If they’ve started well, he matches her speed bit by bit, but with the opposite foot. They work so well together that Jerusa now holds the women’s world record in the 100-metre race for blind or nearly blind athletes. Since 2012, guides at the Paralympics can win medals too. But the teamwork is about more than just winning. Garcia is a runner himself. “I like being a guide,” he said. “I feel more pressure (压力) at the Paralympics. I have to give 200% of myself to avoid mistakes and help my teammate do her best.” In cycling, Hannah Chadwick and her guide, Skyler Espinoza, also work closely. When they ride together, Espinoza always holds Chadwick’s hand before starting,” It’s a reminder (提示) that we’re in this together,” Espinoza said. Chadwick and Espinoza follow the same training plan. Sometimes, when the training gets hard, Chadwick thinks of her teammate. “I’m not training just for myself,” she said. “I’m training for both of us!” People sometimes say Espinoza is making a sacrifice (牺牲) for a disabled athlete. But she doesn’t see it that way. Espinoza believes that if she hadn’t been a Paralympic guide, she would never have shone so much in sport. “I’m lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose to do it with her,” she said. 29.How does Garcia help the blind athlete Jerusa Geber? To solve these problems, many cities have started to try vertical greening (垂直绿化). Vertical greening means growing plants on the walls of buildings, bridges and other structures. It is a new and effective way to make cities greener and more livable.     Vertical greening has many advantages. First, it can improve air quality. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis (光合作用). They can also filter (过滤) dust and harmful gases in the air, making the air cleaner. Second, it can reduce the heat island effect. Green plants can absorb heat from the sun and cool down the surrounding environment. Studies show that buildings with vertical greening are 5 to 8 degrees cooler in summer than those without. Third, vertical greening can provide habitats (栖息地) for birds and insects, helping to protect biodiversity (生物多样性). In addition, it can make cities more beautiful and enjoyable.     However, vertical greening is not easy to carry out. It requires careful planning and proper technology. For example, the walls need to be strong enough to support the weight of the plants and the soil. Special irrigation systems (灌溉系统) are also needed to water the plants regularly. Moreover, choosing the right plants is important. Some plants are more suitable for vertical growth, such as ivy (常春藤), climbing roses and ferns (蕨类植物). These plants have strong climbing abilities and can adapt to the environment on walls.     Many cities in China have already adopted vertical greening. For example, in Shanghai, many office buildings and residential buildings have green walls. The Shanghai Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the world, has a large-scale vertical greening system. In Guangzhou, some bridges are covered with green plants, which not only look beautiful but also help to reduce noise. These examples show that vertical greening is becoming more and more popular in China.     As cities continue to develop, vertical greening will play a more important role in creating a sustainable (可持续的) urban environment. It is a promising way to make our cities greener, healthier and more comfortable to live in. 36.What is vertical greening? A.Growing plants on the ground in cities. B.Growing plants on the walls of buildings and other structures. C.Making cities greener by planting more trees in parks. D.Using green materials to build buildings. 37.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of vertical greening? A.Improving air quality. B.Reducing the heat island effect. C.Increasing the weight of buildings. D.Protecting biodiversity. 38.Why is choosing the right plants important for vertical greening? A.Because some plants are more expensive. B.Because some plants have strong climbing abilities and can adapt to the wall environment. C.Because some plants can absorb more carbon dioxide. D.Because some plants are more beautiful. 39.Which city in China is mentioned as an example of adopting vertical greening? A.Beijing. B.Shanghai. C.Chengdu. D.Chongqing. 40.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The problems of modern cities. B.The advantages of vertical greening. C.Vertical greening as a new way to make cities greener. B At the Paralympic Games (残奥会), many blind or nearly blind athletes race (比赛) with the help of a guide. These pairs work very closely together. Jerusa Geber is a runner who lost her sight as a teenager. When she races with her guide Garcia, he runs to her left. They each hold one end of a short rope. The high altitude (海拔) made her feel sick, and the local food upset (使不适) her stomach. But she didn’t give up and quickly got used to the new environment. When heavy rain caused landslides (滑坡), she jumped into action with WFP. According to Wu, she helped hand out emergency supplies (供应) to families and made sure they received the help they needed. She also used the photography (摄影) skills she learned in college to film interviews (访谈) for the WFP’s social media.                                 Through her experience in Bolivia, Wu realized that volunteering needs a strong belief and commitment (奉献). “I’m thankful for the chance to come to Bolivia at such a young age to serve this country, and I’m proud of the work I’ve done,” she said. Travelling alone to one of South America’s less-developed countries, Wu showed courage, belief and independence (独立). 32.Why did Wu Miao apply for the job in Bolivia? D Vertical Greening: A New Way to Make Cities Greener    In recent years, more and more cities around the world are facing environmental problems such as air pollution and the heat island effect (热岛效应). But perhaps most of us have never thought about what it takes to run such intelligent (智能的) products. One thing this technology depends on may get you surprised—plenty of water! Why does a computer programme need so much water? In fact, in order to have the ability to write like a human, an AI system must first study a large amount (数量) of text written by humans. In the process, it not only uses much electricity but also produces much heat. So, on hot days, computer engineers use water to keep the computers cool. Microsoft has worked with OpenAI for years. In a recent report, Microsoft shared how much water was used from 2021 to 2022. The total amount of water used in cooling machines is enough to fill more than 2,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It is believed the training of AI systems leads to the big rise. Usually, AI supercomputing centres lie in places that are cool for most of the years. These centres can just use outside air to cool the computers. But in summer, the temperature goes to 30℃. The computer engineers have to use a large amount of water to cool all the machines. ChatGPT also “drinks” water while chatting. Scientists have worked out the environmental costs of using AI products. For a conversation of 20 to 50 questions and answers, ChatGPT uses up a bottle of water, about 500 ml. The exact amount of water used in chatting changes with the seasons. Many people are unaware of the problem. If you don’t know how many resources ChatGPT uses, how can you help to save water? The next time you are amazed at how smart ChatGPT is, think about how much water it’s “drinking”. Why not reduce the time of talking to machines—to help save the Earth’s water resources? Around the world, intelligent products are 56 heatedly. However, the fact that much water is used in running them may 57 many people. The 58 for using much water When an AI has the ability of 59 like a man, it needs electricity and produces heat. As a result, water is used to keep the computers cool. A recent report by Microsoft From 2021 to 2022, the amount of the water used in cooling machines kept 60 . The training of the AI systems is the cause of it. The analysis (分析) The amount of used water is ◇ connected with 61 where AI supercomputing centres are built. ◇ affected by the high 62 in these places. ◇ not the 63 all year round and changes with the seasons.
