Todd Toriscelli graduated from Ohio University in 1984 after studying athletic training. He later built a long and successful career (事业) working for the National Football League. After retiring earlier this year, Todd has turned his attention to supporting the next generation of professionals in the field.
“I take so much pride in Ohio,” Todd said. “It’s such a special place to me.” To express his thanks, he set up the Todd Toriscelli Endowment for Athletic Training, which will offer scholarships (奖学金) to students in the athletic training program.
As a teenager, Todd first went to the University of Akron and played football there. However, his grades were poor, and he returned home. Since no one in his family had gone to college before, his parents were still proud of him for giving it a try. That seemed like the end of that path — until a friend gave him a textbook and asked him to read it. Todd quickly became interested and decided to try college again at Ohio University.
At Ohio, Todd met Charles Vosler, then the head athletic trainer. Vosler told Todd that if he received a grade of a C or lower during his first term, he would be out of the program. Todd didn’t just meet that goal—he surpassed it with a 4.0 grade point average that term. He said Vosler’s warning was the best thing anyone ever said to him, because it challenged him to do better.
From then on, Todd fully threw himself into athletic training. He worked hard in class and gained hands-on experience every afternoon. With the help from teachers and classmates, he learned how to study better and grow professionally.
“Without Ohio, and without Charles Vosler having faith (信任) in me and giving me a chance, none of my career success ever would have happened,” Todd said. “That’s why I’m just so honored to come back to campus.”
24. Why did Todd start the Todd Toriscelli Endowment for Athletic Training?
A. To give back to Ohio University. B. To honor his professional sports career.
C. To remember a respected football player. D. To raise money for a new training program.
25. What made Todd decide to apply to Ohio University?
A. A good job opportunity. B. A book from his friend.
C. His parents’ suggestion. D. The college’s scholarship.
26. Which of the following best describes Charles Vosler as a trainer?
A. Strict. B. Kind. C. Patient. D. Energetic.
27. How does Todd probably feel about Charles Vosler?
A. Regretful. B. Thankful. C. Confused. D. Frightened.

When engineers design infrastructure like roads and bridges, they depend on hydrological (水文的) models to predict (预测) the likelihood of floods, such as those that occur once in 50 or 100 years. Engineers test these models using historical data to ensure they work correctly under observed conditions. However, new research from Cornell University shows that, due to climate change, floods are happening more often, which makes these traditional models less reliable (可靠的).
“This raises some key questions: How much should we trust our models based on historical data when predicting future events? And which models are better suited for long-term water infrastructure planning?” said Sandeep Poudel, the first author of new Cornell research.
To answer these questions, the researchers first developed a “virtual hydrolab” experiment. They used 1,000 years of simulated data, which included extreme events like floods and droughts, as well as daily weather data such as temperature, rainfall, and runoff. They then tested six different flood prediction models to see which could best predict outcomes in both present and future climate conditions.
The models fell into three groups: traditional models based on physical equations about hydrological processes; AI models that take in all of that data and make predictions based on learned input and output relationships; and a hybrid model combining the traditional and AI models. They found that while there were large uncertainties among all the models tested, the AI model performed best.
Despite the success of the AI model in this study, Poudel warned against throwing out traditional models. “Instead of thinking we can predict exactly how floods will change in each area, we should understand the limits of our models and look for patterns that appear in larger regions,” Poudel said. “This wider view will provide planners with a more reliable guide for designing infrastructure and protecting communities in a warming climate.”
28. Why are traditional flood models less reliable now?
A They are limited to coastal city planners.
B. They are designed mainly for city bridges.
C. They are never shared among researchers.
D. They are based on past climate conditions.
29. What is the purpose of the “virtual hydrolab” experiment?
A. To compare various AI models.
B. To collect data about temperatures.
C. To test flood prediction models.
D. To check the water levels of a river.
30. What does Poudel suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Working with local guides.
B. Taking a broader view.
C. Sounding an early warning.
D. Asking planners for help.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Rethinking Risk Management.
B. Uncovering the Downside of AI.
C. Engineers Lead Flood Control.
D. AI Improves Flood Predictions.

The number of young children who are obese (肥胖的) or extremely obese is going down, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is the first national study to suggest that obesity among preschoolers may have begun to decline.
To understand the finding, it helps to know how obesity is defined. Health experts determine whether an adult is obese by the height/weight ratio called the body mass index (BMI). In adults, someone with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. However, determining whether a child is obese is more complex (复杂的). If a child’s BMI falls at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex, the child is considered obese. A child whose BMI is at or above 120 percent of the 95th percentile is considered extremely obese. Or, as Heidi Blanck, one of the study’s authors, explains: “A three-year-old boy who is 37.7 inches tall and weighs 37 pounds would be considered obese. If that same boy weighs 44 pounds or more, he would be considered extremely obese.
Obesity rates among preschoolers rose sharply in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1998, about 13% of children aged 2 — 4 were obese, and less than 2% were extremely obese. The problem became worse and reached its highest point in 2003. That year, 15.21% of children aged 2 — 4 were obese and 2.22% were extremely obese. But in 2010, the obesity rate dropped to 14.94% and the rate of extreme obesity to 2.07%. “We consider this change small but encouraging,” says Blanck.
This new report doesn’t specifically indicate one exact cause for the slight decline in obesity rates, but Sanjay Gupta, lead author of the study, believes growing awareness about childhood obesity among parents, health professionals and communities has played a role. He points out that an increase in breastfeeding may also have worked.
32. What does the underlined word “decline” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Fall. B. Beat.
C. Wave. D. Cheat.
33. Why does the author mention BMI?
A. To explain why children gain weight fast.
B. To highlight a practical treatment program.
C. To show how a child’s obesity is measured.
D. To stress children’s body weight differences.
34. What was the percentage of obese preschoolers in 2010?
A. 13.20%. B. 14.94%.
C. 15.21%. D. 17.01%.
35. What does Gupta intend to say in the last paragraph?
A. Why obesity has increased among children.
B. Why parents’ attitude to health has changed.
C. What helped reduce obesity in preschoolers.
D. What played a key role in children’s growth.

