Tu Youyou, an 84-year-old Chinese woman, was the first Chinese female scientist who was awarded a Nobel Prize for her work on 7 December, 2015. Her discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素) has led to the development of new drugs which have saved the lives of millions.
Tu Youyou was born in Zhejiang, China, on 30 December, 1930. She studied medicine at Peking University Health Science Centre. After graduation, she became a member of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. Later, she studied Chinese medicine for two and a half years with experts in the field from whom she gained a deep knowledge about traditional practices.
In 1969, Tu Youyou was chosen to establish a team to find a cure for malaria — a disease that killed millions of people every year. Across the world, scientists had been trying to find a cure. They tested more than 240,000 chemicals with no success. However, Tu Youyou had an idea that Chinese herbs might hold the secret. She studied ancient Chinese medical literature and visited experts in traditional Chinese medicine. She researched hundreds of traditional recipes connected to anti-malarial cures. Then Tu Youyou and her team began using modern research methods to study these Chinese herbs one by one.
This was not an easy task because the team had limited resources. However, after hundreds of failed experiments, they eventually came across a promising chemical. Tu Youyou bravely volunteered to be the first human subject when they were ready to start testing and the rest of her team followed her. The test was a success. The medicine they discovered, artemisinin, has now become the world’s most effective drug for fighting malaria (疟疾).
Tu’s work bridged the Eastern and Western worlds, saving millions of lives. She was noted for her bravery and her ability to use old wisdom and new methods to achieve her goals. Today Tu Youyou continues to conduct research despite her age.

Imagine a world where you move around in front of a personal computer in your own sound space. You listen to your favorite songs, play loud computer games or watch a movie—all without other people hearing the sound. That is the possibility presented by “sound beaming,” a new technology from Noveto Systems, an Israeli company.
On Friday the company presented a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver. Noveto Systems gave The Associated Press (AP) a chance to test its Sound Beamer 1.0 before its debut. The AP’s Louise Dixon writes that listening to the device is like something from a science fiction movie. The sound seems so close it feels like it is inside your ears while also in front, above and behind them.
Noveto expects the device will have many uses. Office workers could listen to music or conference calls without others hearing. People could play a game, a movie or music without waking up others in the same room. Because the device does not use headphones, it is possible to hear other sounds in the room clearly.
The device uses a 3-D technology that finds and follows the ear position of the listener. It sends ultrasonic waves to create sound pockets by the user’s ears. Sound can be heard in stereo or 3-D. The 3-D method creates sound on all sides of the listener The demo version of the device included nature videos of birds on a lake, bees flying and a quiet waterway. By changing a setting, the sound can follow a listener around when they move their head. It also is possible to move out sound beam’s path and hear nothing at all.
While the idea of sound beaming is not new, Noveto was the first to launch the technology. Its chief executive officer Christophe Ramstein said a smaller version of the device will be ready for release to consumers next year.
8. What do we know about Sound Beamer?
A. It’s a device appearing in the science fiction movie.
B. Listeners got its sound through a receiver.
C. It can prevent other sound being heard.
D. The smaller one will be on market next year.
9. What does the underlined word “debut” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. New version. B. First appearance. C. Another failure. D. Some doubt.
10. What does the fourth paragraph tell us?
A. How the device works. B. How to use the device.
C. The device’s advantage. D. Why the device is invented.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The introduction of a new device — sound beamer. B. The usage of 3D technology.
C. The influence brought by sound beamer. D. 3D technology and listening experience.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive(互相排斥)career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现)among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth’s workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members’ research projects. “It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “We do a disservice(伤害)to ourselves to think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We’re all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.
12. What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in paragraph 1?
A. To display they were talented.
B. To confirm they were out of favor.
C. To encourage different career paths.
D. To show poetry and science can be combined.
13. What are Illingworth’s workshops aimed to do?
A. Promote a new science-poetry journal.
B. Inspire outsiders to pursue their careers in science.
C. Encourage science communication through poems.
D. Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.
14. What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication?
A. Conventional. B. Effective. C. Innovative. D. Complex.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Take on Poetry
B. Scientists and Poets Think Alike
C. Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World
D. Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue
D 13. C 14. A 15. A
根据文章第一段中“The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现)among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
根据文章第二段中“Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field. (通过研讨会和一本名为Consilience的新科学诗歌期刊,伊林沃思正在帮助科学家将他们的最新成果转化为诗歌,以吸引他们所在科学领域以外的人的欣赏。)”可知,伊林沃思的研讨会旨在鼓励通过诗歌进行科学交流。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中“That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. (Illingworth也赞同这一观点,他认为科学传播计划往往被公开讲座和不干涉的PowerPoint幻灯片所主导。)”可知,伊林沃思认为,科学交流倡议往往被公开讲座的幻灯片所主导,这是一种老套的方式。故选A。
故选A。

Household chores like cooking, cleaning, washing the dishes, and making the bed are never done; they just get repeated like a broken record. Boring! ___16___. But there are science-based reasons for changing your attitude towards chores. It turns out that doing chores is great for your health.
___17___. As researchers state in a report, doing undemanding tasks allows the mind to wander. Your mind gets a break, which allows you to consider old problems with new eyes. In fact, undemanding tasks stimulate (激发) more creative ideas than demanding tasks or just resting.
Chores are linked to a lower dementia (痴呆) risk. To discover what activities might be linked to a lower rate of dementia, researchers analyzed massive amounts of healthcare data from the UK Biobank. They found that those most engaged in household chores had a 21 percent lower risk of dementia compared to those least engaged in chores. ___18___.
Finishing your chores can increase motivation. BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything, states that the most important skill is recognizing and celebrating successes. Completing even a small task, like making your bed, can give you a sense of satisfaction. ___19___. Similarly, author Admiral William H. McRaven argues that if you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
Chores are good for children’s mental health. Children develop a sense of ownership when they have jobs to do around the house and it makes them feel like they are an important member of the household. ___20___. In my own case, I bond with my daughter by gossiping (闲聊) and singing while we do chores together.

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had fun climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us. It was May, yet we walked up a snow-covered hill. When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees, it did not dampen our spirits Not once did we say, “Let’s turn around.” This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one-kilometer like yet we were already walking a long distance. Our light-heartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it. As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced. I realized we were lost in a national park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me; in fact, it heightened my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell-phone signal in this isolated(偏僻的)area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road, my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My vision sharpened. I noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet with a single car on the road. Silently, I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.
Paragraph 1:
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance.

One possible version
Paragraph 1
My husband suddenly spotted a small building on a hill in the distance. In no time we found ourselves heading for it. We were filled with hope and excitement to find such a building in the middle of nowhere. We climbed up the hill at a swinging pace as if all the pains were gone. As we approached, a sign came into sight, which read: Administration Office. However, it was not open for business. The empty hall made us nervous all at once. We stood there hopelessly, wondering what to do next.
Paragraph 2:
Just then, a friendly woman appeared, saying, “Hello.” I could barely hold back my enthusiasm and blurted out, “Were lost!” She comforted us and opened a room for us to take a break. Seeing we were cold and hungry, she treated us with hot chocolate. After studying the map, we figured out that our car was parked over three kilometers away. She offered us a ride back to our car and we accepted gladly. I felt relieved to see our rental car again. What a blessing to have such an unforgettable experience

On Friday, the company presented a desktop device that sends sound directly to a listener without the need for headphones or a special receiver.

“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia.
C Encourage science communication through poems.
D. Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.
14. What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication?
A. Conventional. B. Effective. C. Innovative. D. Complex.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Take on Poetry
B. Scientists and Poets Think Alike
C. Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World
D. Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue
