Winter Solstice Celebrations From Around the World
The winter solstice (冬至), the longest night of the year, falls on December 21 or 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20 or 21 in the Southern. Since ancient times, people all over the world have celebrated this important astronomical occurrence in different ways. Here are some solstice traditions both new and old to help light your way to longer days.
Soyal
Soyal is the winter solstice celebration of the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona. Ceremonies and rituals include purification, dancing, and sometimes gift-giving. On the day, Hopi welcome the protective spirits from the mountains.
Saturnalia
The ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia is perhaps the most closely linked with the modern celebration of Christmas. This festival happened around the time of the winter solstice and celebrated the end of the planting season. There were games and feasts and gift-giving for several days.
Midwinter in Antarctica
Even Antarctica gets its share of solstice celebration, thanks to the researchers staying there over the long, dangerously cold season. While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying the most daylight hours, in the Southern Hemisphere they are celebrating Midwinter. Festivities include special meals, films, and sometimes even handmade gifts.
Dong Zhi
Dong Zhi, the “arrival of winter”, is an important festival in China. It is a time for family to get together and celebrate the year they have had. The holiday generally falls between the 21st and 23rd of December. It is thought to have started as an end-of-harvest festival. Special foods, such as Tang Yuan and Jiaozi, are enjoyed. Friends and family members occasionally express their blessings and care to each other through gifts.

C. Midwinter in Antarctica. D. Dong Zhi.
2. What do the festivals have in common?

Children are often exposed to diet culture from a young age and its negative impacts can be long-lasting, according to Virginia Sole-Smith, author of a new book titled Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture.
“Kids, at a very young age, start to become aware of body shaming,” Sole-Smith said. “The main factors of children’s future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids’ being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood.”
In Fat Talk, Sole-Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word “fat”. “We can understand ‘fat’ as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair...” Sole-Smith said. “If your child in a bigger body comes to you, and he says, ‘Am I fat?’ you should be honest with him and say, ‘You’re fat.’ And there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. We love your body just the way it is.”
Another suggestion from Sole-Smith is for parents to change conversations with and in front of children at home. “We can say I’m not going to feel ashamed of my body in front of my kids and I’m going to celebrate bodies in all shapes and sizes,” Sole-Smith recommended. Simmons, a parenting expert, added, “So if you have a child who’s in a bigger body, talk about their strengths,” Simmons continued. “Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals... these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.”
Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but Simmons said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture. But as children grow older, Simmons encourages parents to be honest with kids about their own struggles and not to pretend they know everything and that kids know nothing about diet culture.
4. What might contribute to children’s future eating disorder?
A. Body shape and peer pressure.
B. Body image and parenting style.
C. Body change and food preference.
D. Body shaming and dieting experience.
5. What can be learned from paragraph 3?
A. Parents should teach their kids honesty.
B. Kids should take pride in being overweight.
C. Parents should give “fat” a positive definition.
D. Kids should make peace with their body image.
6. What should kids focus on according to Simmons?
A. Their body functions. B. Their individual characters.
C. Their physical appearance. D. Their career achievements.
7. Which word has the same meaning as “shield” in the last paragraph?
A. Tutor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.
D 5. C 6. A 7. C
根据第二段中“The main factors of children’s future eating disorder (饮食失调) are kids’ being ashamed of their weight and their history of dieting in childhood.(儿童未来饮食失调的主要因素是孩子对自己的体重感到羞耻,以及他们童年时期的节食历史)”可知,身体羞辱和节食经历可能会导致孩子未来饮食失调。
根据第三段中“In Fat Talk, Sole-Smith argues that one way parents can fight back against this is to take a fresh look at the word “fat”. “We can understand ‘fat’ as just a neutral body descriptor, just like saying tall or short or brown hair, black hair...” Sole-Smith said.(在《肥胖对话》一书中,索尔-史密斯认为,父母反击的一种方式是重新审视“胖”这个词。“我们可以把‘胖’理解为一种中性的身体描述词,就像说高或矮,或棕色头发、黑色头发……”索尔-史密斯说)”可知,父母应该给“胖”一个积极的定义。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Helping our children concentrate on how our bodies work, how they allow us to achieve our goals... these are things we can remind our kids about every single day.(帮助我们的孩子关注我们的身体是如何工作的,它们如何让我们实现目标……这些是我们每天都可以提醒孩子的事情)”可知,根据西蒙斯的说法,孩子们应该关注他们的身体功能。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Often, diet conversations about size can be unavoidable for children, but Simmons said parents can act as a shield between children and some of the most harmful messages behind diet culture.(通常,关于身材的饮食对话对孩子来说是不可避免的,但西蒙斯说,父母可以在孩子和饮食文化背后一些最有害的信息之间起到shield作用)”可知,父母可以在孩子和饮食文化背后一些最有害的信息之间起到保护作用,由此可推测出shield意为“保护者”,与protector同义。故选C。

