It took two years of training and effort, but in February, 12-year-old Mia DaPonte achieved the extraordinary feat (壮举) of becoming a Master Scuba Diver, making her the youngest female in the US to ever reach this advanced level.
Diving is exciting yet dangerous, which is why organisations like PADI offer training courses to ensure underwater safety. Most divers only complete the basic Open Water Diver training, but Mia’s ambitions soared (急升) higher. Inspired by her mother, who became an Open Water Diver in high school, Mia embarked on (开始从事) her diving journey at age 10, the minimum age requirement.
Mia’s determination shone through as she earned her Open Water Diver certificate despite the challenging conditions of Rhode Island’s cold oceans. Mia formed a tight bond with her diving teachers, who were impressed with her energy and drive. “She sets her mind to something and she gets it done,” said Seamus Hastings, one of her instructors.
Over the next two years, Mia kept working at it. PADI courses involve diving practice, but they often include more normal class work, too, including studying and tests. Mia took several other courses, where she learned different skills, including first aid, how to find her way underwater, and how to identify fish. Mia finished 78 dives — far exceeding the 50 required for Master Scuba Diver status. Her mother, serving as her diving partner, accompanied her on this journey.
After travelling to Mexico for her first night dive, she quickly completed the necessary training for her Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver courses. The Rescue Diver course proved particularly challenging, demanding Mia to demonstrate her ability to rescue an injured diver after completing three severe dives in one day, including a deep dive to 58 feet.
Mia says she feels proud to have become a Master Scuba Diver. But she doesn’t plan to stop there. She’s interested in getting more training as a diver. In the future, she hopes to become a marine biologist. She’s particularly interested in tagging and tracking sharks!
4. Why did Mia DaPonte start her diving journey at the age of 10?
A. She wanted to set a new world record.
B. Her mother’s experience as a young diver influenced her.
C. Diving was part of her school’s curriculum.
D. She had always been crazy about marine life.
5. What does Seamus Hastings think of Mia DaPonte?
A. Sincere. B. Curious. C. Determined. D. Influential.
6. What can be inferred about Mia DaPonte from her experience with the PADI courses?
A. She found normal classroom work challenging.
B. She considered PADI courses unsuitable for her.
C. She preferred diving alone to diving with others.
D. She showed exceptional passion and commitment.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mia DaPonte’s Journey to Becoming a Master Scuba Diver
B. Different Levels of PADI Certification and Their Requirements
C. Various Challenges and Dangers Associated With Scuba Diving
D. Motivations Behind Mia’s Decision to Become a Marine Biologist
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

Every year, Arctic terns migrate (迁徙) from the Arctic to the Antarctic- a round trip of about 80,000 kilometers. New research finds that these far-flying birds use just a few select routes for their travels.
“The Arctic tern is well-known to people as a record holder. It holds the world record for the longest migration of any animal, and therefore interacts with a variety of ecosystems along the way,” lead author Joanna Wong says.
“They are an indicator species that can tell us so much about the different ecosystems that they travel through,” Wong continues.“ If they don’t make it to their destination in one year, then you know there might be an environmental problem somewhere along their route. ”
Globally, Arctic terns are reducing. Their crossing such a long distance has made it hard for researchers to see where the problem is. “These birds are difficult to study because they are either living in polar environments, or on the go,” Wong says.
So in order to track them, Wong and her colleagues attached light-level geolocators to the legs of 53 Arctic terns. These geolocators are actually small computers that record surrounding light intensities (强度). “ The length of daylight can tell us the latitude (纬度),while the time of solar noon can tell us the longitude. So we are able to judge positions of the birds,” Wong says.
Researchers compared the routes taken by the birds they followed and the migration timing to other Arctic terns that had previously been tracked. They determined terns in different areas all end up taking similar routes.
Some other seabirds also use the same paths, which suggests that the routes aren’t specific just to the Arctic terns and that protecting them may be beneficial to other species.
8. What are Arctic terns famous for according to the text?
A. Their long-distance migration.
B. Their influence on other species.
C. Their contribution to different ecosystems.
D. Their ability to survive in polar climates.
9. What does Joanna Wong say about Arctic terns?
A. They prefer to travel individually.
B. They may cause environmental problems.
C. They change their final destinations
D. They help us learn about ecosystems along their route
10. Why is it difficult for researchers to study Arctic terns?
A. They can’t find Arctic terns’ habitats.
B. They can hardly get access to Arctic terns.
C. They know very little about Arctic terns’ migration routes.
D. They live in different areas all over the world.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A novel. B. A guidebook. C. A scientific journal. D. A health magazine.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C

