Prices have been rising rapidly in cities across the world, driving the cost of living higher than ever before. But not everywhere has been impacted equally. For travelers, these places can offer the same big-city convenient facilities at a much lower cost of living.
Lisbon, Portugal
As the least-expensive city in Western Europe, according to the EIU rankings, Lisbon has been a hot spot for travelers in recent years. Mercedes Zach recommends exploring the bohemian(波西米亚式的) Bairro Alto neighbourhood to uncover street art, city views and sunset gatherings with locals. In this fast-paced world, quiet moments are often spent staring at a phone screen. For those who have forgotten how to switch off and reconnect with ourselves, Deborah Alma may have just what the doctor ordered. She is the founder of The Poetry Pharmacy (药房), whose aim is to ease worry with words, allowing visitors to book poetry consultations for tailored advice or pick up a quick fix off the shelves. Last year, another Poetry Pharmacy opened its doors inside LUSH on London’s Oxford Street, seeking to bring a little calm to the capital.
Even before she had two successful “practices” under her belt, Deborah was keenly aware of the power of poetry. She noticed how it could bring people a positive change. This inspired her to become the “Emergency Poet” traveling the country in a vintage ambulance to offer poetry prescriptions (处方). The 1950s ambulance, which was bought on eBay, carried 200 poems, each with advice like “take this poem with a cup of tea” or “listen to some birdsong”.
After about a decade of mobile medicine, Deborah parked up her practice for a permanent location in Shropshire. This became the world’s first walk-in-poetry pharmacy, and — unlike the ambulance — it had central heating. From a cozy coffee corner to an inspiring physic garden, the Pharmacy is described as “a peaceful place to rest and dream”. “What happens in the shops is that people who look at pills are often buying things for others. It’s potentially a little theatre, but that act of giving and thinking about someone else is heartwarming.” The Pharmacy also provides a more personalized service. “We ask about people’s reading habits, how they relax, rather than their problems. It should be a pleasure to answer these questions,” Deborah says.
Despite never having done any online marketing, The Poetry Pharmacy has a dedicated following of creative souls, including Mark Constantine, CEO and co-founder of LUSH. We don’t know what the future holds for The Poetry Pharmacy and its founder, but one thing is certain-the next chapter is bound to be a good one!
4. How many poetry pharmacies has Deborah opened?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
5. What can possibly happen in The Poetry Pharmacy?
A. Poetic healing. B. Helping phone addicts.
C. Enjoying theatre performances. D. Discussing poetry writing.
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The shop needs some marketing. B. The shop has gained acceptance.
C. Deborah will open a new shop soon. D. Deborah has found some co-founders.
7. Which of the following best describes Deborah?
A. Creative but inconsistent. B. Conventional but warm.
C. Innovative and compassionate. D. Sociable and adventurous.

