While many people were relaxing or traveling during the Labour Day holiday, I was volunteering at Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai.
It was my first time to volunteer in another country. My job was to help visitors with directions. I thought it was easy at first, but I soon realized that there was more to it.
I worked with two helpful Chinese women. Some people didn’t come to me because they thought I couldn’t speak Chinese. To break the ice, I greeted everyone with a big smile and said in Chinese, “Welcome! How can I help you?” They were surprised and happy to hear me speak Chinese.
One day, a family from Shaanxi came by. The young boy shouted, “Waiguoren!” I smiled and asked if they needed any help. The father wasn’t sure at first, but one of my workmates said, “He can speak Chinese.” Then the father started talking to me. He asked me some questions about my country. One was about why many Africans eat with their hands. I explained that it’s part of our culture. Later, I asked him about his hometown. He told me about Xi’an and the Silk Road. His son even practiced a few words with me. We all had fun.
The experience made me understand Chinese culture better, and I was surprised by how diverse (多样的) the country is. We can’t learn it all from books. To all students: ________

Before I was in Grade Three, I didn’t like to help others. I would get irritated (恼怒的) when someone asked me for help. Then things changed.
One cloudy day, when I was walking to school, I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin stick and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning and yet he was wearing sunglasses. But I didn’t think much about it and crossed the road.
When I reached the other side, suddenly I heard cars sounding their horns (喇叭). I turned around and saw that the man was in the middle of the road. It seemed that he was too scared to move. Just then, I knew that the man wasn’t able to see. I ran quickly back to him and helped him cross the road. The man turned his head to me and said, “Thank you very much for your kind help.”
It made me feel good to hear those words. In fact, I felt so good that I asked him where he was going and if he needed more help. He told me that he was going to a supermarket, which was not far from my school. I walked with him to the supermarket and then went to school.
From that day on, I often tried to help people in need. And now, I volunteer to help out at the old people’s home in front of my home every Sunday afternoon. Being helpful makes me happy and I no longer find it irritating.

Near Fujian Normal University in Fuzhou, students saw something strange on a busy street full of food shops. Almost every small food shop used the same pay QR code (二维码). All the money made that day went to one man—Zhang Jianwu. People call him “Pancake Uncle”.
Zhang has sold pancakes on this street for many years. Everyone likes him because he is nice and works very hard. But sadly, doctors found out he got cancer not long ago. His medical bills were very expensive. So his family had to sell his pancake shop and share his story on the internet for help.

Gianna Peak, an 11-year-old girl, believes that wearing a new schoolbag can make any child feel special. But some families don’t have enough money for schoolbags. This is why Gianna donates them to children from these families.
She started this to help the community she loves so much. She thinks people should care enough to make those children feel special, no matter what situation life has put them through.
For Gianna, getting a new schoolbag is exciting. So she wants children who cannot buy one to feel excited and special too. She also wants them to have what they need so they can feel prepared on their first day of school. To make this happen, she not only gives children schoolbags as gifts, but also fills each one with things like notebooks, colored pencils, and paper.
To pay for her project, Gianna uses her birthday money and the money she gets from doing weekly housework. Her mother also joins her in asking people for help. They create a budget and compare prices at different stores to find the best prices.
Gianna has some advice for other young people, “Don’t think you can’t set goals and achieve them because you’re young. If you get an answer of ‘no’, that’s not called failure (失败). It just means you need to find a new way for an answer of ‘yes’. Even when it’s hard, never give up on your goal.”

Happier
2 About eighty per cent of them said they felt more energetic and less stressed (焦虑不安的). They told their parents they wanted to continue to volunteer.
More friends