For this Chinese New Year’s Eve, Tiffany Chen is trying something unconventional and ordering in a meal for her family get-together. She used a food delivery service app and searched New Year’s Eve dinner. “I actually found quite a few results! This apparently is a real thing now,” Chen said. The ease of ordering takeaway food is one of many ways technology is changing how Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year, and this change has been embraced by all generations.
In Shenzhen North Railway Station a week before Chinese New Year, a father hurried to catch a train. Yan Jianlong is from Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. This year, instead of getting local food or other specialties as gifts, he wanted to buy something high-tech for his 10-year-old son. “I heard he likes these kinds of presents now,” Yan said. Chen Zhiyang, who runs a shop, said robotic toys such as dogs and drones (无人机) were the most popular of all his merchandise (商品). Beijing resident Wang Xiaoya said she would visit a friend in Brazil this year, and she could do so without feeling like she had neglected (忽视) her family since she would chat online to her mother and grandparents during the holidays. This technology is not the preserve of the young — Wang’s grandmother has learnt how to use smartphones. “It has really made it more convenient for families and friends to get closer,” Wang’s grandmother said.
There have been questions about whether technology has changed the atmosphere at Chinese New Year and whether it means people have become lazy. “I think what technology has changed is only a formality,” Chen said. “It does not matter how you celebrate the festival, whether you are eating in, eating out, or ordering — the most valuable thing is who you celebrate it with.”
8. What did Tiffany Chen do for this Chinese New Year’s Eve?
A. She ordered a takeout family meal.
B. She cooked a special dish for her parents.
C. She helped her parents prepare the family dinner.
D. She booked a table at her favorite restaurant online.
9. What did the goods sold in Chen Zhiyang’s shop show?
A. Local food is widely accepted.
B. Giving gifts is an important tradition.
C. Kids are excited about Chinese New Year.
D. High-tech gifts are getting popular among kids.
10. What is the attitude of Wang Xiaoya’s grandmother to smartphones?
A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Technology Is Changing Chinese New Year Celebrations
B. Experience Different Ways of Celebrating Chinese New Year
C. More New Technologies Are Needed in Chinese New Year Celebrations
D. New Technology Is Making Chinese New Year Famous Worldwide
A 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第一段中“For this Chinese New Year’s Eve, Tiffany Chen is trying something unconventional and ordering in a meal for her family get-together.(今年的除夕夜,蒂芙尼·陈尝试了一种非传统的方式,为家人团聚点了一份外卖)”可知,蒂芙尼·陈今年的除夕夜点了一份外卖家庭餐。故选A。
根据第二段中“Chen Zhiyang, who runs a shop, said robotic toys such as dogs and drones (无人机) were the most popular of all his merchandise (商品).(开店的陈志扬说,像狗和无人机这样的机器人玩具是他所有商品中最受欢迎的)”可知,陈志扬店里卖的商品表明高科技礼物在孩子们中越来越受欢迎。
根据第二段中“This technology is not the preserve of the young — Wang’s grandmother has learnt how to use smartphones. “It has really made it more convenient for families and friends to get closer,” Wang’s grandmother said.(这项技术并不是年轻人的专利——王的外婆已经学会了如何使用智能手机。王的外婆说:“这真的让家人和朋友更亲近了。”)”可知,王小雅的外婆对智能手机的态度是支持的。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“The ease of ordering takeaway food is one of many ways technology is changing how Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year, and this change has been embraced by all generations.(点外卖的便利性是科技改变中国人庆祝春节方式的众多方式之一,这一变化得到了各年龄层的认可)”可知,本文主要讲述了科技正在改变中国人庆祝春节的方式,因此选项A“科技正在改变中国人庆祝春节的方式”是本文合适的标题。故选A。
D
The other day, my sister and I were sitting in a restaurant, trying to have a conversation, but her children, four-year-old Willow and seven-year-old Luca, would not stop fighting. The arguments — over a fork, or who had more water in a glass — never stopped.
Then my sister reached into her handbag, produced two shiny iPads, and handed one to each child. Suddenly, the two were quiet. They sat playing games and watching videos, and we continued with our conversation.
After our meal, as my sister sniffed the iPads back into her bag, she said, “I don’t want to give them the iPads at the dinner table, but if they keep them occupied for an hour so we can eat in peace, I often just hand them over. I’m afraid it’s bad for them. I do worry that it makes them think it’s OK to use electronics at the dinner table in the future.”
Dr. Gary Small, director of the Longevity Centre at the University of California, Los Angeles says that the brain is highly sensitive to stimuli (刺激物), like iPads and smartphone screens, and if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills.
“Conversations with each other are the way children learn to have conversations with themselves, and learn how to be alone,” said Sherry Turkle, a professor of science, technology and society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy (亲密) without risk. However, they need to be able to gather themselves and know who they are. So someday they can form a relationship with another person without a panic of being alone. “If you don’t teach your children to be alone, they’ll only know how to be lonely,” she said.
12. What did Willow and Luca fight about?
A. iPads. B. Little things. C. Delicious food. D. Interesting things.
13. According to Dr. Small, what should parents do?
A. Provide their children with various technologies.
B. Teach their children communication skills.
C. Talk to their children at the dinner table.
D. Limit their children’s screen time.
14. What is Sherry Turkle worried about?
A. Children are afraid of taking risks.
B. Children try to escape from the real world.
C. Children can’t live without electronic devices.
D. Children can’t deal with companionless situations.
15. What is the overall attitude in the article towards using electronic devices to calm down children?
A. Approving B. Critical C. Neutral D. Indifferent
B 13. D 14. D 15. B
根据文章第一段中“The arguments — over a fork, or who had more water in a glass — never stopped. (争论——关于叉子的问题,或者谁的杯子里有更多的水——从未停止过。)”可知,Willow和 Luca为一些小事争吵。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段中“if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills. (如果人们在一种技术上花太多时间,而与父母等人在餐桌上交流的时间较少,可能会阻碍某些沟通技巧的发展。)”可知,Dr. Small认为,如果人们在一种技术上花太多时间,可能会阻碍某些沟通技巧的发展,故可推知他认为父母应该限制孩子看屏幕的时间。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中“She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy (亲密) without risk. (她担心,如果孩子们没有学会真正的互动,而互动往往是有缺陷的,他们将会认识到一个完美、闪亮的屏幕给他们一种没有风险的虚假亲密感的世界。)”可知,Sherry Turkle担心孩子们没有学会真正的互动,且认识的世界是存在虚假亲密感的,故可推知Sherry Turkle担心孩子们无法应付没有同伴的情况。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段中“if people spend too much time on one technology, and less time interacting with people like parents at the dinner table, that could prevent the development of certain communication skills. (如果人们在一种技术上花太多时间,而与父母等人在餐桌上交流的时间较少,可能会阻碍某些沟通技巧的发展。)”以及文章最后一段中“She fears that children who do not learn real interactions, which often have imperfections, will come to know a world where perfect, shiny screens give them a false sense of intimacy (亲密) without risk. (她担心,如果孩子们没有学会真正的互动,而互动往往是有缺陷的,他们将会认识到一个完美、闪亮的屏幕给他们一种没有风险的虚假亲密感的世界。)”可知,文章通过两位专家的观点,表达了对用电子设备安抚孩子的现象的担忧,故可推知全文的总体态度是批判性的。故选B项。