Have you ever noticed how the email icon (图标) on many computers and smartphones is of an envelope? Or how camera phones make the sound of a real camera clicking when you take a photo, even though there’s no shutter to open or close? These are examples of skeuomorphs, which are when new things take on the appearance or sound of the object they’ve replaced.
Why would new things want to look like something old? It’s all to do with human psychology. Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is through affordances — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it made using a computer or smartphone easier.
However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. Indeed, the younger generation don’t need visual references to older items they’ve never used. This led to something called flat design, where computer desktops and smartphone home screens started to do away with skeuomorphism.
Skeuomorphs made a comeback, though, with smart watches. Many smart watches took on the appearance of an old fashioned watch, with a clock face. This was to encourage people who didn’t like digital watches to consider buying a smart watch.
While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn’t mean it’s only a modern phenomenon. In fact, the word was first used in 1899 by the archaeologist Henry Colley March, who realized that some ancient artefacts (人工制品) kept the appearance of older objects, even though there was no practical reason for them to do so. When ancient Greek builders moved from using wood to stone, they recreated some of the characteristics of wooden buildings. From ancient Greek architecture to 21st century technology, skeuomorphs have been a key feature of scientific progress. So, when you wonder about the objects of the future, take a look around. Chances are that they will look a lot like the objects of the past.
8. Which of the following is an example of skeuomorphs?
A. B. C. D.
9. How would people feel about skeuomorphs?
A. User-friendly. B. Safety-centered. C. Energy-saving. D. Cost-effective.
10. Why did some designers think skeuomorphs unnecessary?
A. Users became accustomed to technology. B. These products were expensive to design.
C. Young people rejected traditional designs. D. The existing standards had been updated.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The prediction about future objects. B. The key feature of scientific progress.
C. The design philosophies of skeuomorphism. D. The ever-lasting presence of skeuomorphs.
D
A wheeled robot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs, moving awkwardly. Powered by conventional electricity via plug or battery, these simple robotic creations would be unremarkable, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are controlled by a living entity (实体) : a king oyster mushroom.
By growing the mushroom’s mycelium (菌丝体) into the robot’s hardware, a team led by Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the environment by using electrical signals made by the mushroom and its sensitivity to light.
The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid robotics who seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or insects with artificial components to make partly living and partly engineered entities.
There’s still a long way to go before biohybrid robots go beyond the lab, but researchers hope one day robot jellyfish may explore oceans, sperm-powered robots may be able to deliver fertility (肥沃) treatments and cyborg cockroaches could search for survivors in the wake of an earthquake.
“Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use, understand, and control to help our artificial systems work better,” said Shepherd, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University.
The team began by growing king oyster mushrooms in the lab from a simple kit ordered online. The researchers chose this species of mushroom because it grows easily and quickly. They cultivated (培育) the mushroom’s mycelium, which can form networks that, according to the study, can sense, communicate and transport nutrients.
The team found it challenging to engineer a system that could detect and use the small electrical signals from the mycelia to command the robot. “You have to make sure that your electrode (电极) touches in the right position because the mycelia are very thin,” said lead author Anand Mishra. “Then you culture them, and when the mycelia start growing, they wrap around the electrode.”
12. What is special about the two robots in the first paragraph?
A. They can control living creatures. B. They can make various movements.
C. They are powered by king oyster mushrooms. D. They are partly mushroom and partly machine.
13. What does the author want to show by giving the examples in paragraph 4?
A. The future possibilities of biohybrid robots.
B. The seriousness of the environmental issues.
C. The limitations of biohybrid robots beyond the lab.
D. The advantages of biohybrid robots over conventional ones.
14. What did the team find difficult when engineering the robots?
A. Wrapping the electrode with the mycelia.
B. Arranging the electrode in the right order.
C. Developing a system to cultivate the mycelia.
D. Positioning the electrode accurately on the mycelia.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. When Nature Meets Technology B. How Technology Transforms Nature
C. King Oyster Mushrooms: the Magic of Nature D. Biohybrid Robotics: the Key to Social Development

Many adults are proud to share their fascinations with what others would label as kids’ toys. Mini Brands mystery packs or other blind boxes have become a phenomenon as collectibles for some adults. ____16____ For others, Legos are on their wishlist encouraged by the brand’s growing number of grown-up sets.
____17____ Seeking and sparking child-like joy may be part of the appeal, said behavioral therapist Maddy Ellberger. “When something reminds us of a positive memory, we are likely to engage with it because the association recalls those memories.”
____18____ Clothing brands are also cashing in on nostalgia (怀旧情怀) — from Crocs creating a Lizzie McGuire clog to Lululemon’s Disney collection making a full comeback that includes adults. Barbie isn’t just for kids clothes now either, thanks to the recent film and “Barbie-core” fashion trend.
In addition to the trendy appeal, all these revivals can also touch on a feeling of connection during a time of increased division. But whether that desire for connection is satisfied depends on if you can translate the excitement into real, in-person connection. ____19____ But having or wearing the same thing is not the actual steps of forming shared identity,” Ellberger said. “And I feel like that’s some of what gets lost, and it isn’t impossible.”
Ellberger has a great idea for this. “You are into a certain trend, like toys. There’s a good chance you’ll find others who are into the same trend. ____20____ If it was part of everyone’s secret Santa or white elephant — that’s a really cute way of connecting over this,” she said.
A. The craze goes beyond toys.
B. So, what’s with the fascination?
C. It’s a great way to form community.
D. Then give these toys to them as holiday gifts.
E. Social media fuels the trend by creating shared experiences.
F. Even stuffed animals are making their way into adults’ homes.
G. Childhood favorites have instead become relevant to adults again.

