One of the ways we make our research accessible around the world is through providing professional education. These offerings are scheduled at various times throughout the year.
Making Thinking Visible (February 19 to March 15)
In this course, you’ll learn how the most effective teachers use thinking routines for maximum impact by employing the core practices of listening, questioning, and documentation. Develop a better understanding of the power of thinking routines. Try out core practices associated with making thinking visible, and learn how they relate to and interact with one another.
Look, Listen, Interpret, Teach (March 17 to April 6)
Drawing on the joint research between Project Zero and professors in Reggio Emilia, Italy, this course offers you the opportunity to learn how to document student learning in ways that “make visible” what and how students learn and that provide useful data for reflecting on and improving teaching.
Playful Learning (April 6 to May 3)
Play is central to how children learn. Yet integrating play into a formal school setting can be challenging because the nature of play and the nature of school are often in conflict. This course, based on the frameworks developed in PZ’s “Pedagogy of Play” project, (financed by the Lego Foundation) introduces core principles and practices of playful learning and gives you the opportunity to design and try out a playful learning approach in your own context.
Cultures of Thinking in Action (April 16 to May 23)
The course builds on the ideas of Ron Ritchhart’s new book of the same name (2023). It offers you the opportunity to explore the 10 mindsets that support deeper learning and thinking. You will also develop your skill with tools that you can use to turn your classroom or learning context into a community in which thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted.
21. Which course takes the shortest time?
A. Making Thinking Visible
B. Look, Listen, Interpret, Teach
C. Playful Learning
D. Cultures of Thinking in Action
22. Who funds “Playful Learning”?
A. Project Zero.
B. Reggio Emilia professors.
C. The Lego Foundation.
D. Ron Ritchhart’s research.
23. What is the primary purpose of the text?
A. To compare teaching methods globally.
B. To promote career development programs.
C. To advertise Ron Ritchhart’s new book.
D. To summarize educational research findings.

Dian Fossey arrived in Rwanda’s misty mountains in 1967. With no formal scientific training, she pioneered a new way of study: integration, aiming to bridge the divide between humans and gorillas (大猩猩). This involved patiently imitating them — chewing wild grass, making deep sounds, and walking on all fours — as a way to build mutual understanding. Over time, these efforts allowed her to be accepted by creatures once feared as violent beasts, revealing them as gentle and social.
But the paradise Fossey found was under threat. Illegal hunters, armed with arrows and traps, pushed deeper into the forest. In 1978, a young gorilla named Digit, whom she had known since it was born, was killed. A profound and personal sorrow seemed to harden her resolve. Her focus shifted decisively from observation to direct action. Fossey’s battle against illegal hunting consumed her life. She began capturing and questioning illegal hunters, burning down their camps, and pretending to use black magic to make locals believe she was a witch. Her extreme methods created tension with others who preferred tourism and education as a way to protect the gorillas.
Fossey saw tourism as a direct threat. Isolated at her research center, she grew more convinced that only direct action could save the gorillas. This earned her many enemies. On December 26, 1985, her lonely struggle ended in violence. She was found murdered in her cabin. The crime was never solved — many believe it was linked to illegal hunting, smuggling (走私), or conflicts over land and money. As her former assistant said, she was “standing in the way of certain individuals making money”.
She was buried beside her gorilla friends like Digit, and her legacy lives on in these mountains. Though she did not live to see it, her fierce devotion inspired a global movement that saved the species from extinction.
24 Why did Fossey imitate gorillas’ behavior?
A. To gain gorillas’ trust.
B. To feel more comfortable in jungle.
C. To study their eating habit.
D. To prove gorillas were gentle creatures.
25. What directly caused Fossey’s change in protection methods?
A. Tragedy in her personal life.
B. The death of a gorilla close to her.
C. Her desire to gain local recognition.
D. Disagreements with tourism supporters.
26. What could be the main reason behind her murder?
A. A random violent act.
B. Conflicts with researchers.
C. Anger from local people.
D. Her prevention of illegal profits.
27. Which of the following best describes Fossey’s strategy?
A. A universally accepted approach.
B A great success at a personal cost.
C. A direct solution to gorilla extinction.
D. A scientific and cooperative model.

