Jason Haney is a construction worker from Indiana. When he began his current job as foreman on a site opposite a children’s hospital, this awesome dad and hobby artist had a brilliant idea.
Haney noticed that many of the sick kids at the Memorial Children’s Hospital in South Bend could not go outside, and his construction site was the only view from their hospital rooms. So together with his teenage daughter, Haney built a 2.5 meter tall plywood (胶合板) cutout of Waldo from the famous Where’s Waldo? books.
Every day, the workers hide Waldo in a different spot on the construction site, giving the children a new challenge. As soon as Haney finds out that the kids have found Waldo, the cutout gets moved to a new secret hiding spot and the game begins again.
Heidi Prescott, a spokeswoman for Beacon Health System, which runs the hospital, said the project began one winter when the workers put up an inflatable (可充气的) snowman for the children. The kids loved the idea and from there it quickly developed into the Waldo cutout.
“It didn’t take long to catch on, the kids whether they are in the rooms or in a play area, they look across as soon as they get to the window,” Prescott told ABC News. “They will look all over the building, point and exclaim (惊叫) ‘I found him!’”
Haney, meanwhile, simply enjoys knowing that he can brighten the children’s day and make them forget that they are in hospital for a few minutes. He has said over and over again, “All I did this for was to make the kids smile.”
Haney even created a Facebook group where he leaves clues as to where Waldo might be hiding and the children can post photos of their findings. The project has been a huge success, with hundreds of people sharing photos of Waldo and happy parents thanking Haney for making an otherwise difficult visit to the hospital just that little bit more enjoyable.
4. Why did Jason Haney create the Waldo cutout?
A. To bring joy to sick kids in a nearby hospital.
B. To raise public awareness of child healthcare.
C. To practice his hobby of art with his daughter.
D. To attract more attention to his construction site.
5. What can we learn about the Waldo game from paragraph 3?
A. The game ends when all kids find Waldo.
B. The game continues by relocating Waldo.
C. The kids search for Waldo on the fixed spot.
D. The kids begin by having fun hiding Waldo.
6. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Haney posted photos online to encourage the ill kids.
B. Haney’s next project will be more successful than the Waldo one.
C. Parents think the Waldo project makes hospital stays easier for kids.
D. The Facebook group is only used to share hints about Waldo’s location.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Jason Haney?
A. Talented and humorous. B. Kind-hearted and creative.
C. Committed and modest. D. Open-minded and considerate.

