It was about 10 years ago, on a cold, gray winter day. I was walking to visit my dad. I knocked on his door and stepped into his house. Warm steam came from the kitchen. It touched my nose, and suddenly I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Nana’s special sauce—spaghetti sauce.
Growing up, Nana would make us an Italian dinner every Sunday. She would slowly cook her spaghetti sauce for hours. It always left our bellies(肚子)full, our hearts happy, and our house smelling yummy.
I sat down when Dad made me a plate. I felt like a boy again. We talked about those old times and laughed over the memories, both good and bad. And I noticed something too. I didn’t feel cold anymore. My heart was full of warmth, and my spirit was becoming light.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them both every day. Although my daughter and I both know how to make Nana’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we should. No matter how hard I try, I can never get it quite right. Maybe I am missing an ingredient. Or maybe it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. Anyway, this winter, I am going to make it again. I need its warmth. I need its goodness.
4. What brought the writer back to his childhood?
A. A cold, gray winter day.

As we all know, trees are one of the oldest plants of our Earth. They keep our air clean, make less pollution, make water cleaner and provide food and building materials. They play a significant role in our life. Humans can’t survive without trees. And just like us, trees change a lot as they grow.
At one to three years old, young trees begin to grow and learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns to keep animals from going near.
At the age of four years old, trees begin to grow at a fast pace and become strong enough to face different kinds of difficulties later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. It gives us shade and provides a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we all learn how to protect the adult tree, it will live healthily for many years.
Little by little, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, older trees are still very important in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it dies, it can be a comfortable home to small animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life. When looking at the life of a tree, we should enjoy every minute of its life and take care of the tree!

C. An adult tree can live long and well if we all learn how to protect it.
11. What’s the structure (结构) of the article? (P: Paragraph段落)

B. The same kitchen.
C. The familiar smell of the spaghetti sauce.
5. How did the writer feel after having his dad’s meal?
A. Happy and surprised. B. Warm and relaxed. C. Moved and cold.
6. According to the writer, what made the sauce taste better?
A. The ingredients.
B. The person who cooked it.
C. The love and care put into it.
7. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Unforgettable memories. B. Delicious food. C. A cold winter day
C
8. What does the underlined word “hollow” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. 干枯的 B. 空心的 C. 茁壮的
9. About the growth of the tree, which of the following is the right order (顺序)?
a. Grow very quickly. b. Become a real adult. c. Learn how to protect itself.
d. Grow older and die. e. Produce flowers and fruit.
A. b-a-c-d-e B. c-e-a-b-d C. c-a-e-b-d
10. What can we infer (推测) from this article?
A. We can find flowers and fruit on 4-year-old trees.
B Older trees can be great places for people to live.
C. An adult tree can live long and well if we all learn how to protect it.
11. What’s the structure (结构) of the article? (P: Paragraph段落)
A. B. C.

You may have heard of Robin Li. After all, Robin Li is considered “the man who competed against Google and won”, thanks to his creation of Baidu, China’s largest search engine.
Born in 1968, Li was the 4th of 5 children born to factory workers in Yangquan, Shanxi Province in China. Back then, Yangquan was an underdeveloped city that did not offer much to its people. Like most of the kids in the neighborhood, Li spent his childhood in hardships.