Standing in Nevada’s dry landscape, Project Red uses new methods to capture geothermal (地热) energy. Unlike old plants that need natural hot water storage areas near volcanoes, this facility uses Enhanced Geothermal Systems(EGS) to get heat from solid rock. Workers start by drilling two wells over 8,000 feet deep into rock hot enough to roast a turkey. Through the first well, high-pressure water is pumped down, breaking the rock to create paths. A key procedure involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts — a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield.
Water moves through these man-made cracks for 24-48 hours, gathering heat until temperatures exceed 380°F. As heated water rises through the second well, pressure changes near the surface turn about 20% into steam. This steam powers machines connected to generators, creating clean electricity. Then the steam cools and condenses (凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system.
This progress eliminates geothermal’s old obstacle of needing volcanic zones. Traditional plants simply collect steam from natural hot springs, while EGS establishes water storage in unreachable ground. Another feature of the system is that they can be made more profitable by taking advantage of energy price shifts. Operators could plug the exit wells, causing water to accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted during times when it is most valuable — such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working.
Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape is changing, are increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing push to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts — as Paris and Munich already do.
28. What is the main purpose of creating the second well?
A. To speed up rock breaking.
B. To improve the efficiency of heat transfer.
C. To reduce drilling difficulty.
D. To regulate the pressure inside the wells.
29. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. Butane. B. Electricity.
C. Water. D. Steam.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. EGS depends on specific ground types.
B. Traditional plants will be replaced by EGS.
C. Geothermal energy is a stable power source.
D. EGS is more advanced than solar and wind.
31. What key development is mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Geothermal energy changing the landscape.
B. Traditional energy losing competitiveness.
C. Energy companies abandoning fossil fuel.
D. Geothermal energy expanding applications.

When someone loses weight, people notice, comment, and ask how. The question implies that whatever method they used is worth knowing, reproducing, or admiring. It positions weight loss as an achievement, a moral victory, a signal of discipline or virtue. But what if their weight loss came from grief, stress, depression or a medication that finally brought balance to their body chemistry?
Our curiosity about how someone lost weight is rarely neutral. Often, it’s rooted in our own insecurity or desire for control. We want to know what works — because culturally, we’ve been taught that managing our bodies is a lifelong project. When we see someone “succeed,” we want the recipe. However, rather than self- improvement projects, our bodies are complex ecosystems — shaped by genetics, hormones, health conditions, socioeconomic factors, medications, and emotions. When we reduce someone’s body to a before- and- after story, we dehumanize them into an object lesson.
The recent explosion of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro has made this question even more controversial. Many people assume any visible change must be drug- related, and they ask with hardly disguised judgment or envy. “Did you use one of those medications?” has become the new “Did you get work done?” The subtext is clear: Did you earn this, or did you cheat?
This framing is not only prejudiced — it’s unscientific. GLP-1 medications are legal medical treatments for conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), metabolic dysfunction, and obesity. Shame has no place in a conversation about health or healing. Yet we’ve moralized weight loss to such an extent that even those who find life-changing relief through medication are made to feel guilty or defensive for it.
We live in a society enthusiastic about Cinderella stories. Weight loss is still treated like a transformation myth. But health and self-worth are not determined by body size, and accomplishments shouldn’t be measured in pounds. When we cease looking into how people lost weight, we start to undo a small but powerful part of that narrative. We give others and ourselves permission to exist without explanation, justification, or public commentary on our bodies.
32. Why do people ask about weight loss methods?
A. To manage their desire for control.
B. To address their own body image anxiety.
C. To identify effects of weight medications.
D. To study human body ecosystems closely.
33. What does the underlined word “framing” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Avoiding controversial questions.
B. Building support structures.
C. Labelling medication as cheating.
D. Misjudging health conditions.
34. Which statement would the author probably agree with?
A. Weight loss signals discipline and virtue.
B. Medications are universal health solutions.
C. Dieters should defend their own rights.
D. Self-worth is independent of body size.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Celebrating Body Changes
B. Psychology of Losing Weight
C. Stop Judging Weight Loss
D. Medical Solutions to Overweight

