IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in
Show Mark’s message to Daniel (Page 40).
'We moved here 2 years ago.' vs 'We have lived here since then.'
Question :Are both true? What is the difference in focus?" (One focuses on the past action, the other on the current state).
Step 2: Rule Discovery
Timeline Activity: Draw timelines on the board.
Simple Past: Action finished. Time specified (last month, ago).
Present Perfect: Connection to now. Time unspecified or duration (so far, already).
Contrast:
1 He went to China. (He is back or not? We don't know, just stating the past event).
2 He has been to China. (He has the experience now).
3 He has gone to China. (He is there now).
Step 3: Practice
Exercise A & B: Complete conversations.
Focus on keywords: ever, never, just, yet.
I saw the movie yesterday. VS I have seen the movie so far.
Guide students to realize yesterday cuts the connection to now.
Step 4: Production
Task: Short Passage Fill-in-the-blanks.
Example:
"Dad ______ (decide) the destination yesterday. He ______ (already/book) the tickets. Last year, we ______ (go) to Beijing, but this time we ______ (choose) Chengdu."
Pair Interview: Ask your partner about their trips. Use both tenses.
1 Where did you go last summer? (Past)
