This is an even bigger school and it is very different. In kindergarten, you could play most of the time. In primary school there was still a lot of running and shouting. But this school is not for little children. In this school, we expect our students to be young adults. Here, we expect our students to be quiet and serious in class. We don’t want you to run or shout in this school. Or else you will be punished. You are still children, of course, but you are not little children. We will not treat you like them, so please try not to behave like little children. Our teachers will help you with your study in every way possible, but they will not hold your hand like the teachers in your primary school. You are young adults now, and we want you to take some responsibility for your own learning. We will give you every opportunity to learn, but if you don’t want to learn, there is little we can do except encouraging you. Please remember these words and act accordingly. If you do, I am sure you will have a great time here.

Socolinsky, 50, had never planned to open a gym. But after years of professional dancing, her back was suffering endless pains. She remembers one morning, as she was brushing her teeth, her whole back seized up and she fell to the floor.
Strength training, Socolinsky says, gave her freedom from pain and restored her mobility. She had imagined she might someday open a dance studio, but after a weekend meeting on coaching strength training, she was attracted to it. So her dream changed. “I know immediately that I want to open a gym,” says Socolinsky. “I want to work with adults, and I want to do what it did for me. I want to help them and make them better.”
Five×3 Training, a strength and weightlifting gym, was what she did. When Socolinsky first opened her gym, she didn’t aim at a particular age group. But over time, that changed. “By 2016, it was quite clear that I was really enjoying my older clients, and I was seeing a bigger push for older people to train,” she said.
72-year-old Jack LeDonne has been training here for more than 3 years. As a retired doctor, LeDonne says he knew what the literature said about the benefits of weight training, but it wasn’t a part of his routine until his son introduced him to Socolinsky. “And then, a strange thing happens,” LeDonne says. “You get into it, you know, and it becomes part of your discipline.”
Becca Jordre, a professor of physical therapy at the University of South Dakota, says, “If the signal is: I’m going to sit in my chair and I’m not going to walk very far, our body will learn it — we’ll lose our muscles gradually and experience a decline in bone density (密度). That can leave people unprepared for basic movements, like jumping or pushing something heavy. But with regular exercise, the body can adapt.”
“When they start a program like this,” Socolinsky says, “they stand taller, walk with more purposes, and feel confident in the body... because they know what they’re capable of doing in the gym.”
24. What changed Socolinsky’s idea of opening a dance studio?
A. The advice from her personal coach.
B. Her desire to work with young people.
C. The plan to expand her social circle.
D. Her wish to pass on the benefits from gym.
25. How did the strength training affect Jack LeDonne?
A. It changed his habits in daily life.
B. It removed his pain from an operation.
C. It improved his relationship with his son.
D. It made him realize the benefits of weight training.
26. What does Becca Jordre want to express through her words?
A. Our body will adjust to the way we use it.
B. Pushing heavy things is bad for the elderly.
C. Simple exercise is enough to strengthen our muscles.
D. Bone density is the most important health indicator.
27. Which words can best describe Socolinsky?
A. Motivated and humorous.
B. Modest and honest.
C. Determined and responsible.
D. Energetic and patient.
D 25. A 26. A 27. C

Microforests, small thick patches of native trees often no bigger than a tennis court, are emerging as powerful allies (盟友) in the fight against climate change. Pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, this planting method uses native species planted extremely close together, allowing them to grow up to ten times faster than traditional forests.
The core strength of microforests lies in their carbon storage ability. Their thick growth accelerates photosynthesis (光合作用) , enabling young microforests to absorb CO2 far more efficiently than scattered urban trees. A 2022 Dutch study found that a 250-square-meter microforest can store around 127. 5 kilograms of carbon annually, comparable to mature traditional woodlands. Beyond carbon capture, they create cool microclimates by lowering urban temperatures by up to 10℃, reduce flood risks via enhanced water absorption, and filter air pollutants, making cities healthier places to live.
Biodiversity is another key benefit. Microforests typically include 30 or more native tree and bush species, forming mini-ecosystems that attract insects, birds, and small mammals — filling gaps in broken urban habitats. In Scotland, “wee forests” near schools let kids engage with nature, bridging the growing human-nature divide.
However, microforests are not a silver bullet. Experts warn they cannot replace large-scale ancient forests, which support far more complex ecosystems Success depends on proper site selection, using local species, and community maintenance. Still, as a low-cost, community-driven solution, they let people take direct action against climate change — proving that even small green spaces can make a big difference.
28. What makes microforests grow much faster than traditional forests?
A. Thick planting of native species B. Using chemical fertilizers
C. Large planting areas D. Imported fast-growing trees
29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The carbon storage process is questionably supported
B. Microforests have multiple environmental benefits
C. Microforests are less efficient than urban trees in carbon absorption
D. A Dutch study has no reference value for microforest research
30. What can we infer about microforests from the passage?
A. They can replace ancient forests completely B. They are too expensive for community projects
C. They have no effect on urban temperature D. They help connect people with nature
31. What is the author’s attitude towards microforests?
A. Doubtful B. Neutral C. Positive D. Critical
A 29. B 30. D 31. C