“A moth (飞蛾) to a flame” is often used to indicate an inescapable attraction, yet it is a strange example of animal behavior that continues to confuse people today. Scientists have raised a number of theories over the years to explain why. One holds that insects flying at night are following their nature to fly towards the brightest spot in their field of vision, which they mistake for the sky. Another suggests that insects are trying to warm themselves with the heat produced by the light. The most popular theory, though, is that insects are confusing lights with the moon or other celestial bodies (天体) that they normally use to navigate.
To find out the real reason, a team carried out a first set of experiments in an insect flight area. The researchers used eight high-speed infrared (红外线的) cameras equipped with motion capture technologies to track 30 insects from three moth and two dragonfly species. They also flew lab-raised insects from six different insect orders that were too small for motion-capture technology, including fruit flies and honeybees, to verify that insects across species exhibited similar responses to artificial light. Working with co-author Pablo Allen of the Council on International Educational Exchange in Monteverde, Costa Rica, the researchers put heavy cameras, lights and tripods in two field sites to gather behavioral data from insects in the wild.
The team was able to confirm that insects were not beelining to the light but rather circling it as they tilted (倾斜) in an attempt to turn their backs towards it. This behavior, known as a” dorsal light response”, typically helps insects maintain a steady flight path aligned with the horizon. Artificial light that arrives from a point source causes them to fly in unpredictable patterns as they try to turn their backs to what they are mistaking for the sky. Now research might have finally solved the mystery mentioned at the beginning: artificial light confuses insects’ ability to turn themselves to the horizon, confusing their sense of what is up and down and causing them to fly in circles.
12. Which theory about “a moth to a flame” is most widely accepted?
A. They follow their nature to fly toward light.
B. They are blind to artificial light.
C. They mistake artificial light for celestial bodies.
D. They are attracted by the warmth of artificial light.
13. What’s the author’s purpose in using the figures in Paragraph 2?
A. To show the comprehensiveness of the study.
B. To introduce the purpose of the study.
C. To estimate the cost of the research.
D. To stress the challenge the researchers faced.
14. What does the underlined word “beelining” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Flying slowly. B. Staying close. C. Reacting quickly. D. Heading straight.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Role of Light in Insect navigation Is
B. The Flying Patterns of Insects
C. The Heat-Seeking Behavior of Moths
D. Why Insects Are Attracted to Artificial Light
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了科学家通过一系列实验,探究并解开了“飞蛾扑火”这一现象的奥秘,解释了昆虫被人造光吸引并绕光飞行的真正原因。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“ The most popular theory, though, is that insects are confusing lights with the moon or other celestial bodies (天体) that they normally use to navigate.(不过,最受欢迎的理论是,昆虫会将灯光与它们通常用来导航的月亮或其他天体混淆)”可知,关于“飞蛾扑火”最被广泛接受的理论是昆虫把人造光误认为是天体。故选C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“To find out the real reason, a team carried out a first set of experiments in an insect flight area. 【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“The team was able to confirm that insects were not beelining to the light but rather circling it as they tilted (倾斜) in an attempt to turn their backs towards it.(研究小组能够证实,昆虫并没有beelining光,而是在倾斜时绕着光转,试图背对光)”可推断,not...but rather...表示转折含义,beelining与circling it(绕着飞)含义相对,具有“径直前往、直奔”之意。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Now research might have finally solved the mystery mentioned at the beginning: artificial light confuses insects’ ability to turn themselves to the horizon, confusing their sense of what is up and down and causing them to fly in circles.(如今,这项研究或许终于解开了开篇提及的谜团:人造光会干扰昆虫调整自身朝向地平线的能力,扰乱它们对上下方位的感知,进而导致其绕圈飞行)”以及文章内容可知,这项研究解答了全文的核心问题:昆虫为何会被人造光吸引并绕光飞行,所以“为什么昆虫会被人造光吸引”适合作为文章标题。故选D。

A Few Tips for Self-Acceptance
We all want it… to accept and love ourselves. But at times it seems too difficult and too far out of reach. ___16___ Here’s a handful of ways that will set you in the right direction.
●___17___ Do not follow the people who make you feel not-good-enough. Why do you follow them? Are you hoping that eventually you will feel empowered because your life is better than theirs? Know that your life is your own;you are the only you in this world.
●Forgive yourself for mistakes that you have made. We are often ashamed of our shortcomings, our mistakes and our failures. ___18___ You will make mistakes, time and time again. Rather than getting caught up in how you could have done better, why not offer yourself a compassionate (有同情心) response? "That didn’t go as planned. But, I tried my best."

●Now that you’ve listed your strengths, list your imperfections. Turn the page in your journal. Put into words why you feel unworthy, why you don’t feel good enough. Now, read these words back to yourself. ___20___ Turn to a page in your journal to your list of strengths and achievements. See how awesome you are?
A. Feeling upset again?
B. Where do you start?

His mom asked about his low grades in the recent exam. Stephen didn’t care too much about his carelessness and did not reply to her well. She scolded (责备) him again in the evening for being so careless. He quarreled with his mother. The quarrel ended up so badly that Stephen left his home.
He walked for more than hours. He smelled a nice flavor from a shop and was attracted by the sweet smell. He couldn’t resist the smell of that nice flavor and he felt very hungry.
It was a small noodles shop and he stopped by the shop. Suddenly he realized there was not even a single penny in his pocket. Tired and hungry, he stood there for a minute but decided to leave. The shop owner saw him and asked him to have some food.
Stephen said he had no money to pay for the food. The shop owner smiled, saying, “It’s OK. I won’t ask you any money.”

She cooked the delicious food for him. She played games with him. He also remembered that when he failed in the exam, she comforted him with all her heart and kept him company over the night. She was there for him whenever he needed her.
Stephen realized his mistake and thanked the shop owner: He rushed home in a hurry. He saw his mother standing at the door with tears in her eyes. Seeing his coming, his mother stepped forward, saying, “You must be hungry! I have cooked the meal you like best. Come and have it now.” He hugged his mother tightly, streaming with tears and said. “I am terribly sorry, Mom. I am wrong and I will never quarrel with you again. I love you.”

A She wanted to set a new world record.
C
D