One of my teachers once asked my class what our favourite memory was. She was asking for the moment in which “you felt the best, you felt that you had the world in the palm of your hand. ” Some described grand awards; others described winning a tournament. But I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmate’s stares and snickering, because I knew there was more to the story.
My brother and I shared a typical brotherly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. Or, to be honest, he couldn’t stand me. I hero-worshipped him. My clothes mysteriously looked like his, and even my words tended to mimic those I heard from him. Many times, I even wanted to literally follow my brother, sobbing every time I was prevented from hanging around with him. Needless to say, I was an annoyance to him. Any sort of conversation we had usually degraded to fighting, and try as I might, my brother usually won.
After a while, I stopped trying to impress him and learned to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern—I avoided him, he ignored me, and deep inside, it hurt. Indifferent or hostile, he was only a brother in name. So that’s how it was between us. I believed we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth. And nothing more.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received it that Christmas, which was great, until I realized I had no idea how to ride it. My mom was too busy and had long since abandoned any attempt to teach me. I decided to teach myself to ride, a little bit each day, but in vain. On that fateful day, it was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture, and I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside.

C 9. A 10. A 11. D

根据第一段中“These are examples of skeuomorphs, which is when new things take on the appearance or sound of the object they’ve replaced. (这些都是拟物化设计的例子,也就是新事物呈现出被它们取代的物体的外观或声音)”可知,拟物化设计是指让新事物的外观或声音与被取代的旧事物相同。比较选项中的图标可知,C项的图标呈现的是过去常用的手电筒的外观,属于拟物化设计。故选C项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Psychologist James Gibson says one of the ways people understand the world is through affordances — objects whose shape tells you how to use them. When creating new digital technologies, inventors like Steve Jobs of Apple used skeuomorphs so people would know how to use their products. By showing people an image of something they already knew how to use, it made using a computer or smartphone easier. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“However, as people became more familiar with modern technology, some designers argued that skeuomorphs were no longer necessary. (然而,随着人们对现代科技的熟悉,一些设计师认为拟物化设计不再是必要的)”可知,一些设计师认为没有必要使用拟物化设计是因为用户已经习惯了科技。故选A项。
根据最后一段“While these are the ways skeuomorphs are used today, that doesn’t mean it’s only a modern phenomenon.

I guess that was what caused my brother to come outside. I turned my face away, fearing he would tease me. Unexpectedly, he gently picked my bike up and gestured me over, “Get on it.” His determined look smoothed away my doubts. As he gripped the back seat, I got on the bike, took a deep breath and started to pedal, holding tightly onto the handlebars. During the whole process, we didn’t talk much. He simply offered a few necessary instructions at times. But never once did he shout at me, nor did he let me fall. His patient teaching proved efficient and I gradually got the hang of riding.
An hour later, I was showing off my riding skill to my mom. She was amazed to see me riding steadily around the yard. While sharing my learning experience with her in excitement, I noticed my brother standing at a distance smiling at me. I cast him a grateful look and he nodded and then walked back into the house. From that day on, the sad pattern between us began to change. There were occasional conversations between us, filled with less embarrassment but increasing concern. I could feel a different kind of brotherly relationship slowly developing between us. I would always treasure that day as my favourite memory, the moment when I felt the best.