根据第一段“Pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, this planting method uses native species planted extremely close together, allowing them to grow up to ten times faster than traditional forests. (这种种植方法由日本植物学家宫脇昭率先开创,它将本地物种种植得极为紧密,使得这些植物的生长速度比传统森林快达十倍。)”可知,本地物种的密集种植使微森林比传统森林生长得快得多。故选A项。
根据第二段“The core strength of microforests lies in their carbon storage ability. (微森林的核心优势在于其碳储存能力。)”“Beyond carbon capture, they create cool microclimates by lowering urban temperatures by up to 10℃, reduce flood risks via enhanced water absorption, and filter air pollutants, making cities healthier places to live. (除了碳捕获,它们通过将城市温度降低多达10℃来创造凉爽的微气候,通过增强吸水性降低洪水风险,并过滤空气污染物,使城市成为更健康的居住场所。)”可知,该段主要讲述了微森林在碳储存、调节温度、降低洪水风险和过滤空气污染物等多方面对环境有益,即微森林有多种环境效益。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In Scotland, “wee forests” near schools let kids engage with nature, bridging the growing human-nature divide. (在苏格兰,学校附近的“微森林”让孩子们接触自然,弥合了日益扩大的人与自然的鸿沟。)”可推断,微森林有助于将人和自然联系起来。故选D项。

In central London, groups of young professionals regularly meet at a meditation (冥想) studio called 7Breaths. Their main activity is not typical yoga or meditation, but a specific practice called “breathwork”. In these classes, an instructor guides participants to focus on and control their breathing. The goal is simple: to feel less stressed.
The idea that controlling your breath can calm your mind is not new. For example ancient Hindu texts written over 2,000 years ago described “pranayama”, a yoga practice focused on breath control. But does it really work for everyone? To answer this, scientists use randomised-controlled trials (RCTs).
A 2023 analysis of 12 such studies, involving 785 people, examined the effect of slow breathing on stress. The results showed that participants who did breathwork felt more stress reduction than those in the control groups. The positive effect was small but clear, and similar to what is sometimes seen with online treatment.
However, there are some reasons to be careful. In several of these studies, the control groups were people on a waiting list for mental health treatment. Waiting for help can sometimes make people feel worse, which could make the breathwork group seem more effective by comparison.
A more recent study from Stanford University tested different daily five-minute breathing exercises for one month. While all participants felt better at first, only those doing structured breathwork continued to feel their mood improve over time. One method, “cyclic sighing” (two short breathing-ins followed by a long breathing out), showed the best results.
How can just breathing change your mood? One theory is that it serves as distraction from negative thoughts, which is the key mechanism. Focusing closely on breathing leaves little room for other thoughts.
Science also shows that slow, controlled breathing can increase “heart-rate variability”—a measure of the variation in time between heartbeats. Low levels are often linked to conditions like depression. There is even animal research suggesting that the brain circuits (脑回路) for slow breathing and stress regulation are connected.
While the scientific evidence is still developing, the practice has very few risks and may soon become a recognized tool for improving mental well-being.
32. Why do people attend breathwork classes at 7Breaths?
A. To learn ancient yoga techniques. B. To achieve mental relaxation.
C. To practice special meditation. D. To study stress-related disorders.
33. What does paragraph 4 focus on about the research?
A. The function of the control group.
B. The limitation of previous studies.
C. The effect of breath control practice.
D. The link between breathing and health.
34. What does the underlined word “distraction” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. A complete removal of worry. B. A way to strengthen memory.
C. Something that takes attention away. D. Something that causes deep thinking.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Science Behind Breathwork for Stress
B. 7Breaths: A London Studio’s Success Story
C. Ancient Wisdom: Breath Control Practices
D. A Comparison of Modern Breathing Methods
B 33. B 34. C 35. A