The moment 13-year-old Fausto saw his favorite band on TV, his eyes grew large with excitement. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life— to play the guitar in his own band.
Fausto decided to earn money to buy a guitar. He turned off the television, hopped onto his sister’s bike and rode north to the nicer section of Fresno in search of work. He went from door to door, but after three hours he managed to get only one job— being asked to hurry down to the store to buy a loaf of bread, for which he received a dirty quarter.
While he was sitting in a park eating an orange a dog approached him. It was a fancy dog, with a shiny collar and a tag with his name, Roger, and address. This dog looked like he belonged to rich people. An idea flashed across Fausto’s mind. He decided to take Roger home and collect a reward, saying he had found him near the freeway which is 15 miles away. The lie formed easily, but a small, cold knot of unease tightened unexpectedly in his stomach as Fausto walked the dog to its house.
He knocked. A woman in a silky bathrobe opened the door. “Ma’ am,” Fausto said, gripping Roger by the collar. “I found your dog by the freeway. His tag says he lives here, doesn’t he?” “That’s right!” the woman replied in a surprised and joyful voice. She then invited Fausto to come into the house.
Fausto looked around, amazed by the shiny furniture. “You’re probably hungry after your good deed,” the woman said, bringing Fausto a tall glass of milk and a warm apple pie. Fausto ate, aware of the woman’s caring eyes watching him. He felt embarrassed by lying to such a kind lady.
“That was good,” he said after he finished. “Thank you, Ma’ am! Now I have to go home.”
As Fausto walked to the door, the woman opened her purse and took out two bills. “For your honesty and help,” she said warmly, pressing two hundred dollars into his hand. “You’re a good boy.” Fausto couldn’t meet her gaze, his face burning with a sudden feeling of shame that went deeper than mere embarrassment.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
With the money gripped tightly in his hand, Fausto headed to the music shop

Not just today, but throughout my whole career — there have been a lot of memorable moments and I can’t imagine any of them without you. I would like to have won my last ever game, but I gave it my best shot. Of course, I have to say that Carlston played an incredible match. It was definitely the toughest match of my career, but it was an honor to play against such a talented player. I have to admit that it was a really difficult tournament for me. I got injured very early in the tournament. After that, it was a real struggle to play through to the finals with a knee injury. I just told myself to focus on playing my best for as long as possible. Fortunately, I made it to the final and got to play against Carlston, so when I look back on this, I think I’m just going to be proud. I did leave everything out there on the court.

