Once upon a time, there lived a man and a woman who had seven sons. The couple wanted a daughter, and, eventually, they had a girl who they loved very much. One day, the father needed water for the child, so he sent the seven brothers to a well in the forest to get it. Once there, though, the boys began to fight, and the water jug (壶) fell into the well. The boys did not know what to do. They were afraid to go home.
Hours passed. “Where are those boys?” shouted the angry father. “They are probably playing a game and forgot about the water. I wish they were all turned into ravens (乌鸦)!” When he looked up, he saw seven black birds flying away. The father was shocked. “What have I done?” he thought. But it was too late. He could not take back his words.
In time, the girl grew up and discovered she had brothers. The story of their misfortune affected her greatly, and she was determined to find them. For years, she searched and did not stop. Finally, she found their home. To enter, she needed a special key made from a chicken bone, which she did not have. The girl thought for a moment, and then took a knife and cut off one of her fingers. With it, she opened the front door and went inside. On a table, there were seven plates and seven cups. She ate and drank a little from each of them. In the last cup, she accidentally dropped a ring that her parents had given her.
Eventually, the ravens returned for their meal. The girl hid behind a door and watched. When the seventh raven drank from his cup, something hit his mouth. The raven recognized it immediately—it was his parents’ ring. “I wish our sister were here,” he said, “and then we could be free.” Their sister quickly ran to them, and suddenly the ravens were human again. The brothers kissed their sister, and they all went home together happily.

The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, is remembered for many things he did during his rule. Between 221 and 210 BC, he started the construction of the Great Wall. He built a large network of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency (货币), and set of measurements. The emperor also ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.
Today, the soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are light brown, but they weren’t always this color. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. Before their discovery, the clay soldiers were protected by being underground. When they were unearthed, however, the air caused the coating under the paint to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.
New techniques are now starting to reveal the army’s true colors. Archaeologists (考古学家) have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a special liquid to help preserve the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier or other artifact (人工制品), archaeologists spray it with the liquid. They then cover it in plastic.
Archaeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around Xi’an’s terracotta warriors. It’s important not to disturb the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. “We are treating the earth as an artifact,” says archeologist Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. The next challenge, says Rong, is to find a way to apply the colors to the army again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full color.
28. Which sentence uses unearthed with the same meaning as the underlined word?
unearth ①发掘 (文物) ②揭露 (秘密、真相) ③翻出 (久藏的东西) ④使显露
A. Archaeologists unearthed ancient coins in the old town last year.
B. The report unearthed the truth behind the accident.
C. I unearthed my childhood toys from the old box.
D. The storm unearthed many old tree roots.
29. Why does the writer mention “the time it takes to boil an egg” in Paragraph 2?
A To tell us how quickly the paint disappeared.
B. To suggest that eggs were also found in the tomb.
C. To compare the color of eggs with the soldiers.
D. To show how the archaeologists worked efficiently.
30. Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree with?
A. The soldiers should be left the way they were found.
B. We should try to restore the army’s original colors.
C. It’s unnecessary to restore the army’s original colors.
D. Artists should be able to paint the soldiers any color they want.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?

Many teenagers close their books or give up easily when they meet difficulties again and again. They easily believe that their efforts are useless and finally stop challenging themselves. This common but harmful state (状态) of mind—giving up because of repeated failures—is called learned helplessness.
The idea was first proved by Seligman, a famous American psychologist (心理学家), in his dog experiment in the 1960s.
He put some dogs in a closed box with no way out. Then he gave them small electric shocks (电击) that the dogs could not avoid. Try as they might, the dogs could not run away or stop the pain.
Later, Seligman opened a clear door in the box—the dogs could easily escape if they wanted. But surprisingly, they just lay there and gave up trying at all.
The experiment showed that repeated failure could make living things lose the courage to try, whether animals or humans.
Such a state mainly comes from three kinds of wrong thinking.
First, people hold a strong belief that they can hardly change the results no matter how hard they work. Second, they only connect failure with their own weaknesses but pay little attention to outside conditions. such as the environment or unexpected accidents. Third, they only see their mistakes but completely ignore the progress they have made. For example, a runner feels upset about not winning the running race but fails to notice his running speed has improved.
▲ He developed another idea “learned optimism (乐观)”, which means optimism can be learned and trained as a useful life skill. To help people learn it easily, he designed the classic ABCDE method.
Adversity—difficult things that happen to us.
Belief—our first thoughts about the difficulties.
Consequence—the feelings or results caused by our beliefs.
Disputation—questioning and correcting our wrong ideas.
Energization—taking active new actions after changing our mind.
Learned helplessness is not a final state. By using the ABCDE method, setting small and clear goals, and praising our own progress, we can build optimism little by little. Failure is not a final judgment, but a chance for us to think and improve.
32. What’s the correct order of Seligman’s dog experiment?
①The dogs gave up trying even with an open door.
②The dogs got electric shocks they couldn’t avoid.
③The dogs were put in a closed box with no way out.
A. ③→②→① B. ②→③→① C. ③→①→② D. ②→①→③
33. Which of the following is the wrong thinking that causes learned helplessness?
A. Tom believes he can change his Maths exam results through his hard work.
B. Mary thinks failure is a good chance to find out her problems and make progress.
C. Jack realizes he made many spelling mistakes but his reading skills improved a lot.
D. Linda thinks her bad grades all come from her poor ability though the tests are hard.
34. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. As a result, nobody wants to face their mistakes.
B. Besides, Seligman did more experiments on animals.
C. However, Seligman’s later research brought people hope.
D. Unluckily, Seligman found no useful ways to help people.
35. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing the passage?
A. To tell teenagers a famous psychologist’s funny experiment.
B. To explain three kinds of wrong thinking among teenagers.
C. To introduce an unhealthy state and help teenagers fight against it.
D. To teach teenagers how to remember the ABCDE method quickly.

