(2024·广东·中考真题)
People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.
6.Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 1?
A.Humans may not like animals. B.Scientists know nothing about it.
C.Nobody knows why this happens. D.A new study adds chickens to the list.

A.B.C.D.
8.How did the volunteers help with the research?
A.By listening to the chicken calls. B.By taking care of the chickens.
C.By finding food for the chickens. D.By making the chickens happy.
9.What does the underlined word “identify” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Control. B.Hide. C.Recognize. D.Hurt.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
11.Where is this passage most probably from?
A.A storybook. B.An art magazine.
C.A guidebook. D.A science magazine.
12.How can a certain kind of ants find their way?
A.By imagining the way. B.By counting their steps.
C.By bringing food together D.By walking through a forest.

A.Secret. B.Choice. C.Reason. D.Feeling.
14.What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?
A.To help animals. B.To travel at night.
C.To keep city lights on. D.To develop unusual abilities.
15.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Birds’ Sense of Light B.Fish’s Sense of Smell
C.Animals’ Sense of Direction D.Animals’ Sense of Magnetic Field

Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure(探险)in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventure of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples(样本)from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach——only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought himself could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventures to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme(极端的)conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me, what matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

(2025·广东珠海·三模)Satellites will be able to get a new view and find out the thickness of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean all year round. This will help scientists keep a closer eye on sea-ice melting, and predict the real influences of the earth’s warmer climate.
The European Space Agency’s CryoSat-2 task measures the thickness of ice in the polar Arctic Ocean. The satellite can find out the height difference between the top of the ice and the water surface. It sends a pulse of microwaves (a type of light energy) towards the surface. When the energy hits ice or water, the refection moves back to the satellite, allowing scientists________.
However, in summer, pools of melted water on top of the ice are mistaken by the radar because they can look like the ocean surface. This means that between May and September—the key period of ice melting results from CrySst-2 have been changeable.
To get around this problem, Dr Jack Landy and his partners from the Arctic University of Norway have used an artificial intelligence (AI) system to train the radar to know the difference between open ocean and melted water. AI is a computer system that can do things that usually require human wisdom. The researchers have been able to go back through the years, and work out how the thickness of sea ice has changed over time.
Because of climate change (the long term changes in world weather) caused mainly by human activities, scientists think that the Arctic Ocean is headed for ice-free summers. This will influence many animals, such as polar bears and walruses, as well as people who live in the area. However, predictions about when this might happen are quite wrong. “We need to pay attention to those predictions so we’re a lot more certain about what’s going to happen and when.” Dr. Landy told BBC News. The new information could help scientists, better prepare for, or even prevent, the worst results of climate change.
1.What does the underlined word “melting” mean?
A.quickly appearing B.becoming hotter.
C.becoming colder. D.slowly disappearing.
2.Which of the following can be put into “________” in the second paragraph?
A.to stop working out the problem
B.to change their idea about climate change
C.to continue studying how climate changes
D.to work out how high the ice is above water
3.The changeable results from CryoSat-2 are shown ________.
A.in spring B.in summer C.in autumn D.in winter
4.What does Dr. Landy think of the predictions?
A.Important. B.Impossible. C.Interesting. D.Wonderful.
5.The best title for the passage may be “________”.
A.What is the artificial intelligence system?
B.Climate change comes from human activities
C.Satellites help scientists predict the influences of warmer climate
D.The Arctic Ocean is headed for ice-free summers

(2025·广东东莞·一模)Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or lasting humid (湿热的) weather?
Hui nan tian is a special weather condition in southern China. It normally appears in spring when the temperature begins to rise and the humidity quickly increases. Before it arrives, there are usually a few cold days, with a temperature below 12°C. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature rises, creating a lot of water vapour (蒸汽). Small water drops can be seen on windows and walls. For example, if the temperature is below 12°C from March 7th to 9th but suddenly rises on March 10th, hui nan tian will appear on March 10th.
During hui nan tian, the humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet and sofas can get moldy (发霉的). Things like televisions may breakdown when they get wet inside, which can be dangerous for people to turn them on. It can also make people feel tired and sick. Catching a cold is prevalent during this time, as the temperature changes quickly. Although the weather troubles people a lot, for nature, it can be helpful. Thanks to the humid weather, plants can grow better with enough water and warmer air.
To cut down on the trouble caused by the lasting humid weather, scientists suggest that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening. At the same time, they should use an air conditioner to take away water from the air. It’s also useful to put newspapers on the floor, on tables and at the door to take in water and wet air.
6.Where is this passage probably from?
A.A guide book. B.A story book.

8.In which of the following conditions is hui nan tian most likely to appear on the 10th?
A.B.C. D.
9.Which word has the same meaning as the underlined word “prevalent”?
A.Strange. B.Common. C.Easy. D.Difficult.
10.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Humid Weather B.The Warm Air Rises

(2025·广东佛山·一模)When we talk about smart animals, what comes to your mind? Your answer may be dogs or monkeys. Now, you can add one more to the list: sheep.
Sheep has powerful face-recognition abilities. Researchers from the University of Cambridge trained eight sheep to recognize the faces of four famous people and pick them out from two different photos. One was a photo of an unknown person and the other was one of the four famous people. If the sheep chose the right photo, it could get food but nothing if they did it wrong. After some time, the sheep could connect the food with the correct photos and make the right choice 8 out of 10 times.
Then the researchers gave them another task to see if the sheep could recognize the same person from a different angle. The photos showed only the left face or the right face. The animals were still able to recognize them, though their performance dropped by about 15%.
In the last test, the researchers showed photos of their trainers along with a number of other people’s faces. Without any training, the sheep could pick out their trainers 7 out of 10 times.
It is not surprising why sheep are smart. ▲ That means they can be useful models to help us understand brain diseases like Huntington’s disease. The study offers another way to learn how these abilities change, especially in sheep who carry the gene mutation (基因突变) that causes Huntington’s disease.
11.Why does the writer mention dogs and monkeys in the first paragraph?

(2025·广东湛江·二模)Everyone has a better self in their hearts. But for many people, it is hard for them to make a change for that, especially a big one. Once we fail in that, we are les likely to do well in the future. Success lead to success, and failure repeats failure. But by taking small steps, we can all be a better one. Here are three practical examples.
Tidying your house. No matter how large or small a house you have, you may often delay the “spring clean” again and again until the summer comes. A big clean is seldom enjoyable, but you can tell yourself, “Today, I will do the bedroom, and nothing more.” or “I will do the chairs this morning, and the tables this afternoon.” It will probably take you longer, but it gets done.
Sporting achievement. To many people around the world, running a marathon (马拉松) is usually something impossible. But anything is simply one small step after another. Those great runners often repeat “Just to the top of that hill” or “Just one more mile” over and over — until one mile becomes 26.2 miles.
Changing your character. There’s a lot of truth in the power of habit. It takes small changes step by step. So, try to do one kind thing before lunch. Do another one before you go to bed. Over time, you will easily and habitually (习惯地) do kind things one day.
▲ So is making changes. Slowly, slowly and over a long time, great things can be done.
16.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Everyone can be a better one. B.Everyone has a big dream.
C.Failure is the mother of success. D.There’s no way to success.
17.What does the underlined word “delay” probably mean?
A.Hear of. B.Put off. C.Put up. D.Look at.
18.In the writer’s eyes, what makes those great runners?
A.Having good luck. B.Being kind to others.
C.Getting help from others. D.Sticking to what they want.
19.Which of the following can be put in “________” in Paragraph 5?
A.Practice makes perfect. B.It is never too old to learn.
C.Rome was not built in a day. D.All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
20.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Become Better Little by Little B.Live a Successful Life
C.Make a Difference to the World D.Change Your Character

(2025·广东茂名·一模)As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t? A new study has found that likes and dislikes from other people could be a reason. According to the research, people who show a clear dislike while eating vegetables can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it influence a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating carrots. The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neither happy nor sad, or look disgusted.
The study found that after people watched those videos of people with disgusted faces, they began to like carrots less. However, when someone had a smile while eating carrots, people watching them did not like carrots more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food? The team said they hoped to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.
21.How did the young women help do the study?
A.By eating carrots.
B.By cooking carrots for the study.
C.By watching videos of others eating some vegetables.

B.It’s necessary for us to include different kinds of food in our daily meals.
C.However, children may act differently when they are having food they don’t like.
D.In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
24.What may the team do further study on?
A.The ways to understand people’s facial expressions.
B.The children’s eating habits.
C.The influences of children’s behavior.

(2024·广东佛山·一模)Language is important both because of what it communicates and how it does the communication. The power of language is so strong that it shows how language can actually influence the way we think. To broaden language is to broaden the ability to think. We can see this in children, whose thinking develops gradually hand in hand with the language.
So how to use the power of language: turning words into shapes. Professors have found that our subconscious (潜意识的) mind explains what it hears. The words that come out of our mouths, create the reality—for better or worse. Unfortunately, it’s often worse as we destroy our hope of success simply by using negative language that influences our opinions and kills our confidence. What you think directly influences how you feel and how you behave. So if you think you’re a loser, you’ll feel like a loser, Then, you’ll act like a loser, which strengthens your belief that you must be a loser.
Creating a more positive outlook (看法) can lead to better outcomes. That’s not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But positive thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful outcome. To build self-confidence, you have to change the way you speak. Remember them: Try to use positive language. Take actions quickly. Have your opinions. And don’t often say sorry to other people unless you are wrong. Words have magical powers. They can either bring the greatest happiness or the deepest despair (绝望).
36.Why is language important to children according to Paragraph 1?

(2025·广东·模拟预测)Have you ever used a needle (针) and thread (线) to sew (缝纫)? What did you think of it?
When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother’s sister’s house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, so I went outside to play in the yard when they all sat around the kitchen table talking.
After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were doing. On the kitchen table was a large homemade quilt that was still being sewn together. Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great-aunt sewed a little piece of cloth onto the quilt. I looked over at the quilt and saw a piece of thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.
“No!” It was my grandmother’s voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever remember her yelling at me. Seeing the scared look on my face, she smiled and showed me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread weaved (迂回穿行) in and out of the different pieces of cloth.
It made its way from one end of the quilt to the other. If I had pulled it, I would have pulled the quilt apart and ruined (毁掉) hours of work.
As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that thread in the quilt. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help hold everything together. That’s our purpose — to help and support the people around us.
41.What was the writer doing while others were talking?
A.Sewing the quilt. B.Sitting in a chair. C.Pulling the thread. D.Playing in the yard.
42.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “yelling”?

44.What would happen if the writer pulled the thread?
A.The quilt would be pulled apart. B.His mother would be happy to see that.
C.His grandmother might praise him for doing that. D.The thread would make pieces of cloth together.
45.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Remembering the people around us. B.Helping the people around us.
C.Finding out what our purpose is. D.Learning to work without other people.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced an important achievement in deep earth exploration China’s first 10,000-meter scientific exploration well (井), named Shenditake 1, was successfully completed at a depth of 10,910 meters underground in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.
Humans have achieved great things by exploring the sky, the sea, and the earth. After the “Chang’e Lunar Mission” explored space and the “Jiaolong Submersible” dived deep into the sea, China has now made big progress in exploring deep into the earth. Shenditake 1, in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, known as the “Sea of Death”, has set a new Asian record for deep earth drilling (钻探), and the well was drilled using China’s self-developed tools.
The digging process was full of challenges. From the surface to 10,000 meters, it took only 279 days, but the final 910 meters took more than 300 days to complete due to hard conditions under the ground. The well met many difficulties such as tool failures, holes falling down, and heavy loads. However, with the support of new technology and tools, Chinese engineers overcame these challenges and achieved this historic breakthrough.
This success marks an important step forward in China’s deep earth drilling engineering. Shenditake 1 is a proud symbol of China’s scientific and technological progress.

【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B 4.A 5.C
【导语】本文是一篇关于卫星技术帮助科学家监测和预测北冰洋海冰融化及气候变暖影响的文章。
1.词义猜测题。根据文章第一段“Satellites will be able to get a new view and find out the thickness of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean all year round. This will help scientists keep a closer eye on sea-ice melting, and predict the real influences of the earth’s warmer climate.”
根据文章第二段“The satellite can find out the height difference between the top of the ice and the water surface. It sends a pulse of microwaves (a type of light energy) towards the surface. When the energy hits ice or water, the refection moves back to the satellite, allowing scientists...”可知,卫星能够发现冰面顶部和水面之间的高度差,它向表面发射一束微波(一种光能),当能量撞击冰或水时,反射波会返回到卫星,这允许科学家们……结合选项,D选项“to work out how high the ice is above water(计算出冰在水面上的高度)”符合语境,即科学家们可以通过反射波计算出冰在水面上的高度。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“However, in summer, pools of melted water on top of the ice are mistaken by the radar because they can look like the ocean surface. This means that between May and September—the key period of ice melting results from CryoSat-2 have been changeable.”可知,在夏季,冰面上的融水被雷达误认为是海洋表面,这意味着在5月至9月这个海冰融化的关键时期,CryoSat-2的结果是可变的。故选B。
4.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“However, predictions about when this might happen are quite wrong. ‘We need to pay attention to those predictions so we’re a lot more certain about what’s going to happen and when.’ Dr. Landy told BBC News.” 故选A。

C.There are usually a few cold days before it.
D.It is a special weather condition in the north.

C.Getting help from others. D.Sticking to what they want.

It shows that China has the ability to achieve great things, just as it has done in deep space and deep sea exploration. This achievement will inspire more scientists and engineers to continue exploring the mysteries of our planet.
