I often take walks in the middle of my writing day. One afternoon, I returned home, looked at my front door, and felt how normal and safe it seemed. Then a question occurred to me: What if I came back and found the door wide open? That simple idea became the seed for my novel Gone Girl.
Around that time, I watched many true-crime shows, in which the husband was often the “bad guy”. But in my story, the husband would not be completely innocent, nor completely evil.
No story comes to a writer in full form. Gone Girl changed hugely when I was writing it. At first, I wrote only from Nick’s point of view. Amy’s voice was missing. To understand her, I wrote short exercises. One of them later became the now-famous “cool girl” passage. I also imagined many possible endings — should Amy be recognized by strangers, or even be killed? In the end, I felt Nick and Amy were locked in a special, troubling bond. They harmed each other, yet depended on each other.
My years as a journalist helped me accept that a first draft is always rough. The writing process was no mystery to me; I knew no sudden inspiration would come to fix it. I had to solve the problems myself. Many people give up because their first draft feels terrible. But all first drafts are like that.
While writing Gone Girl, I had many doubts. The story had no clear hero, and the biggest surprise came in the middle, not the end. I liked the idea, and luckily my editors did too, but none of us knew whether readers would enjoy it. To our relief, booksellers supported it early on. The novel entered the bestseller list at number two and soon reached number one.
I do not expect to repeat my success. I’m going to write other great books, but there’s never going to be another Gone Girl. That was just pure lightning in a bottle and I was lucky to be there for it.
24. What first inspired the author to write Gone Girl?
A. A dream about danger. B. A true-crime TV show.
C. A thought about her door. D. Her husband’s strange behavior.
25. What does the author think about first drafts?
A. They can be perfect.
B. They usually show final style.
C. They are usually far from perfect.
D. They should be brief to the point.
26. What can we infer about the novel’s early reception?
A. Readers disliked its lack of a clear hero.
B. It was rejected by booksellers immediately.
C. It faced strong criticism from true-crime fans.
D. Editors and booksellers showed early support.
27. What does the underlined part “lightning in a bottle” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A long-time effort. B. A rare lucky event.
C. A common success. D. A well-planned result.
C
Everyone has a natural body smell, and most of the time it is completely normal. While many people try to hide their natural smell with deodorant (除臭剂) or perfume, you usually do not smell bad unless you are sweating heavily. Still, if you suddenly notice an unpleasant smell, it may be related to the food you eat.
To begin with, some vegetables can influence the way your body smells. For example, onions, garlic, leeks, and scallions are full of flavor but also rich in sulfur (硫). As the body digests them, sulfur compounds enter the blood and move through the pores, the breath, and even urine (尿液), which can create a strong smell. Still, these vegetables are very nutritious, so brushing your teeth and using deodorant afterward is often enough.
Certain vegetables may change the smell of your urine. Asparagus is a good example. When the body breaks down a sulfur compound in it, the urine of some people develops a special smell. This does not happen to everyone and is completely harmless.
Cruciferous vegetables — such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts — can also contribute. Eating large amounts of them may lead to body odor or gas. However, cooking them and increasing your intake slowly can help reduce these effects.
Spices can also play a part. Strong spices like cumin, cayenne, and horseradish raise your body temperature and make you sweat more. As a result, your body smell may become stronger. Using deodorant and washing after sweating are simple ways to manage this.
Besides these foods, red meat has been linked to a less pleasant body smell, although the exact reason remains unclear. Alcohol can have a similar effect, as it is partly released through the breath, pores, and urine during digestion.
If you want to reduce body smell naturally, washing with antibacterial soap, keeping your underarm skin clean, and choosing a suitable deodorant can make a big difference. If the smell seems unusual or lasts too long, it is best to seek advice from a doctor.
28. Which foods affect body smell through sulfur compounds?
A. Onions and garlic. B. Cumin and cayenne.
C. Broccoli and cauliflower. D. Asparagus and horseradish.
29. What is suggested to reduce the effects of eating cruciferous vegetables?
A. Stop eating them for a while. B. Drink more water after eating.
C. Eat them raw in small amounts. D. Cook them and gradually eat more.
30. Why might red meat affect body smell?
A. It raises body temperature fast.
B. It contains strong-smelling spices.
C. Scientists aren’t sure of the cause.
D. It increases sweat production greatly.
31. What is the best title for this text?
A. How to Hide Natural Body Smell
B. Foods That Influence Body Smell
C. Natural Changes in Human Body Smell
D. Everyday Tips for Managing Body Smell

