Teaching and learning difficult points:
1) Listening comprehension of the conversation about habits;
2) Learning about expressions on asking for and giving, accepting and refusing advice and then talking about bad habits and give some advice.
Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Review and leading in
Activity 1 Review and leading in
1. Briefly revise the use of infinitives used as the subject and check the answers to the grammar exercises in the reference book.
2. Lead in the teaching topic—giving advice on changing bad habits, and then introduce the teaching and learning objectives of this period.
Step 2 Listening
Activity 2 Pre-listening
Look at the pictures. Discuss what choices or preferences make it easier for people to develop these bad habits and share your ideas, using the following questions as guidance.
What’s the person doing?
What’s her/his problem?
What’s the possible cause of her/his bad habit?
What advice would you suggest to her/him?
Suggested answers:
Picture1: Choosing to stay up too late playing computer games can mean that one does not sleep enough.
Picture 2: Preferring to play games or use social media on phones can make it easier for people to use them too much.
Picture 3: Choosing to eat when one feels bored or depressed can lead to overeating.
Picture 4: Choosing to buy many things one wants and not things one needs can lead to overspending.
Picture 5: Staying up too late and not sleeping enough can lead one to drink too much coffee the next day.
Activity 3 While-listening
1. Tell the students that they’re going to listen to a conversation and that the main speaker is a doctor who just gave a talk to a class and now he is going to answer some questions from the students. What’s the conversation probably about? (Healthy lifestyle, healthy habits, mental health…)
2. Go through the listening tasks (completing the table and answering the questions) and the listen to the conversation for the first time to check the answers to the table-filling exercise.

3. Listen to the conversation again and then check the answers.
1) Why is a good night’s sleep important for the first student?
A good night’s sleep is important because it will help with their schoolwork.
2) Why does the second student never exercise?
Because he always picks up his phone instead of exercising.
3) What is the expert’s bad habit? Do you think it is a health problem?
The expert drinks too much coffee. It can be a health problem because too much is bad for the heart and can cause headaches and other problems.
4) What would you advise the expert to do to control this habit?
I would suggest that the expert change the habit slowly by drinking smaller cups of weaker coffee, and then try to change coffee for another drink. Later he should do more exercise as this can stimulate the body like coffee does but has more positive benefits.
4. Reconstruct the text by summarizing the main content of the listening material.
5. Learn about how to distinguish facts from opinions and then decide whether these statements from the conversation are facts (F) or opinions (O).
Strategies to distinguish facts from opinions: It is important to know whether what the speakers say is a fact or an opinion. A fact is what really is true, while an opinion is what you believe, often using phrases like “I think/believe”, “in my opinion”, “to me” and so on. An opinion is a subjective statement and a fact is objective.
Decide whether these statements from the conversation are facts (F) or opinions (O).
1) O It was a really interesting talk.
2) F It often takes me half an hour to fall asleep at night.
3) O You look tired. Not enough sleep, right?
4) O It is affecting my schoolwork.
5) F I failed in all my school subjects this semester.
6) F I usually pick up my phone.
7) O I think the phone is the problem.
8) O A five-minute walk is so easy that it is hard to say no!
Step 3 Speaking up
Activity 4 Learning about the expressions
1. Learn about the use of expressions for asking for and giving advice.
My problem is…
I’m having problems with…
I cannot stop…
Please give me some advice about…
I think/believe you should…
So, why don’t you…?
Well, have you thought about…?
In my opinion, …
2. Learn about the use of expressions for accepting and refusing advice.
Sure, I’ll do that.
That’s a good idea!
That’s just what I need!
Lovely!
Great!
Terrific (极好的;了不起的) idea!
Sorry, but I…
I’d like/love to…, but…
That’s a good idea, but…
Thank you for telling me, but…
It’s a nice thought, but…
I cannot…. because…
Activity 5 Practising having a conversation
1. Work in groups to choose a bad habit from the box below and have a conversation with your partner about it, using the expressions above.
sleeping too much game addict overeating TV addict
Internet addict overspending staying up too late
Sample conversation.
A: I think I’m watching too much TV.
B: Yeah. Me too.
C: In my opinion, you should spend your time on something more active instead. For example, try to get more exercise.
B: OK, sure, I’ll try that.
A: That’s a nice thought, but I don’t really enjoy exercising.
C: Hmm. How about reading more books instead?
A: All right, maybe I can try that.
2. Choose a few groups to present their conversations.
Step 4 Evaluation and summary
Activity 6 Self-evaluation
Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects.
1. How is your listening comprehension? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor)
2. How is your performance of the conversation (presentation)? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor)