Jason had never enjoyed writing. In fact, writing class was the time when he feared most at school. Whenever the English teacher asked the students to write, Jason’s heart began to beat faster. While others started writing, Jason often sat still, staring at the blank page. Ideas seemed to disappear the moment he picked up his pen, and he worried about making mistakes.
One afternoon, after class, Jason was asked to stay behind by his English teacher, Ms. Green. As the classroom slowly emptied, Jason walked to her desk with his head down, expecting criticism (批评). Instead, Ms. Green handed back his exercise book and said quietly, “Your writing is short, but your thoughts are clear.” Jason looked up in surprise. No teacher had ever said that to him before.
Ms. Green did not give him a long speech. “Try writing a little every day,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be good. Just write what you are thinking.” Jason nodded, though he was not sure he could really follow her advice.
The following weeks were not easy. Jason still crossed out many sentences and often felt unhappy with his work. Several times, he wanted to give up again. However, Ms. Green always returned his writing with short notes in the margins (空白处). She focused on his ideas instead of his mistakes. Gradually, Jason became less afraid of writing.
A few months later, Ms. Green announced (宣布) a school writing competition in class. The moment Jason heard the word “competition”, he lowered his head Taking part in a writing competition sounded impossible to him. After class, Ms. Green stopped him and asked, “Why not give it a try?” Jason did not answer at once.
That evening, sitting alone at his desk, Jason opened his notebook again. He thought about the small changes he had noticed in himself in the past months. After a long silence, he picked up his pen.

A. Regretful. B. Thankful. C. Confused. D. Frightened.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. A 27. B
【解析】

A. They are limited to coastal city planners.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. B 31. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍气候变化使传统洪水预测模型可靠性下降,康奈尔大学研究通过实验对比不同模型,发现AI模型表现最佳并给出相关建议。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Engineers test these models using historical data to ensure they work correctly under observed conditions. However, new research from Cornell University shows that, due to climate change, floods are happening more often, which makes these traditional models less reliable.(工程师们使用历史数据测试这些模型,以确保它们在观测条件下正常工作。然而,康奈尔大学的新研究表明,由于气候变化,洪水发生得越来越频繁,这使得这些传统模型的可靠性降低)”可知,传统洪水模型基于历史数据(过去的气候条件),而气候变化导致洪水频发,因此这些模型现在变得不那么可靠。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“To answer these questions, the researchers first developed a “virtual hydrolab” experiment. They used 1,000 years of simulated data, which included extreme events like floods and droughts, as well as daily weather data such as temperature, rainfall, and runoff. They then tested six different flood prediction models to see which could best predict outcomes in both present and future climate conditions.(为了回答这些问题,研究人员首先开发了一个“虚拟水文实验室”实验。他们使用了1000年的模拟数据,包括洪水和干旱等极端事件,以及温度、降雨量和径流量等日常气象数据。然后,他们测试了六种不同的洪水预测模型,以看看哪种模型能最好地预测当前和未来气候条件下的结果)”可知,“虚拟水文实验室”实验的目的是测试不同的洪水预测模型。故选C项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Instead of thinking we can predict exactly how floods will change in each area, we should understand the limits of our models and look for patterns that appear in larger regions,” Poudel said. “This wider view will provide planners with a more reliable guide for designing infrastructure and protecting communities in a warming climate.(普德尔说:“与其认为我们能准确预测每个地区的洪水将如何变化,不如我们应该了解我们模型的局限性,并寻找在更大区域出现的模式。这种更广阔的视角将为规划者在气候变暖的情况下设计基础设施和保护社区提供更可靠的指导。”)”可知,普德尔在最后一段建议采取更广阔的视角。故选B项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章开篇指出传统洪水预测模型因气候变化变得不可靠,随后介绍研究人员通过“虚拟水文实验室”实验测试六种洪水预测模型,发现AI模型表现最佳,最后给出相关建议。结合第四段中的“They found that while there were large uncertainties among all the models tested, the AI model performed best.(他们发现,虽然所有测试的模型都存在很大的不确定性,但AI模型的表现最佳)”可知,本文核心围绕AI模型改善洪水预测展开。因此,“AI Improves Flood Predictions(AI改善洪水预测)”是最适合本文的标题。故选D项。

【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. C

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Jason rewrote his story several times, facing doubts but continuing to write. Each time he finished a paragraph, he read it aloud and made small changes. Some sentences were cut, while others were rewritten to sound more natural. Though he still felt nervous, he did not stop when he met problems. He remembered Ms. Green’s words and focused on expressing his true ideas instead of worrying about mistakes. When he finally handed in his work the next day, Jason felt tired but calm. For the first time, he was proud that he had truly tried his best.
When the competition results were posted, Jason rushed to Ms. Green’s office. He took a close look at the notice, where his name appeared on the list of winners. His heart beat fast as he knocked on the door. Smiling shyly, he thanked Ms. Green for her patience and encouragement over the past months. Ms. Green looked pleased and said softly, “You did this by yourself.” Walking out of the office, Jason realized that writing no longer scared him. Instead, it had become a way for him to express his thoughts.
