big step forward for xenotransplantation(异种器官移植).
Xenotransplantation has been a hot topic in medical research for many years.Doctors and scientists look for ways to solve the big problem of organ(器官)transplant waiting lists. In the US alone, over 100,000 patients are on a list waiting for new organs. Many of them will die before getting their chance to receive a heart, a kidney(肾)or other important organs. As a result, medical science has turned to animal organs.
Doctors have experimented with xenotransplantation since the early 20th century. There are few success stories. Usually, patients’ bodies reject(排斥)the animal organs. Bennet lived much longer than other xenotransplantation patients. That’s because scientists removed pig genes(基因)that would cause fast rejection. Then they added human genes to help the body accept the organ.
In fact, Bennett’s case was not the only success. Doctors at New York University attached(连接)gene-edited pig kidneys to a human patient’s blood vessels(血管)outside of the body in 2021. Doctors at University of Alabama put the gene-edited pig kidneys inside a patient’s body in the same year.
Though these successes were short-lived, they show that there may be a way forward for xenotransplantation. “A lot of new information will come out. The development of this field will benefit from it and move forward at faster speed.” Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the transplant program, told The Guardian.
11. How long did David Bennett live after the pig heart transplant? ________
A. 9 months B. 3 months. C. 2 months. D. 1 month.
12. What can we infer(推断)from Paragraph 3? ________
A. Human organs are expensive.
B. Many patients died because of the organ transplant.
C. Compared with human organs, animal organs are easier to get.
D. Patients cannot accept the animal organs in their bodies.
13. According to Paragraph 4, what may the main problem of xenotransplantation be? ________
A. Patients’ ideas. B. Bodies’ rejection.
C. The high price. D. The number of organs.
14. What does the underlined word “benefit” mean in Chinese in the last paragraph? ________
A. 得益 B. 赞扬 C. 传播 D. 涉及
15. What does the writer think of xenotransplantation? ________
A. It should be stopped because of the death cases.
B. It has become more and more popular.
C. It is too difficult to carry on.
D. It is valuable and worth researching.

Researchers in the 1960s found bilingual (双语的) people scored higher on intelligence (智力) tests than monolinguals— people who speak only one language. The latest studies show that being bilingual does not necessarily make people cleverer, but it probably does make you better at certain skills.
Imagine driving down the highway. There are many things that could attract your attention and you really need to be able to watch all of them. Why would bilingualism make you any better at that?
The answer is that bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention—a function (功能) called the executive control system. It’s quite possibly the most important system we have because it’s where all of your decisions about what to attend to, what to ignore (忽视) , what to process are made.
The best method to measure (测量) the executive control system is called the Stroop Test. Suppose you would have the word blue written in red but you have to say the colour red. But “blue” is so eye-catching, and you really want to say “blue”. You need to ignore it so that you can say the colour red. That’s the Stroop Test.
Bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to ignore one to be able to speak in the other. This exercise might help in other ways, too. Researchers say bilingual children are more likely to have friends from different cultures. Bilingual adults are often four to five years later than others in developing Alzheimer’s disease.
16. What did the recent research find about bilingual people?
A They can safely drive their cars. B. They can manage their attention well.
C. They can have a better control of imagination. D. They can easily pick out the colours they want.
17. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Red. B. Blue. C. Test. D. System.
18. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Bilingualism may do harm to people’s health.
B. Bilingualism helps children make more foreign friends.
C. People must practice speaking two languages continually.
D. People use more active words from their mother languages.
19. According to the passage, what is one of the extra benefits of bilingualism for adults?
A. They can learn new languages more easily.
B. They are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.
C. They may develop Alzheimer’s disease several years later.
D. They have a better memory than monolingual people.
20. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How does the Stroop Test work? B. What is the executive control system?
C. Are monolingual people smarter? D. Are bilingual people better at some skills?
【答案】16. B 17. B 18. B 19. C 20. D

第一节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照题目要求,用英语回答问题,并将答案写到答题卡的相应位置。
In the past, most people worked on their feet and moved their bodies all day, so they had lots of exercise. They also mostly ate natural foods like fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Today, many people sit in front of a computer all day at work and often eat a lot of sweet foods, or foods that are made in factories. This can be a big risk to their health.
The disease that causes most deaths in the world today— three in every ten—is heart disease. But many of these deaths need not happen, and are caused because people have not exercised or eaten well enough. Not exercising, or eating unhealthy food, can sometimes cause another dangerous disease-diabetes (糖尿病). When someone has diabetes, there is too much sugar in their blood. In the last twenty years, more and more people have died of diabetes- and almost 10% of the world’s population now has this disease.
Many people are also worried about new health problems that are caused by computers and cell phones. When people stay for too long in front of a computer, they can easily get problems with their eyes, arms, necks, and backs. And when they use computers and cell phones at night, it is often more difficult for them to sleep. Some scientists also think that cell phones may cause health problems because of a kind of energy which they produce called radiation (辐射).

Li Jiating’s story is like a beam of light. We praise her kindness, but we also need to teach children to stay safe while helping others. Let bravery go with wisdom—this is the best way to protect their kindness and pass warmth.
6. Why did Li Jiating decide to crawl on the ice to save the boy?

B. She had received professional ice-rescue training before.

C It is too difficult to carry on.
D. It is valuable and worth researching.
D
A. They can safely drive their cars.

When people stay for too long in front of a computer they can easily get problems with their eyes, arms, necks, and backs. And when they use computers and cell phones at night, it is often more difficult for them to sleep. Some scientists also think that cell phones may cause health problems because of a kind of energy which they produce called radiation (辐射).
