When my uncle passed away, I inherited a small Maya pot, no bigger than an orange. It had a human face molded into the clay and a hole, suggesting it was worn. This ancient object immediately captured my imagination. I knew it was from the Maya Classic period (A.D. 250-900, the golden age of Maya civilization, mainly distributed in present-day Guatemala, Mexico and other regions). Soon, deeper questions arose: Was it authentic? How was it obtained from its ancient site? And was I its rightful owner? These thoughts began a long ethical journey.
I contacted experts in ancient cultures. They confirmed the pot’s authenticity and helped me locate the Norwegian student who had acquired it in the 1960s. He explained that during that time, Guatemala City was a place where ancient artifacts were traded openly. Many vendors sold such items, and he bought this pot from a German seller. He remembered, “No one thought anything about it” back then, implying people ignored ethical issues.
This conversation left me uneasy. I felt a strong urge to return the pot to Guatemala, believing its true home was in a museum or archaeological site. However, months turned into years, and I never mustered the resolve to make the trip. Parting with the pot felt like losing my connection to my uncle, making the decision difficult. I was torn between emotional attachment and ethical responsibility.
Meanwhile, discussions about returning cultural artifacts grew louder. Museums worldwide faced demands for repatriation. This made me feel more conflicted about owning the pot, which I kept hidden in a box. My journey with this Maya pot reflected a larger question: Who owns history and cultural treasures? What is our responsibility to protect the heritage of all cultures?
24. What was the author’s initial reaction to the pot?
A. It sparked his imagination.
B. It made him reflect on ethics.
C. It reminded him of his uncle’s love.
D. It made him feel uneasy about ownership.
25. What is the author’s attitude toward the neglect of ethical issues in artifact trade?
A. Supportive and affirmative. B. Disapproving and critical.
C. Indifferent and unconcerned. D. Tolerant and understanding.
26. The word “mustered” in paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. wasted B. gathered C. ignored D. needed
27. The author ends the passage with two questions primarily to ________.
A. express his inner conflict clearly
B. criticize the unethical trade of artifacts
C. raise public awareness of heritage ownership
D. call for the repatriation of cultural artifacts
C
Have you ever seen something new that everyone suddenly wants, like a trendy cup? These are called fads. Unlike long-term trends that reflect societal shifts, fads are unpredictable; they appear quickly out of nowhere. Driven by novelty and a sense of exclusivity, they capture public attention rapidly but are usually short-lived, lasting only weeks or months before fading away.
Today, social media is crucial in making fads catch fire. A product can go viral in days through influencers and algorithms. Another key factor is scarcity. Limited editions or hard-to-get items create a strong sense of urgency. This “fear of scarcity” fuels obsession, often leading to impulsive purchases without careful thought.
Why do we fall for them? A primary reason is our deep desire to belong. We want to connect with a group and share experiences, seeking validation from peers. The “fear of missing out” (FOMO) intensifies this need. Additionally, our brains are wired for novelty. Encountering something new and popular triggers a sense of excitement and positive emotional experiences, which in turn drives us to follow such popular trends willingly.
However, this excitement fades quickly, often leaving us with unnecessary items, contributing to overconsumption and waste. To avoid this, a “cooling-off period” before buying is wise. Ask yourself: “Do I really want this, or just what it represents?” Understanding marketing tactics like scarcity helps. By thinking critically, we can resist fleeting fads and make more meaningful, sustainable choices.
28. What is the main difference between fads and trends?
A. Fads are the only popular phenomenon driven by a sense of novelty.
B. Fads are short-lived in development while trends are long-term.
C. Fads reflect societal shifts while trends have no such connection.
D. Trends appear quickly out of nowhere whereas fads rise gradually.
29. What effect do social media and scarcity create together?
A. They make consumers think twice before making a purchase.
B. They guide consumers to focus on products’ practical value.
C. They cause consumers’ immediate and impulsive purchasing.
D. They make almost all online products go viral in a short time.
30. What is a key psychological reason people follow fads?
A. They desire to get validation and recognition from their peers.
B. They need social connection and favor new popular things.
C. They find new popular things can calm their inner anxiety.
D. They believe FOMO is the only way to connect with others.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this?
A. To predict the next popular fad.
B. To blame social media for all fads.
C. To get readers to buy more limited editions.
D. To explain fads and suggest thoughtful buying.
D
The famous marshmallow test, where children are asked to choose one marshmallow now or two later, may reveal more than willpower. Recent research suggests the ability to delay gratification (满足) could help protect against cognitive (认知) decline. This skill strengthens the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning and reasoning. Just as regular physical exercise helps maintain muscle strength, regularly practising delayed gratification may help maintain cognitive functions throughout life. Over time, it will definitely build up mental resilience.
Resisting immediate rewards stimulates “cool” controlling strategies in the prefrontal cortex, while giving in to temptation involves emotional decision-making areas. Regular practice of these “cool” strategies contributes to cognitive reserve, which highlights the importance of mental stimulation. This regular practice will potentially delay cognitive decline. It’s not just about willpower, but the ability to plan for the future, which is essential to make healthier lifestyle choices that benefit brain health.
These skills can be developed at any age. While early childhood lays the foundation for delayed gratification, adults can strengthen self-control through consistent practice. Strategies like setting specific goals enhance these abilities. Studies show those who regularly practice self-control tend to maintain better cognitive functions as they age, demonstrating stronger problem-solving skills.
Physical activity matters in this relationship. Research shows that higher physical activity is linked to better cognitive function, especially in older adults. Delaying gratification helps maintain regular exercise habits, creating a positive feedback circle that supports brain health. The more we practice delayed gratification, the more we strengthen our brain’s ability of self-control and protect against future cognitive decline.
To develop these skills, start with small delays and gradually increase the waiting period. Set achievable goals and practice mindfulness to manage emotional urges. It’s never too late to start building cognitive resilience, and the small choices we make today can have a lasting impact on our mental health in the long term.
32. How does the author illustrate delayed gratification in paragraph 1?
A By defining concepts.
B. By giving descriptions.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By conducting surveys.
33. What’s the function of practicing “cool” controlling strategies regularly?
A. Enhancing cognitive reserve.
B. Arousing emotional awareness.
C. Developing temptation resistance.
D. Boosting willpower performance.
34. How can adults improve their problem-solving skills?
A. By building physical fitness gradually.
B. By exercising self-control consistently.
C. By making feedback circles immediately.
D. By establishing major objectives successfully.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Delayed gratification benefits brain health.
B. Physical activity increases muscle strength.
C. Waiting period influences cognitive function.
D. Positive mindfulness manages emotional drive.