24. Why did Fossey imitate gorillas’ behavior?
B. A great success at a personal cost.
C. A direct solution to gorilla extinction.
D. A scientific and cooperative model.
A 25. B 26. D 27. B
根据第一段中的“This involved patiently imitating them — chewing wild grass, making deep sounds, and walking on all fours — as a way to build mutual understanding. Over time, these efforts allowed her to be accepted by creatures once feared as violent beasts, revealing them as gentle and social. (这包括耐心地模仿它们——嚼野草、发出低沉的声音、用四肢行走——以此建立相互理解。随着时间的推移,这些努力让她被曾经被视为凶猛野兽的动物所接受,展现出它们温和且群居的一面。)”可知,福西模仿大猩猩的行为是为了获得大猩猩的信任。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“In 1978, a young gorilla named Digit, whom she had known since it was born, was killed. A profound and personal sorrow seemed to harden her resolve. Her focus shifted decisively from observation to direct action.(1978年,一只名叫迪吉特的年轻大猩猩被杀,这只大猩猩从出生起她就认识。一种深切的个人悲痛似乎坚定了她的决心。她的重点果断地从观察转向了直接行动。)”可知,直接导致福西保护方式改变的是一只与她亲近的大猩猩的死亡。故选B项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The crime was never solved — many believe it was linked to illegal hunting, smuggling (走私), or conflicts over land and money. As her former assistant said, she was “standing in the way of certain individuals making money”.(这起案件至今未破——许多人认为这与非法捕猎、走私或土地和金钱纠纷有关。正如她前助手所说,她“挡了某些人赚钱的路”。)”可知,她被谋杀的主要原因可能是她阻止了非法利益。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Though she did not live to see it, her fierce devotion inspired a global movement that saved the species from extinction.(尽管她没能活着看到这一切,但她的热切奉献激发了一场全球运动,使这个物种免于灭绝。)”
C
B Traditional energy losing competitiveness.
C. Energy companies abandoning fossil fuel.
D. Geothermal energy expanding applications.
B 29. C 30. C 31. D
根据第一段“A key procedure involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts — a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield. (一个关键步骤是再钻一口3250英尺的水平井,以扩大系统接触的热岩面积——这是石油和天然气行业为最大化产量而采用的一种技术。)”可知,钻第二口井的目的是扩大热岩接触面积,从而提高热量传递效率。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Then the steam cools and condenses (凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system. (然后蒸汽冷却并凝结回热水,这些热水被用来加热另一种沸点低得多的液体,如丁烷,以驱动第二台发电机,然后才被输送回系统。)”可知,热水先被用来加热丁烷,之后才被输送回系统,所以it指代的是“热水”。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Operators could plug the exit wells, causing water to accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted during times when it is most valuable — such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working. (操作人员可以堵住出口井,使水在系统内积聚,从而增加压力和热量。然后,可以在能源最有价值的时候提取能源,比如在太阳能或风能无法工作的阴天或无风期。)”可知,地热能源不受天气条件影响,可以稳定提供电力,是一种稳定的能源。故选C项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape is changing, are increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing push to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts — as Paris and Munich already do. (一些石油和天然气公司意识到能源格局正在发生变化,对建设地热系统的兴趣日益浓厚。甚至有越来越多的人推动使用直接地热来为建筑物供暖,要么通过住宅浅层热泵,要么通过为整个地区设计的综合系统——就像巴黎和慕尼黑已经做的那样。)”可知,地热能源的应用领域正在不断拓展。故选D项。
D
B 33. C 34. D 35. C
根据文章第二段第一、二句“Our curiosity about how someone lost weight is rarely neutral. Often, it’s rooted in our own insecurity or desire for control. (我们对他人如何减肥的好奇心鲜少是不带立场的。它常常植根于我们自身的不安全感或对控制感的渴望)”可知,人们询问减肥方法,并非出于单纯的好奇,其深层动机是为了应对自身的不安全感,即对自己形象的焦虑,或寻求一种能掌控自己身体的方法。由此推知,人们询问减肥方法是为了解决他们自身的身体形象焦虑。故选B项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段最后两句““Did you use one of those medications?” has become the new “Did you get work done?” The subtext is clear: Did you earn this, or did you cheat? (“你用过那些药吗?” 已经变成了新版的“你整容了吗?”潜台词很明确:这是你努力得来的,还是你作弊了?)”及第四段第一句“This framing is not only prejudiced — it’s unscientific. (这种framing不仅是偏见——也是不科学的)”可知,这里的“framing”指的是上文将使用药物减肥视为“作弊”,这种带有道德评判的偏见的界定方式。因此,“framing”在此处是指将药物治疗贴上“作弊”的标签。故选C项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段第三句“But health and self-worth are not determined by body size, and accomplishments shouldn’t be measured in pounds. (但健康和自我价值并非由体型决定,成就也不该用磅来衡量)”和最后一句“We give others and ourselves permission to exist without explanation, justification, or public commentary on our bodies.

While he was sitting in a park eating an orange, a dog approached him.

Turning his back on the shining guitar, Fausto walked with determination towards the woman’s house.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the money gripped tightly in his hand, Fausto headed to the music shop. The very guitar he had dreamed of was shining there. Hardly could he tear his gaze away from the instrument, imagining his fingers dancing on its strings. Yet, a sense of guilt pierced his heart. “It is not the right way to fulfill a dream”, a voice whispered inside him. The crisp bills in his hand, now felt like a weight too heavy to bear. Lost in the painful conflict between temptation and conscience, he stood motionless, feeling ashamed.
Turning his back on the shining guitar, Fausto walked with determination towards the woman’s house. He knocked on the door firmly. When the woman appeared with a surprised look, Fausto confessed everything. “Actually,” he said, his voice steady, “it was my honesty that was almost lost, not just your dog.” Moved by his courage and integrity, the lady, whose eyes softened with an understanding smile, not only insisted he keep the reward but also offered him an old guitar from her attic. It was this act of honesty, not the money, that truly fulfilled his dream.