Scientists at MIT have managed to change ordinary spinach (菠菜) plants into natural sensors which can find chemicals used in bombs. The secret to giving spinach these special powers is nanotech (纳米技术), which is a scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are extremely tiny.
“Ordinary spinach plants can be found everywhere and easy to store; like other plants, they normally take in carbon dioxide gas,” the scientists say. “But actually they can sense small changes of soil and water potential and respond to them. If we tap into this point, there is a wealth of information to access.” That’s what the scientists use to power their tiny experiments.
For this experiment, the scientists placed two different kinds of tiny nano-materials into spinach plants. To embed (植入) them into the plants, the scientists put a liquid containing them on the bottom of the plant’s leaves. As part of its natural process, the spinach plant pulls water through its roots and into its leaves. If the water contains certain chemicals used in bombs, the tiny sensors in the leaves make the nano-tubes, which, along with the sensors, were placed into the spinach plant before by the scientists, produce a slightly special kind of light. By watching the plant constantly using a camera attached to a computer, the scientists set up a system that can send a warning email if chemicals from explosives are found in the water.
The computer the scientists used is about the size of a playing card. They say that in the future, their system could even use a cell phone with its camera changed slightly. Discovering chemicals used in bombs is just one of the many uses the researchers are exploring. They have used such plants to discover several other dangerous chemicals as well. From their point of view, there’s no doubt that in the future, such systems could give farmers specific information about the health of the land and water on their farms.
8. Why do the scientists use spinach plants to do the experiment?
A. They are common in the daily life. B. They are environmentally responsive.
C. They are small in size and easy to store. D. They are efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide.
9. What’s the function of the nano-tubes placed into spinach plants?
A. Fixing the tiny sensors. B. Containing the liquid.
C. Controlling the camera. D. Giving off plant light.
10. What can you infer about the system from the last paragraph?
A. Researchers are confident in its agricultural potential.
B. Future success depends on specialized phone cameras.
C. Farmers have received farm-specific environmental data.
D. The computer can be sized according to scientists’ needs.
11 What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Nanotech Helps Spinach Grow Healthily B. Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger
C. Spinach Delivers Warnings via Nanotech D. Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
D
A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry Ⅷ a good king?” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom nonplussed and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be approachable, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will attract many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine (疫苗), is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful? How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill? Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem, a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive (直觉的) assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
12. What does the underlined word “nonplussed” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Misguided. B. Amused. C. Confused. D. prepared.
13. What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author?
A. It covers various topics. B. It casts light on math thoughts.
C. It satisfies maths professionals. D. It makes sense to ordinary people.
14. Why does the author mention Bayes’s theorem in paragraph 3?
A. To prove the reliability of intuition. B. To reveal the book’s academic nature.
C. To underline the deep truth of judgement. D. To demonstrate Spiegelhalter’s writing approach.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. A guidebook to teaching mathematics. B. A book review on understanding probability.
C. A statistical analysis of new vaccine safety. D. An introduction to a master’s program in maths.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Paris is an ideal travel destination with its food, wine, shopping complexes and sightseeing spots. ____16____ Actually it is possible to have a good time without spending a lot.
Forget the large international hotels in the centre. Instead, get off the main streets. There are many hotels just two blocks away from the main tourist attractions, which cost as little as US $35 a night each, including breakfast.
____17____ But who needs more when the point of the trip is to be out in the streets? The real bonus is living among French people and experiencing their life.
Seek out small, local cafes when you want a meal. They are at every street corner in the less fancy parts of town. Choose from the fixed-price dinner menus posted outside these cafes. Many have prices as low as US $9 or US $10. Drinks with meals are more expensive, especially beer and quality wine. But there are some reasonable alternatives. House wine is good: perhaps a couple of dollars per carafe (喇叭瓶). Coffee, thick and lovely, costs US $2.50 a cup. ____18____
Getting around Paris is easy and inexpensive. Walking is the best way to feel the street-life but when you start to tire, take the train. Subway tickets for anywhere across the city cost around a dollar a trip and even less if you buy a multiple-ticket book. ____19____ All the maps and signposts are easy to understand.
____20____ Passes can be bought at major subway stations and elsewhere. The Louvre is an absolute must to visit. The Eiffel Tower gives a great view of the city for less than US $10. You can’t miss the street architecture, the surrounding atmosphere and the daily goings-on in Paris. More importantly, they cost nothing or little to explore and experience.
A. The system is quick and efficient.
B. The breakfast features a local flavor.
C. But some people are worried about the high cost.
D. The admissions to Paris’ attractions are not costly.
E. Quality wine and tasty food are tough on the budget.
F. The rooms with small bathrooms are clean and basic.
G. That totals less than $15 per person for dinner and drinks.

The organisers have prioritised finding a good route over precise measurements, so all three races have a rather loose relationship with their stated distance.

11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Nanotech Helps Spinach Grow Healthily B. Nanotech Protects Spinach from Danger
C. Spinach Delivers Warnings via Nanotech D. Spinach Is Sensitive to Chemicals in Bombs
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11. C

A It covers various topics.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. B

Walking across campus, have you noticed the abandoned plastic bottles beside trash bins, or snack wrappers left on the ground? It is the visible carelessness that spoils our shared environment and calls for immediate reflection.
Here is our practical appeal: it is highly recommended that we consciously place waste in bins and carry reusable bottles. Not only should we stop littering, but we should also take the initiative to tidy common areas after use. Starting with these simple actions, we can set a clear example for others to follow.
