The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices, gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade. Then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about Maths and science came to China.

Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. Warisara was among 11 Thai youths who joined a threeweek study camp at Shenyang Ligong University from Oct 10 to 31, 2024. During the event, young people from both China and Thailand were surprised by the similarities between the two cultures.
In one cultural exchange class, Warisara explained to her Chinese partners that when meeting teachers, Thai people press their palms(手掌) together, with the height of the pressed palms standing for respect: for elders, hands are raised to chest(胸口) level; for partners, they remain at the stomach. “Thai greeting etiquette is similar to our traditional custom of bowing(鞠躬) to elders,” said Zhang Yunshan, a Chinese student. “The deeper the bow, the greater the respect shown.”

In an art class, Warisara presented a series of traditional Thai dance masks and explained that red symbolizes bravery and loyalty. “In Thai traditional performances, mask colours express characters' personalities,” she said. The art teacher responded, “This is truly similar to Beijing Opera masks, where red also stands for loyalty and courage, as seen with Guan Gong, while black symbolizes honesty, like Bao Zheng.”
In addition to these similarities, the young guests were also attracted by the cultural differences. The modern Chinese lifestyle left a strong impression on the Thai students as well. The smart dining system in the university dining hall amazed Warisara. “On our first day, Chinese students showed us how to scan, order, pay, and pick up our food — all within two minutes. It's unbelievable,” she said.