Recently, strange photos showed several dogs with bright blue fur living near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The unusual sight surprised the animal workers who look after the dogs in the area. The animals are believed to be descendants of pets that were left behind after the Chernobyl disaster nearly 40 years ago, in what was then the Soviet Union.
The blue dogs were seen wandering inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone this month. The group Dogs of Chernobyl, which works with the non-profit Clean Futures Fund, reported finding three dogs whose fur had suddenly turned blue. In a post on social media, the group said they were catching dogs for a sterilization program when they discovered the strange animals. “We are not sure why this happened,” the group wrote.
Local people said the dogs had normal fur only a week earlier. Workers are now trying to catch the blue dogs to learn the cause of the color change. They believe the dogs might have touched or rolled in some kind of chemical substance. Apart from their blue fur, the dogs appeared active and healthy.
Dogs of Chernobyl was founded in 2017 and provides food and medical care for about 700 dogs living in the 47-square-kilometre exclusion zone. These animals are the descendants of pets that were left behind in 1986, when people were forced to evacuate after a serious accident at the nuclear plant.
On April 26, 1986, a test at one of the plant’s reactors went wrong because of several mistakes. A huge explosion destroyed the reactor’s roof and sent radioactive materials into the air. The Soviet government quickly evacuated around 30,000 people from the nearby town, but winds carried the radiation across large parts of Europe, reaching as far as Italy and France.
The exact number of deaths remains unclear. Dozens of people suffered from severe radiation sickness soon after the accident, and some later died. Scientists at the time also warned of possible long-term health problems, including cancer, for those who had been exposed.
32. When were the blue dogs first noticed?
A This month. B. In early April.
C. Nearly 40 years ago. D. During a test in 1986.
33. What can be reasonably inferred from the dogs’ fur color change?
A. It probably resulted from recent chemical contact.
B. It is a common seasonal change for dogs in the area.
C. The dogs are seriously sick from radiation exposure.
D. The dogs have been recently fed on some special food.
34. What is the main goal of Dogs of Chernobyl?
A. Feeding and treating dogs.
B. Reuniting dogs with old owners.
C. Training dogs for security work.
D. Preventing dogs from spreading radiation.
35. What’s the chief purpose of the last two paragraphs?
A. To explain why dogs turned blue.
B. To introduce Dogs of Chernobyl group.
C. To provide some background information.
D. To discuss long-term health effects of radiation.

Caring for an aging parent can be overwhelming, especially when their needs seem endless. Jen learned this when she began helping her mother with new health problems. She felt guilty every time she wanted a break. ___36___ As care coach Deanna explains, only when you take better care of yourself can you also take better care of others. Here are several practical steps that can help.
Start by thinking clearly about what “boundaries” mean for you. ___37___ For Jen, the biggest problem was having to drive long distances every week for her mother’s doctor appointments. She solved this by calling in instead of going in person. It saved hours of travel time and greatly reduced her stress.
Once you know your limits, communicate them calmly and consistently. ___38___ Jen’s mom wasn’t happy she stopped coming in person, but Jen reminded her that she could still ask questions and take notes by phone.
It’s also important to accept both your own feelings — and the feelings of your loved ones. ___39___ Caregivers are human. It is normal to feel tired or upset, and protecting your own energy allows you to provide better care in the long run. Loved ones may want more help, but sometimes the answer has to be “no.”
Above all, do not give in to guilt. Boundaries are not about leaving someone alone — they help protect your energy so you can be truly helpful when needed. ___40___ Many people face the same problem and ask the same questions every day.
A. And remember, you are not alone.
B. Actually, setting boundaries isn’t selfish.
C. Identify what tasks create the most stress.
D. Change may upset your loved one at first.

When I was chosen by my headteacher to present our class project at the annual school event on behalf of my class, I felt both honored and anxious. Speaking in front of such a large audience had always been my biggest fear. Although the project, which focused on reducing plastic waste on campus, meant a lot to all of us, I was still worried that my nervousness would ruin everything.
During the first practice session, I struggled to get through the speech. My voice shook, and I mispronounced several words. Worse still, I forgot some key points, which left me feeling both frustrated and embarrassed. Seeing my struggle, my best friend Lily volunteered to help. Every afternoon, she stayed with me after school, patiently listening to my rehearsals and giving suggestions. “Take it slow. You’re doing better each time,” she would say, encouraging me with her calm smile. Slowly, I began to feel more confident.
A week before the event, our headteacher organized a full rehearsal in the auditorium. Standing on the huge stage made my stomach flip, and I felt as if the bright lights were burning my face. Halfway through the speech, I completely lost track of my lines and froze in panic. My heart was pounding, and I thought I would never continue. Just then, I noticed my classmates in the front row, smiling and mouthing, “You can do it!” Their warm support helped me regain focus, and I managed to finish the rehearsal, even if it wasn’t perfect.
The night before the event, I lay in bed, filled with worries about everything that might go wrong. I imagined forgetting my lines, stumbling over words, or even tripping on the stage. The next morning, just before I stepped onto the stage, Lily quietly slipped a small note into my hand. It read simply, “We believe in you.” Her words made my heart race, but in a good way. I realized that I wasn’t alone — I had the support of my friends and classmates, and that gave me courage.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I stepped onto the stage, a wave of nervousness washed over me.