Nowadays, AI is developing fast and changing our life in many ways. Some people ask, “Why should we study English hard now? AI can translate it for us.” But the truth is that language is never just about words and sentences.
AI can help you translate a sentence correctly, but can it really explain the culture, history and people’s thinking behind it? Learning English is more than just mastering grammar rules and vocabulary. It’s a way to understand how people in other parts of the world think, feel and communicate with each other.
In the AI age, what we need are not just people who can use a language, but culture connectors. We need people who not only know English well, but also understand the education, politics, values and life of English-speaking countries. We should grow from simple language learners into global interpreters (译员) who can understand different ideas, emotions and cultures.
AI can give you the right words, but it can never give you real wisdom. It can’t help you make a deal, build trust with others, or understand the hidden meaning of words. These things can only be done by humans.
So, studying English as a major is still important. It’s not because the world is short of translators, but because we need more true bridge builders between different cultures. In a world where AI can give fast answers to almost everything, deep understanding between people is still priceless. That’s why an English major is more meaningful than ever in the AI era.

Have you ever bought a blind box from Pop Mart just for the excitement of opening it? Have you visited concerts or cat cafes to enjoy the happy moments? Have you ever paid for game skins or reed diffusers (香薰) to cheer yourself up? All these are called emotional consumption.
Nowadays, it is widely popular among the young generation. Heavy pressure from study and work makes them look for easy ways to relax. It greatly helps a large number of people make friends who share the same hobbies and get a sense of identity (认同). Besides, the ideas of “pleasing oneself” and making up for (弥补) their unmet childhood wishes also encourage the growth of emotional consumption to some degree.
In fact, emotional consumption plays a helpful role in people’s lives, offering real comfort and joy when people feel tired or lonely. A report shows that in 2025, people spent more than 2.7 trillion yuan on emotional consumption and this number is still growing rapidly. As a strong driver (驱动力) of cultural and creative industries, it’s still surprising that it has achieved such impressive (令人难忘的) results.
However, the hidden dangers behind it are worth noticing if people lose control. Impulsive (冲动的) buying may lead to a waste of money. Nearly one-fifth of young people pay over 2,000 yuan for it monthly. Besides, quite a few consumers would seek mental satisfaction through such spending rather than face real problems in study and life. What’s worse, some businessmen take advantage of young people’s emotions to set consumption traps (陷阱) for them.
To consume wisely, young people are expected to learn to tell the difference between their real needs and simple wants. They can make a spending plan and think twice before buying anything. It is a better choice for them to relax in healthier and cheaper ways, such as doing sports or talking with friends. In this way, they can take a proper attitude toward emotional consumption and make it a pleasant part of life.
Emotional consumption is popular among young people. It means people prefer to ____60____, mainly because they want to reduce stress and feel accepted. Not only can it bring people happiness, ____61____. However, the problems also exist. People who consume without control may ____62____ and even be cheated by some businessmen. As a result, young people should realize what they really need and choose healthier ways to relax so that ____63____.

C

29. Why does the writer mention “the time it takes to boil an egg” in Paragraph 2?
A. To tell us how quickly the paint disappeared.