【16题详解】
上文“Teenage years are filled with important life choices, such as choosing courses, deciding on extracurricular activities and planning for college. (青少年时期充满了重要的人生选择,比如选课、决定课外活动和规划大学)”提到青少年时期有很多重要选择,B选项“However, many teenagers feel stressed and uncertain when making these choices. (然而,许多青少年在做这些选择时感到压力和不确定)”与上文形成转折,精准地指出了青少年做选择时存在的问题,即很多青少年面对这些选择时往往缺乏经验和判断力,容易感到迷茫和有压力,进而引出下文的策略。故选B。
【17题详解】
上文“Before making any choice, ask yourself what you truly enjoy, what you are good at, and what your long-term goals are. (在做任何选择之前,问问自己你真正喜欢什么,你擅长什么,以及你的长期目标是什么)”强调要了解自己的喜好、优势和目标,因为这些因素是我们在做决定时最需要考虑的核心内容。C选项“Your interests and abilities are the core of your decision-making. 【18题详解】
上文“Second, gather reliable information. (第二,收集可靠的信息)”明确指出做决定的一个重要步骤是收集可靠信息。F选项“Don’t rely on rumors or untrustworthy online content for decision-making. (不要依赖谣言或不可信的在线内容来做决定)”从反面说明不能依赖不可靠信息,与上文话题紧密相关,符合语境。故选F。

上文“Every decision has advantages and disadvantages, so list them out to see which option aligns better with your goals. (每个决定都有优点和缺点,所以把它们列出来,看看哪个选项更符合你的目标)”提到要列出每个决定的优缺点,这是因为只有全面考虑了利弊,我们才能做出更理性、更合适的决定,而不是盲目冲动地做出选择。A选项“Don’t rush into a decision without careful consideration. 【20题详解】
上文“Once you make a decision, commit to it and face the results, whether good or bad. (一旦你做出了决定,就要坚持下去,无论结果是好是坏都要面对)”强调要对自己的决定负责,而盲目跟随别人做决定,往往没有经过自己的思考和判断,当结果不如意时,就容易产生后悔的情绪。E选项“Blindly following others will only lead to regret in the long run. (盲目跟随别人从长远来看只会导致后悔)”从反面说明不能盲目跟随别人,要自己做决定并负责,符合语境。故选E。

A. Tutor. B. Supporter. C. Protector. D. Connector.

The other day my sister and I were sitting in a restaurant, trying to have a conversation, but her children, four-year-old Willow and seven-year-old Luca, would not stop fighting.
D Children can’t deal with companionless situations.
15. What is the overall attitude in the article towards using electronic devices to calm down children?
A. Approving B. Critical C. Neutral D. Indifferent
