“I have left to follow my dream of knitting sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office... until my penguin friends are happy.” Weeks ago, a teacher in the UK sent this email to her Chinese student, and it soon became popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia came up with the idea.
The activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) near Phillip Island in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were put in danger.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep them warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
Luckily, the idea worked. Soon, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. This time, the sweaters helped save 96 percent of the penguins in the area.
However, some bird protection groups have questioned if these sweaters might put more stress on penguins. In answer to this, the foundation said that the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.

Australian kids made history by sending life-giving algae (藻类) to the International Space Station (ISS). They hoped to create a greener future on Earth. Students from Casula High School cheered loudly at 1:29 pm on November 5, 2024. A SpaceX spaceship successfully lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying two boxes of algae.
The experiment made by students from Casula High School left Earth on the spaceship for a 30-day space task. The students wanted to test if algae can grow faster in space. If their idea is correct, space-grown algae could be used for food, medicine, and biofuels (生物燃料) during space travel—and to improve environments on Earth and Mars.

Americans are showing more interest in keeping unusually small cows, goats and other small farm animals. These animals are cute and they require less food and space. People who farm for fun are known as hobby farmers. They are looking for animals to raise without difficulty and such small farm animals are suitable. Some just like the idea of having a little pig or a small sheep as a pet.
Animal keepers say sales of these little farm animals have grown over the past few years. More people started raising chickens at home for fun and fresh eggs. Like chickens, small farm animals interested beginners who wanted to try a countryside lifestyle.
“A lot of people don’t have a large piece of land, but they just need a small area to keep a small cow or a few small goats,” said Brian Gazda. He has a small farm in Eastern Idaho and runs a channel called “Hobby Farm Guys” with two friends.
Martin Fish said social media has brought attention to small farm animals. Customers who started out by raising a few chickens may want to have more choices such as small pigs and goats. “They are seen as part of the family,” Fish said.
Some keepers of small farm animals turn their hobbies into money-making activities. They show the animals to visitors, let visitors feed the animals, and write about their farming experience.
“But newcomers to these activities need to weigh (权衡) the good and bad results of hobby farming,” Gazda and other hobby farmers said. Among the problems is the rising cost of small farm animals…

The algae experiment was a chance for students to work with top technology. Lexie Rouen is a teacher from Casula High School. She said students were excited to work on real world experiments that could actually help their future. She added, “Students were amazed because the experiment was far beyond normal classroom projects.”
Over three years, students from Casula High School have met experts like Australia’s first woman astronaut and NASA scientists. They also used high-tech space tools. They worked together on the algae experiment. They did practice tests on Earth to find the best conditions for algae growth before the spaceship was sent.
“We used to say the sky is the limit (极限) for our talented high school students.
Like chickens small farm animals interested beginners who wanted to try a countryside lifestyle.

Recycling is good for the environment. It can also do good to a community in surprising ways. Brian, a 15-year-old boy, knows this well. In 2020, he started a community recycling program to offer help to the football clubs in his hometown, Wyre. It now has 3,000 participants (参与者).
When Brian was 11, he played football with Fleetwood Town F.C. The club was new and needed money to travel to Premier League. Brian came up with a plan. “There are bottles always thrown around the road,” he said. In Wyre, these can be collected for money. With his father’s help, Brian started a bottle drive. Since then, Brian’s recycling effort has raised 35,000 pounds and helped at least 20 local youth groups. It has also stopped more than 200,000 bottles from littering the roadside and polluting Wyre’s lakes and rivers. “It’s kept our community a lot cleaner,” Brian says.
In 2023, Brian won the Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize for young heroes. The prize goes to kids and teenagers working to help others and protecting Planet Earth. “I’m happy to know that all these clubs and kids around the community are benefiting.” Brian says, when he was asked about all he’s finished with his cleanup effort.
Brian believes everyone can and should do something useful. “Just do a little bit to help make the world a little bit better,” he says. “Be creative,” he adds. “Have an idea and build on it.”