第二节 (满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Five years ago I had a nine-to-five job, and I usually commuted to work by bus. Those long, tiring hours of traveling were always annoying. But one day, it was healing.
It was a warm March evening, and I’d just taken a seat on the bus that would take me home. I sat in the third row, by the window, on the driver’s side. It was nearly 6:00 p.m., but the bus was not yet full and the driver gave no indication that he intended to get the bus on the road anytime soon.
A middle-aged woman took a seat opposite me. She was crying. Not speaking to anyone in particular, she tearfully narrated (叙述) her story.
She had come to the city to visit her daughter. On the way to the terminal, a thief had snatched one of her bags. It had contained half of the money she’d brought with her. The other half was rolled in a handkerchief and hidden under her blouse, so she fortunately still had some money left.
The bus conductor, driver, and other passengers listened to her tale. After a few minutes, she stopped crying, removed some cheese bread from her bag, and began to eat, still looking worried.
An old man in old and worn-out clothes got on the bus. He sat in the seat directly in front of the woman.
After a few minutes, all seats were taken. The driver got behind the wheel and started the engine. The bus conductor collected tickets and began asking us where we were getting off. When he came to the old man’s seat, he became suspicious and asked the old man whether he had any money. The old man admitted that he did not. He explained that he had spent all his money this morning when he’d accidentally got on the wrong bus and now he was trying to go home.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式作答。
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus.

【66题答案】
【答案】Possible version 1 (110 words):
Should Music Classes Be Offered to Senior 3 Students?
As a Senior 3 student, I firmly believe that music classes should be offered to us because they’re not only beneficial but also essential, despite the demanding academic workload.
Firstly, music classes provide a much-needed mental break. They help us to relax and recharge, which, in turn, promotes focus and productivity when we return to our academic assignments. Secondly, music classes foster our creativity and emotional well-being, balancing the logical focus of subjects like math. This balance contributes to our intellectual and emotional growth.
In conclusion, music classes are not a distraction but a vital part of education. They benefit our mental health, contributing to an all-round development of education.
Possible version 2 (120 words):
Should Music Classes Be Offered to Senior 3 Students?
As a Senior 3 student, I believe that while music classes are enjoyable, they’re not essential during this critical year. Our top priority should be academic success, as it directly affects our future.
Firstly, Senior 3 is an extremely demanding year when every minute counts. Time should be spent on core subjects like science and language to maximize learning outcomes. Music classes take up our valuable time that could be better spent on revision or practice tests. Secondly, while music classes can help us relax, other effective stress-relief methods, like short breaks or physical exercise, provide similar benefits without compromising our study time.
In conclusion, I think music classes shouldn’t be offered to us. Instead, we should prioritize academic excellence.

【答案】例文
Upon hearing this, the bus conductor ordered the old man to get off the bus. The old man was almost in tears as he begged the bus conductor to let him take this bus home. The bus driver stood up, approached the old man, and repeated the conductor’s command to urge the old man to get off the bus. The old man rose to his feet on shaky legs and lowered his head in embarrassment. All the other passengers, including me, watched quietly the whole time.
The woman seated behind the old man was also listening and observing the incident. She stood up slowly, staring straight at the bus driver and interfered. “Stop! Can’t you see he’s only trying to go home?” Meanwhile, she reached inside her blouse, took out her remaining money, and handed the fares to the conductor. “Here is his fare and mine. Just stop giving him a hard time.” Suddenly, I found a Mona Lisa smile of peace and grace spreading across her face instead of worry.

If I teach students the self development techniques i've taught adults, I can help produce the risk of harmful mental patterns forming. I originally wrote about career skills. Then readers asked for advice on relationships, how to communicate and build trust. So I wrote about that too. Eventually I realize that everything connects back to emotional intelligence, meaning your ability to manage emotions. But this isn't just personal growth. It's how we create a Better world when we improve ourselves. We improve the lives of those around us. Everyone has struggles, some dislike responsibility, and others struggle with honesty. Personally, I could never ask others for support. In psychology, these struggles are often called shadows, or the hidden parts we try to ignore. But these shadows are just doorways to Better versions of ourselves. And trust me, facing them is often less frightening than we imagine today. We'll practice together using methods from my book.