根据第一段“Their main activity is not typical yoga or meditation, but a specific practice called “breathwork”. In these classes, an instructor guides participants to focus on and control their breathing. The goal is simple: to feel less stressed.(他们的主要活动并非传统的瑜伽或冥想,而是一种名为“呼吸法”的特定练习。在这些课程中,一位指导老师引导参与者专注并控制自己的呼吸。目标很简单:减轻压力)”可知,人们参加7Breaths的呼吸练习课程是为了实现精神放松。故选B项。
33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“However, there are some reasons to be careful. In several of these studies, the control groups were people on a waiting list for mental health treatment. Waiting for help can sometimes make people feel worse, which could make the breathwork group seem more effective by comparison.(然而,有一些需要谨慎对待的理由。在其中几项研究中,对照组是等待心理健康治疗的人。等待帮助有时会让人感觉更糟,相比之下,这可能会使呼吸练习组看起来更有效)”可知,该段主要聚焦于先前研究的局限性。故选B项。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“How can just breathing change your mood? One theory is that it serves as distraction from negative thoughts, which is the key mechanism. Focusing closely on breathing leaves little room for other thoughts.(仅仅呼吸怎么能改变你的情绪呢?
The Science Behind Breathwork for Stress (呼吸练习缓解压力背后的科学)”最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench (板凳) in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar (乞丐)?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet (钱包). He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, because he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. His hands trembled as he held the wallet, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. “Fahad was so cruel to me. He deserves to learn a lesson,” he thought. But then, his conscience pricked him. “What if this were my wallet? How would I feel?” he mused. After a long, hard battle within himself, he took a deep breath and walked towards Fahad. “Fahad, I found your wallet,” he said, his voice a bit shaky but determined.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving back?” Asad looked straight into his eyes and replied, “Because it’s the right thing to do. I believe in honesty, even when it’s tough.” Fahad was stunned. He had never expected this. A wave of shame washed over him. “I’m really sorry for how I treated you,” he said sincerely. From that moment on, Fahad made a conscious effort to change. He started being kind to everyone, and he and Asad became inseparable friends, all thanks to Asad’s unwavering honesty.
示范二
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. He stared at the wallet, a mix of anger and temptation in his heart. “This could teach him a lesson about being arrogant,” he muttered. But as he thought about it more, he remembered his parents’ teachings about honesty. “I can’t stoop to his level,” he decided. With a resolute look, he walked up to Fahad. “Here’s your wallet,” he said firmly.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving back?” Asad answered, “Honesty is more important than revenge. I know you might not respect me, but I respect myself enough to do the right thing.” Fahad was taken aback. For the first time, he saw the error of his ways. “I was wrong. I’m sorry,” he said sheepishly. From then on, Fahad’s attitude transformed completely. He and Asad became good friends, and Asad’s honesty had not only won him a friend but also a new-found respect in the class.

C They have no effect on urban temperature D. They help connect people with nature
31. What is the author’s attitude towards microforests?
A. Doubtful B. Neutral C. Positive D. Critical
D
In central London, groups of young professionals regularly meet at a meditation (冥想) studio called 7Breaths. Their main activity is not typical yoga or meditation, but a specific practice called “breathwork”. In these classes, an instructor guides participants to focus on and control their breathing. The goal is simple: to feel less stressed.
The idea that controlling your breath can calm your mind is not new. For example, ancient Hindu texts written over 2,000 years ago described “pranayama”, a yoga practice focused on breath control.

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. One day, he wanted to buy something to eat, only to find that he forgot his money at home.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar (乞丐)?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation.