【原文】M: Pedal Power is a small charity based mainly in the UK. At Pedal Power, they collect second-hand bikes in the UK and send them to some of the poorest regions in the world. When they distribute bikes overseas, they don’t give them away for free. In order to continue operating, they need to have a constant supply of bikes which they send out every six months. In August 2000, they simply ran out of money. Fortunately, in October 2001 they won an Enterprise Award which helped them enormously.
Dan Pearman is the founder of Pedal Power. He got the idea of exporting bicycles to developing countries while he was in Ecuador. Dan Pearman went there in 1993 and lived in a rural area. His neighbor had the only bicycle in the village, while everyone else walked everywhere. His neighbor’s business was very successful. For years Dan Pearman couldn’t understand why. Then he realized having a bike meant his neighbor could reach customers easily. That made his business far more successful. Other local carpenters could only accept jobs nearby and never do as many jobs as his neighbor though they were skilled. When he returned to the UK in 1998, he started planning Pedal Power.

【答案】24. C 25. C 26. D 27. B

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“One afternoon, I returned home, looked at my front door, and felt how normal and safe it seemed. Then a question occurred to me: What if I came back and found the door wide open? That simple idea became the seed for my novel Gone Girl.(一天下午,我回到家,看着前门,觉得它看起来是多么正常和安全。然后我想到一个问题:如果我回来发现门大开着怎么办?这个简单的想法成为了我小说《消失的爱人》的种子。)”可知,最初激发作者写《消失的爱人》的是关于她家前门的一个想法,故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“My years as a journalist helped me accept that a first draft is always rough.(我作为记者的经历帮助我接受了初稿总是粗糙的这一事实)”可知,作者认为初稿通常远非完美,故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“I liked the idea, luckily my editors did too, but none of us knew whether readers would enjoy it. To our relief, booksellers supported it early on.(我喜欢这个想法,幸运的是,我的编辑们也喜欢这个想法,但我们都不知道读者是否会喜欢它。让我们欣慰的是,书商很早就支持它)”可知,编辑和书商在早期就对这部小说表示支持,故选D项。
【27题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“I do not expect to repeat my success. I’m going to write other great books, but there’s never going to be another Gone Girl. That was just pure lightning in a bottle and I was lucky to be there for it.(我不期望重复我的成功。我会写其他很棒的书,但不会再有另一本《消失的爱人》。那只是lightning in a bottle,我很幸运能参与其中。)”可知,作者认为《消失的爱人》的成功很难复制,是一种罕见的幸运事件,所以“lightning in a bottle”意思是“a rare lucky event(罕见的幸运事件)”,故选B项。
C
Everyone has a natural body smell and most of the time it is completely normal.
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. C 31. B

A. This month.

【56题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:首批五个国家公园于2021年正式设立,占地23万平方公里,保护了全国近30%的重点野生物种。此处为非谓语动词作定语,establish与其逻辑主语The first five national parks为被动关系,所以用过去分词established作后置定语。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As I stepped onto the stage, a wave of nervousness washed over me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I finished, the auditorium erupted with applause.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As I stepped onto the stage, a wave of nervousness washed over me. Reminding myself of Lily’s note and my classmates’ support, I took a deep breath and began speaking about our project — how we organized campus clean-ups, encouraged students to use reusable bottles, and reduced plastic waste. As I spoke, I noticed the audience leaning forward, listening carefully. The teachers nodded, some smiling, and even younger students seemed inspired. With each sentence, my confidence grew, and the fear that had seemed so overwhelming began to melt away.
When I finished, the auditorium erupted with applause. I looked at my classmates and Lily, and we all cheered together. Later, several students came up to me, saying they felt inspired by my speech and wanted to join our project. That moment taught me an important lesson: courage isn’t about never being afraid — it’s about taking action in spite of fear. From then on, I promised myself to face challenges boldly, knowing that support, determination, and a positive attitude could make even the impossible possible.
