①Nature has many ways to solve problems. We humans learn a lot from animals and plants in nature. There is a science about how we copy great ideas from animals and plants to create helpful products. It is called biomimetics (仿生学).
②Some animals such as this sugar glider have wing-like structures to help them fly from tree to tree. When they jump, they spread out their arms and legs to help them fly down easily. Wing-suits, a kind of clothes, can let people experience flying. The idea of these clothes comes from the sugar glider.
③Some animals have structures used for self-protection. An armadillo has a hard cover that can protect it from other dangerous animals. When an armadillo feels that it is in danger, it will change into a ball. Once the dangerous animal goes away, it comes out of the ball. The armadillo has taught people to create a backpack with a hard surface. The surface of the backpack protects things inside from being broken.
④Plants have helped people come up with amazing inventions, too. Perhaps the best-known example is Velcro (尼龙搭扣). It includes two pieces of cloth. They stick to each other when they are pressed together. Velcro is used on everything from handbags to clothes. The idea of Velcro is from burrs (带芒刺的小果实) of a plant. They have special structures to allow themselves to stick to people’s clothing or hair. They are taken to other places in this way.
⑤From these examples, we can see biomimetics is widely used in our daily life. What other problems will nature help us solve in the future? Let’s wait and see!

Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help.
“Well,” he said. “You do some research first and then come back to me with a design.”
A week later, Sally brought her design to Dad. She named her go-cart “Blue Lightning”. Dad looked over her work, thinking. “Well, that’s interesting,” he said. “Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you’ve designed.”
Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-cart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. After Sally did that, she drove back to Dad. “Well,” she said. “Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive.”
“Oh, do you?” he said. “Please share.”
“When I drove fast, there was a lot of pushback,” she said, “I think it’s because of the lightning shape.”
“Very good!” Dad said.
“So, why didn’t you tell me about that problem in the first place?” Sally asked.
Dad laughed. “Where’s the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.”
Sally said, “I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun!”
Dad smiled. “Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way.”
Finally came the race. Sally wasn’t worried about whether she would win—in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.

①Birds are building their nests (巢) with rubbish, said a new study. The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
②A group of European scientists looked into about 35, 000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth except Antarctica (南极洲).
③Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds “like” putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals, so they can keep insects away and protect the baby birds. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
④However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The harmful chemicals in cigarettes, hurt the baby birds. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a study.
⑤What’s worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also catch birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If the baby birds eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Our friends in the air are feeling the bad effects of humans polluting the environment.
13. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. Human rubbish has been part of a bird’s nest.
B. There are hardly any birds’ nests in Antarctica.
C. Birds are losing the ability to make nests alone.
D. Scientists have invented more man-made things.
14. Which of the following things can make birds’ nests stronger?
A. Cigarette butts. B. Fishing nets. C. Plastic bags. D. Paper cards.
15. What’s the purpose of writing the text?
A. To tell people to help make nests for birds.
B. To tell people to make more studies on birds.
C. To tell people not to throw rubbish anywhere.
D. To tell people how to save our friends in the air.
16. How is the text organized?

The beautiful handiwork of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉绣) in Tongren, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the major styles of embroidery in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery first appeared in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It has been used to send information by several ethnic groups (民族) in the southwestern region.
Yang Li, an inheritor (传承人) of this skill, has brought together the traditional embroidery of the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in the leaves, presenting traditional beauty with modern skill.
Leaf-vein embroidery artwork has artistic value because of its special production process. The key steps include picking and drying the leaves, then designing and embroidering the pattern. Leaves from rare plants in the thick forests of the Fanjing Mountain area in Tongren provide the best material. After the leaves naturally soften in about 20 days, they are fumigated (熏蒸). Then patterns, with ideas from ancient stories and nature, are drawn on the processed veins.
However, due to the difficult process and low yield (产出) of high-quality products, passing down the traditional skill faces challenges.
“In my generation, I must do it better and pass on this craft,” Yang said.
In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou embroidery intangible cultural heritage industry base and has since used social media to show leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her apprentice (学徒) Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure. As a young person influenced by my teacher Yang Li, I am determined (下定决心的) to inherit this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to inherit it,” Yang Xinyu said.

D. Scientists have invented more man-made things.
14. Which of the following things can make birds’ nests stronger?

Dear Tom,
I’m so glad to hear that you’re coming to China! Before your trip, let me introduce you to some Chinese customs.
In China, when meeting someone for the first time, you are supposed to say “hello” and shake hands with a smile. It’s a good way to show warmth and friendliness. During meals, pay attention to table manners, especially how you handle chopsticks. Avoid sticking them into your food or pointing at others with them. After the meal, it is polite to say how much you like the food to express your thanks. As for presents, you’d better use both hands to accept them and avoid opening them immediately. Bringing some flowers as a gift for your hosts is always appreciated.
