Teaching Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Language Ability: Skim and scan a vlog script to identify key attractions; Understand and use phrases like get a taste of, be well worth, in the centre of. Cultural Awareness: Appreciate the blend of history (Palace Museum) and daily life (Siheyuan/Hutong) in Beijing; Reflect on the concept of "hometown" as a carrier of memory. Thinking Quality: Analyze the structure of a vlog (Intro-Body-Conclusion); Infer the author’s emotion (pride/welcoming) from tone and word choice. Learning Ability: Use context clues to guess meanings; Collaborate to create a mind map of the tour route. II. Key and Difficult Points Key Points: Understanding the spatial order of the vlog; Mastering the inverted sentence "In the centre of Beijing is the Palace Museum." Difficult Points: Grasping the abstract meaning of "get a taste of the past"; Differentiating between factual description and emotional appeal. III. Teaching Methods & Aids Methods: Top-down Reading Approach, Cooperative Learning, Critical Thinking Questions. Aids: Video clip of a Beijing vlog, PPT with route map, Worksheet for mind mapping. IV. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Pre-reading Lead-in: Play a 30-second silent video of Beijing scenes. Ask: "If you were a vlogger, what title would you give this video?" Prediction: Look at the title "My hometown, Beijing" and the picture. Q1: What kind of language will the writer use? (Formal or informal?) Q2: What three things do you expect to see? (Food, Places, People?) Step 2: While-reading (1) Task 1: Skimming for Structure (Part A): Read quickly and complete the chart. Identify the 4 main stops: Palace Museum, Tian’anmen Square, Siheyuan/Hutong, Food/Opera. (2) Task 2: Scanning for Details (Part B): Read again and circle correct words. Focus: Time (early morning), Shape (square), Location (centre). (3) Task 3: Deep Dive (Language & Emotion): Sentence Analysis: "In the centre of Beijing is the Palace Museum." (Discuss why the author puts the location first – emphasis on place). Phrase Study: "Get a taste of the past." Ask: "Can you literally taste the past? What does it mean?" (Experience/Feel). Emotion Check: Find words that show the writer loves Beijing (amazing, wonderful, delicious, don’t miss). Step 3: Post-reading (1) Activity: Scenario: You are walking through a Hutong. Close your eyes. Imagine the sounds and smells. How would you feel? (2) Discussion: Why does the writer suggest walking through Hutongs instead of just taking a bus? (To feel the life, not just see the buildings). (3) Connection: How is this similar to or different from your hometown? Do you have old streets? (4) Task: Complete the travel plan in Part C individually, then check in pairs. Step 4: Summary & Retelling Mind Map: Draw a route on the board. Students retell the vlog using the map and key phrases (show around, well worth, get a taste of). V. Homework Read the script aloud with emotion (record and send). Write 3 sentences describing your favorite place in your hometown using "be well worth" and "get a taste of". VI.
